When I did my camino, walked from branca (the donativo just north of nova) walked thru sao jao, and made my diversion to Santa maria de feira. Now that's a lovely place to spend the night. It has a castle, nice accommodations, relaxing park, oldie town vibe, thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Just another option.

You ate at Ha Leitao, my favourite restaurant on the whole camino path. From the outside, nothing special, but look inside! A fireplace, tiled walls, friendly host with hie mum cooking the food. Good home cooked meals worthy off a fancy restaurant. Full with locals during lunch, and it only cost me 12 euro. I have very fond memories of me and an aussie couple, coming in out of the rain, to be welcomed by the enticing smell of pork.

I screwed up in Pontevedra ~ but the Camino does provide! We were planning on a rest day there, but due to my screw up (forgot to book one date as we were going along), we ended up taking two rest days there. No harm! In Armenteira we stayed at a very nice, but very rural place 1.5 miles out of town. Had to walk back and forth to get to that bar in town for food. It all worked out!

Pizza with knife and fork? It's a "nay" for me but I'm portuguese, I eat things like grilled sardines, fried "petingas" (very small sardines), clams, snails, shrimp, barnacles and many other things with my hands. 🙂 13:05 - Ok, now I understand the thumbnail. At first I thought you ate roasted suckling pig but all that blood dripping from the pig didn't add up. 😄 One thing about pig's blood is that it doesn't have the iron taste that people associate with blood, which is usually what makes them shy away from dishes that have it. We even used to make cakes with it (ah, childhood memories...) but modern food hygiene and safety regulations "kill*d" many traditional things. If there's still anyone making them, it's usually behind closed doors and only for self-consumption.

3:04 - You've eaten so many of those, I think it's time you know how they're called in Portuguese: Tosta Mista. It's not exactly a sandwich because sandwiches are made with a non-toasted loaf of bread, so you can call them Ham and Cheese Toast for your international audience. 🙂 16:40 - A stream next to a building with a tunnel underneath? 10:38 - Nice that you caught that blockhead that was almost flattened by the semi. Tradies are some of the worst drivers here in Portugal, more often than not the road rules mean nothing to them.😠 19:00 - Those are called "Pataniscas". They can be made with various things, not only bacalhau. 19:08 - You got it backwards: the cod comes very salty (that's why it's called salted cod fish) and has to be put in fresh water for two or three days to remove part of the salt to be consumable. During those days the water has to be continuously changed, otherwise it becomes saturated and loses its "desalting" effect. 🙂
