I have been a long time RC and Tamiya fan. I started my love for RC when I was a little kid when I bought my first kit which was a Tamiya Hornet. I later purchased a Bruiser in 1985 and from that moment on I could not get enough of R/C.
I have always enjoyed tearing apart and rebuilding vintage Tamiya's. From time to time I would take pictures of the process. The end result never did all the hard work justice. Recently I decided that a better idea would be for me to time lapse the rebuild and document the process on a blog site. www.VintageRcGarage.com was born so that I could start recording the restorations that I was undertaking both for my own documentation purposes and also for sharing the process with people that also enjoy the R/C hobby.

Nice!
I wish I could find a brand new the fox buggey would love to build it and own it
If you want a very similar build you can probably find a Novafox rerelease to build.
What did you clean the outside of the body to make it shine so well?
The body didn’t have any big scratches so just a scrub with a clean cloth. You can also use a plastic polish if you want to take it further.
No offense dude, but you seriously need a life. This is a toy car, not a Rolex. Most normal people would look for differences between old and new manufacturing - ie are they using stronger plastics, changing plastic parts to metal, changing the gearing, etc etc. You’re looking shit that no one cares about. The f-ing do-not-throw symbol on the new chassis? Seriously.
Great work on this build. I've looked for a Vanning to restore, but they are pricey these days. Well out of my league back in the day too.
I definitely wanted one when I was a kid. It’s a completely different build than Tamiya.
You sure do know your stuff, I had the Fox and the Hot Shot in the mid 80's. So now I'm going to find a video on the original Hot Shot. MEMORIES!!!!!
I haven’t restored a Hotshot yet but have one sitting in the closet. I’ll get to it someday.
So where is the re-build video?
Still in production. The chassis is all rebuilt but I messed up the body shell and haven’t been able to find a replacement.
Beautifully presented and quite fascinating. Thank you 😎👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Was only able to get the Nova Fox, The FOX was originally going to be my first RC kit but got the TAMIYA HOTSHOT. Thanks for sharing.
The Hornet was my first. Bruiser was the second.
Mad congrats, I also wanted the VANNING , but got the Tamiya HOTSHOT instead my local hobby shop had a package combo then, kit and radio. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it!
maybe it's camera distortion, but your toe & camber look seriously off in front and back. nice otherwise.
Thanks, I’ll take a look.
I have an original Holiday Buggy with period Acoms electronics. This model and the Sand Rover used a plastic bathtub chassis, so totally different to the SRB chassis.
I have a used Holiday Buggy but not the Sand Rover. I have not yet restored anything with a Holiday chassis.
@@VintageRcGarage I have been trying to restore my Holiday Buggy but at the moment that has been restricted to painting the body and cleaning up the chassis. I don't really want to change too many parts as it is currently almost 100% original. I have been searching for new wheels and tyres though which are very hard to find nowadays.
Yeh tires are usually difficult to find. Good luck with the restore!
Great comparison, only just found your channel, shame that you appear to have stopped uploading, I will go through your others though! Thanks for your vids.
I promise I’m not done. Just been tough to get back to the projects. I am in the middle of a Frog and Blackfoot restore and have stalled. I have kits to do XR311, Blackfoot, and Hornet comparisons.
Where the hell did you get that.
I got it a long time ago from a collector I know. Not many more around.
R u TRYING to break it!? Hard packed dirt. Not even a good spot to run.. Terrible
Παίζει χαλιά.
35years ago, it was not easy to ajust this mech. Speed Controller as a child.
All the vintage Tamiya speed controllers were difficult
I had a pencil case with a picture of this model in 1982. Nice restoration.
I had one on my folders
My only real problem (with the OEM Makita version of this) is that the clutch is electronic. They give torque settings in the manual for each of the clutches' positions but it, like almost all e-clutches, is not consistent. At least not enough to strip or damage things (a point you made in terms of just too much power). I'm used to lugging around a 10 lb impact wrench at work, so this feels like a feather all day working on the various machines I run if they need service. Frankly, I would want one just for the bragging rights. Tamiya has always been nuts.
Thanks for the details about the clutch. I tend to only use hand tightening for building so I can feel the tension. Tamiya tends to make parts with varying tension for a standard screw. The suspension arms seem to be the softest. I need to experiment more with the pistol grip setup since it changes the balance point.
Had one back in 84, and have a rerelease now in 23…👍
I hope you are having fun with it!
Not yet, I just got it but I will!😀
The Black foot was the first monster truck released in october 1986. love the clod buster i have a original with chevy badged body. ...great video
I am restoring a Blackfoot right now. The Clod was a better monster truck.
Honestly this thing should just be put on a shelf as a collectors piece . Tamyia stuff is normally valuable because of name brand. Lol it was priced like 600$ on there web site
Looks like Makita makes Tamiya’s. There is an identical one that sells for under $200 under Makita. The Tamiya is just a smidge over priced.
This was in all the late 80's magazines, what great memories seeing it again within a video. Looks like a great restore project and the final product looks Perfect! Nice Paint work!
I had many of those magazine cutouts. Glad you enjoyed it.
Still looking for a Vanning myself, beautiful restore -- enjoy it!
It was definitely a completely different type of build compared to a Tamiya.
@@VintageRcGarage I found me a Land Jump (1st Gen) ... I'll start there and get that Vanning soon enough! Where did you get the driver shell? I'll need one of those.
Vintage Tamiya packages are so cool when you open them 😊
There is just something about popping the top off.
Great video and restoration! 👍🏼🤩😊
Thank you! It was a fun restore.
What product do you recommend for the clear finish? Thank you
I always use Tamiya TS-13 for clear coats but if you aren’t using Tamiya paints under it I would just stick to the clear coat brand that matches the base. If can mix some brands but if you want to try it you should first test well on something less important.
Hello, I have the first version of the kart 10 NR 4939. NIB for sale.
Looks like an interesting kit. I don’t collect NIB Kyosho but I am sure there are many people that would be interested.
@@VintageRcGarage is allredy sold.
@@VintageRcGarage I still have a very good Kyosho Land Jump for sale. I'm going to put it in the bay tonight as an aukion.
I hope mine is where i left it . Poor thing needs restored as well and a rod for the engine . The only time i hesrd mine run is when it started and reved and snapped the connecting rod.. . Someday sometimes never comes .. i have no clue what the cash value of one of these might be . Maybe i will let it go someday ..
I hope you get a chance to restore it! They will collect money in any condition but it would be way more fun watching it run.
Thx a lot for your in depth explanation… I just bought a Vintage lunch box and you helped me a lot to understand what I have to care for restoring it 👍👍
Glad it was useful!
very very nice
Glad you liked it!
Great video! I had the Hornet as a kid & always liked the Frog & today I finally bought one! I bought the Re-release Frog XB for a good price. Also my original comment keeps being removed. What the heck YT? It has nothing wrong in it. Go AI... As of today, a vintage Frog (factory sealed) is being sold online for $2200 btw...
Enjoy your Frog! Just because its for sale doesn't mean that's what its worth :) You never know, someone might buy it but Not anywhere close to what I think its worth.
@@VintageRcGarage Thx so much as my XB should be delivered by early July. I agree, $2200 for a sealed vintage Frog is a bit steep. Btw, a NIB vintage Porsche 934 is available for $12,500. 🤯 I've NEVER seen this in the blister pack and new so I took screenshots of the pics as this is extremely rare. It's the 58001 green Porsche 934.
@@N_Fortune The 58001 is not my primary collection type but is on my list just because of its uniqueness.
Tomorrow by together 😊
If the engine is O.S. SE-B?? 😯😳 Same head as RF-B for side exhaust..... 😀 I saw the engine I missed. 😥😭😭😭
Thanks for the interest. Not sure if you were asking a question or just talking through engines. Enjoy!
@@VintageRcGarage I'm not interested in the engine Nice to see engine after so long... Because it's an engine with memories... ☺🥺😢 ☕
Thats why i love the vintage more then the re-release... the presentation pack is far superior then the newest. Amazing video btw. I'd like to see more af these videos around... luckely i found yours, Thanks.
Small differences do make a difference. I plan on doing many more. The next one I think I will do is the XR311. Glad you enjoyed it!
They did a nice job with the car, but I think the greatest (and probably only) disappointment is the decal sheet. Looks like no liscensed decals, so as far as I can tell, just a bunch of semi-lookalike, made up company names. The original sponsor decals give it a much more authentic feel, while the new sheet makes it look more toylike. It's a shame, really. You said the most noticeable to you was the KC Daylighter lamp covers, which are very noticeable on the box, but on the sheet and on the car, the most notoceable to me is the giant NGK spark plug logo on the hood. The new Tamiya Racing logo is nowhere near as attractive. I am sure they did it to save from paying liscensing fees, but I really wish they had kept at least a few of them. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for the kit to have them. Anyway, thanks for the video. It was very well done. Have a good one.
Yeh unfortunately Tamiya stopped using real logos a long time ago. Any re-re you see will not have the same original logo decals. Thanks for watching.
I think this was the last buggy on this layout? Then came Burns, Turbo Burns, Inferno which looks a lot like todays buggys.
I am not that familiar with the Kyosho line as this is my only non-tamiya I have ever built. I do recognize a number of the parts and design features from the Vanning on a number of other models.
@@VintageRcGarage Thank you for replying! I remember these buggys from the catalogs but I was to to young to own any of them. I did some research; Land Jump was Kyoshos first 1:8 4WD offroad, and was released 1980. It had a similar tube body as the Vanning but the old style suspension. Vanning was released in 1986. 1987 came another version with the same (?) chassis, called Presto which had a polycarbonate body. 1987 also saw the release of Burns. Yuichi Kanaisgot got involved with the Turbo Burns in 1989 which had some improvements (like a wing for example) and in 1991 Kanai developed the Inferno (MP1) with Kyosho Team. This was a real game changer and won everything following years. My buddy got the Inferno and I gotta say all the dudes in the neighbourhood was pretty jealous. I still had my Stinger MK2 and it was a toy in comparison to the Inferno. Later I got the Turbo Inferno and me and my buddy started racing seriously :)
Thanks for the info!
Nice video! Do you happen to know the size of the dampers/ shocks? I need to replace some missing ones that im trying to build. I wish there was a tutorial for these cars on here. It will make a killing in views as a lot of people are getting more and more interested in this model but is intimidated at the lack of knowledge. Thanks
I have a used one someday I will restore. I pulled the shocks off that one and the front shocks max eye hole to eye hole are 83mm and the rear 94, center to center was 81 and 92. I have so many project I could do, its hard to prioritize them.
Hey where do you get the aluminium lower suspension arm mounts from?
I bought the TXT way back in 2016 and those arms came with the bundle. I did look and they are listed as Integy 139mm arms. I did find these that look to be very similar. www.ebay.com/itm/266152264460
This is a fantastic side-by-side comparison. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I really like your deep dive into the differences down to the packaging, parts trees and parts themselves. Really very very interesting. I do prefer the blister pack on the box on the inside. It's more techy and the bins can be used to store parts.
Thank you. Definitely agree on the blister pack.
Great review. The Clod is awesome. I have my origianl one from 1988 and just sits in my glass case. I have 3 others built and 4 in the box. Those are all Super Clods.
I just pulled out my left over parts after this queen build and plan on making a working version.
It's like Tamiya designed the suspension to work for the body and not the wheels/axles 😆
It’s not great but still way better than the suspension setup on the Clod Buster.
@@VintageRcGarage I can't wait to build my Clod! It's mostly JConcepts tho 😁 I wish I could afford a TXT!!! I'd run it just like that too, once 😆 🤣
I really wish they molded the body in yellow like they do the wheels. Great comparison video.
The body is interesting. It is amazing how many different shades of yellow you can end up with just by playing with the color of the primer.
Very useful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool I remember those and the Mint from the 80s.
The Vanning was definitely a more technical build compared to most of the vintage Tamiyas. Building a runner right now.
Thanks mate, great video. I brought my first RC Blackfoot in 1988, she stills runs. A couple of years ago my wife brought Monster Beetle for a present and it brought back a lot of memories😂😂😂. So I have been collecting all the ones I have always wanted……I got 7 built so far, 8 still in the box😁😁 and I have roughly another 15 I want to get. Very similar to your collection🤙🏿🤙🏿✊🏾✊🏾. Catch up and happy collecting👋🏿👋🏿👋🏿
It’s amazing how the memories come back. I got my daughter a vintage Blackfoot when she was young that someone had painted pink. Hard to think about parting with it. Have fun collecting!
I love it . Had one in the 80s and regretably sold it. So im gratefull for the re-release , now i got one again to enjoy in my retirement. Best gift to myself, ever. The fact that its a van is special to me coz i love vans .🚐
Painting the hard body is a challenge but fun to do. Glad you were able to enjoy it!
Did you create a video building the Tamiya Fox? It would be great if you create (or created)a build video.
Take a look ua-cam.com/video/7GzT_Xf5L40/v-deo.html
The no guts no glory sticker is the frog stamp. My dad bought one when I was born in 83
I had a hornet when I was a kid but my neighbor had the Frog.
