Ucluelet Storm Waves

On December 14, 2024 I woke up to what would be a beautiful day of chasing storm waves along the Ucluelet, BC shoreline! This short film shows a few storm wave moments I captured from the shore as well as from the air. And please play in 4K if able to.

The Painted Night

My wife Sandra & I headed to Whistler from our home in Ucluelet in anticipation of an impressive aurora borealis show on the night of May 11/24. Having lived in Whistler for 26 years, and shot the aurora dozens of times there, I wanted to experience the potentially big show from my old home town. After spending the day scoping shooting locations, I decided we should begin the night on a spot lo...

Yukon Light
Переглядів 53Рік тому
In September 2013 I headed to the Yukon with my buddy Jon Paine for 11 days of discovery. Most of this movie was shot during our 5 nights camping in Tombstone Territorial Park as well as along the Dempster & Alaska highways. While we experienced everything from driving rain, wind & snow (in the alpine), when the skies cleared and then the northern lights came out ... well, there are few words t...
Whistler Deep Sky

This short film is the result of 3 years of exploring Whistler's amazing mountains, lakes and 'deep sky' (incl parts of Garibaldi Provincial Park). After many 'adventures', countless sleepless nights & untold frames (from my reliable Nikon gear), I've only scratched the surface of what's around this stunning place I call home - Whistler, BC. Thank you to everyone's patience as I frequently put ...
The 2018 Super Blue Blood Moon
Переглядів 142Рік тому
On January 31, 2018 a rare celestial phenomena occurred, a total lunar eclipse combined with a super moon that was also the 2nd full moon of the month! It was a very overcast/cloudy night so I wasn't too hopeful. That said, my friend John & I drove around Whistler searching for gaps in the sky and fortunately found a few. While I didn't get the shots I had previous scoped & planned for, it turn...

'Into the Storm' is a little more frantic look at our night skies than my usual fair. This time lapse footage was shot in and round Whistler, BC as well as the Big Island of Hawaii over the past few years, with most being captured over the past year or two. I've tried to represent the various elements of the night sky that keep bringing me back again & again to sleepless, stunning & inspiring n...

Magnetic Baffin - the short
Переглядів 41Рік тому
For 8 days in late August 2018, Jon Paine, Uli Schmill & I explored Auyuittuq National Park - a true natural & national wonder! I'm hoping this film is able to convey, in even a small way, how incredible this trip was to each of us, why it's important to protect places like this and why I can hardly wait to get back to this part of the Canadian north. Note that this is the short/condensed versi...

This follow-up to my previous Whistler short films, further explores the natural & incredible wonders of Whistler's landscapes & skies but now as it relates to its two main seasons ... less snow vs more snow! Great stuff! I missed to come there, again. Been there 3 years ago and was lucky to catch waves with some sun. I wonder how this rock garden looks in a good storm. All foam probably? 48.953152881940554, -125.59307491935681 And what and how do you fly near Coast Guard helipad, in that kind of wind? :) Very cool video!

Unfortunately I have no idea when is a good time to see the northern lights as it depends on so many factors - the sun's solar activity, cloud cover, moon phase, etc.

Honestly, it's tough to see the aurora in Whistler, especially in the Winter when it can be mostly cloudy. Thus why this was a 10 year project. But generally you need to be looking north'sh with a clear view to the lower horizon, maybe from Rainbow Park, Lakeside Park, etc.

Thx Joel - yes, Parks Cda makes us do a mandatory orientation where the topic of polar bears is addressed. That said, it's more of an issue if you're entering the trail from the north end!
