This channel is about DIY, forging of knives, and custom metal work. I also fabricate tools and machines to make that possible.

scott's barn how to take 5 ton electric log splitter and make forging press
great video but man very time you raised your welding hood I was looking for a bird lol.
Geez, I just took the switch out of the box, extended the wires and mounted it onto the lever arm. Took me 25 minutes. I can't use a foot switch because of stroke/balance issues. Have you worked out "kiss blocks" yet?
Your dies have a lot of vertical movement and the machine is fairly slow. The speed is not that big of a deal, but the movement needs to be eliminated. A hydraulic press is the best tool for efficiency imo. I bought mine and was doing days worth of hand hammering work in an hour or two. If you are still forging check out Coal Iron Works. Their 12 ton press is a game changer. Forge On!
Orthogonal Wind Sailing Look it up online and see how to make a wind sail that will make your chimes ring in the mildest of winds. Your chime can be "Tuned", trimmed to a proper length to coincide with the length of the sound wave within, its all online. untuned has a weak short ring, where as tuned is louder with a much longer reverberation. My chimes are up 25 feet up in a pecan tree and man do they sing. Tuned to a single chord from Jimmy Hendrix- "Foxy Lady" Under tones and over tones were not considered when choosing the cord... because that sh is way over my head.
For anyone who wants to know. Before removing the bottom of the canisters, you have to release the pressure within them. If you dont have the valve to more-safely remove the pressure, then use your AR-15 or deer rifle. I shoot mine sideways through the very bottom on the canister, with my .270 Winchester let it do the whirly dance, and then can chuck it in the lathe
Nice going copy you
I've got one of these in the garage. Got set to the side because of home improvements. But I picked up some 1/2" round stock to weld along the existing rails. They flex a lot. I want to stop that so the plates stay parallel to each other.
Very good move things closer and make your space smaller as in travel time
Another guy who welds without gloves even though he’s got a pair two feet away. Do people have a death wish, or is this some misplaced masculinity? Other than the health implications, it’s a nice table.
Could this be made in a vertical configuration?
not sure i would think it could be possible
Hi thanks what Dia is the pipe for the press?
3 inch 3/16 wall
Thanks For Sharing. Would you be willing to make an depth video on your lever/switch. Ive looked at many switchs and I like this one the best. Keep making vids your doing great. 👍👍👍
thanks for watching might work on that video for you
Best one I've seen too!
love it! will definitely build one! thanks Scott!
Damn 👍 good job!
Thinking about one of these for the same purpose. How is it holding up and working out for you? That flex is begging for the longer section to be welded to the body could also see some triangles welded to the two rods doing the pulling helping with the moving head flexing. Maybe even a set off rollers on a underside crosspiece. Should also be possible to make a collar that clamps onto the actual ram shaft, preventing the springs from fully returning, save a lot of time taking up the slack in the stroke each heat. Looks good, amazing how much faster that is than hammering it out for a little harbor freight log splitter.
thanks watching and the input great ideas have made several pieces of of pattern welded steel and it is holding up well great point about the flex but doesn"t seem to be a problem or make much difference but long term it may good luck with yours when you make it i would go for it it is a game changer make kiss blocks they are a big help
Maybe some rounded steel dies would put more pressure in one area, I've got a 5-ton electric log splitter thinking about the same👍✌
yes it dose makes a big difference i made a set thanks for watching
Would like to see it squish some hot steel
if you watch video 2 you can see that and i made video making pattern welded steel for knife
Is 5 tons enough?
for what i do 5 tons is plenty if you was doing a monster billet it may be pushing your luck
Awesome work. I know this is probably a bit out of left field, but would you be willing to build another one of those and sell it to me, and if so, for how much? I'm in Southwestern Virginia and would be willing to come pick it up... I'd build it myself, but I don't have a welder anymore and would probably sink more cost into setting up to do the mod than you'd charge for it. If you want, I'll buy all the materials up front, so that you don't have to worry about getting stiffed or covering costs for the project. I don't know what else to add to convey necessary info, but I'm a veteran (Army) and I want to make Damascus, but my body can't take the abuse of doing it all by hand, plus doing it all by hand wastes too much material, and power hammers and presses WAY are out of my budget. Or if you want to upgrade yourself to something else, I'd buy that one... or if you know of anyone with a tire hammer or anything for sale, I'd be interested in that... basically anything that reduces the impact and standing for me, lol. I look forward to hearing from you... reply here and I'll give you all my contact info if you want to do it. Thank you for your time and the great content.
sorry i would love to help but cant would be a liability issue
I think it would be quicker with hammer and anvil. 🤔🤔
if thats the way you like to do it if that works for you thats great thanks for watching
Trust me this is alot quicker then a hammer and a anvil. Its really almost impossible with a hammer and anvil . Unless you been doing it forever.
You obviously havent tried it
@@claudemaggard7162 i have tried it and it is the only way to go as far as Im concerned but everyone has there way they like to do it watch my other videos i did a 135 layer pattern welded steel knife thanks for watching
@@scottsbarn9432 but did you start with iron ore?
pretty awesome man
thanks for watching
Nice one! I did a video a little while back on how to squeeze a little more power out of this kind of press. They're a good unit when built right!
thanks Im very happy with how it works thanks for watching
Great follow up video to the first one you did of the beginning of the log splitter press build, thanks for taking the time to upload it
Thanks 👍 glade you liked it
I hope my press works as good
I'm currently building one exactly like yours well at least the log splitter is the same lol
thanks for watching Im happy with how mine works good luck
I have a short posted that shows how far I've got
Looks good , I did the same thing with the same brand of log splitter , but i made it to where is can still function as intended
thanks i also think it turned out well thanks for watching
