Tractor Pulling - Great Dorset Steam Fair 2022
Some of the Friday night session at the tractor pulling. The camera was struggling to focus into the night session so this was just the first couple of hours. The tractor pulling at the Great Dorset Steam Fair is for demonstration only, so you get a lot more pulls in the time than you do in competition events.
There are lots of Ford's and Fordson's doing the pulling, indeed they account for the vast majority. But I've also included some of the others, including the Thorneycroft truck, and guest pulls by a Scammell 6 wheel drive and Colossus the steam engine.

I noticed that the sound wasn't strong bass. I guess it wouldn't of been a very powerful amp. I wonder what it would sound like if you were able to pair of better quality speakers or brand speakers. (In their on speak box)

I bought the same setup in 1972 iirc. The 13x8 EMIs with a Garrard SP25 MkIII were to be seen in a lot of budget systems at the time. I kept them for a year or two before upgrading to 'hifi'. Thanks for the trip down memory lane :-)

When I was in middle school in 1966 I bought a Philco stereo receiver system for about $26.00 and played the heck out of it, now my wife wonders why I buy tube Fishers and Dynacos and Sherwoods and I tell her I want to listen to things I couldn't afford when I was a kid.

I bought a Philco Super 20 stereo in about 1973/74 for £50 from Comet Warehouses in Eastleigh, Hampshire. This was when you could pay by cheque and they had a dual photo machine which took an image of you and your cheque. We were poor, but my mum and dad had taken out endowments long before for our 15th birthdays which my brother and I both spent on stereos. Comet was a very exciting place for the growing interest in hi-fi and the new colour tvs. Japanese hi-fi separates were arriving, and things looked pretty good for budget hi-fi buyers. Comet had their own brand, Solavox, as well as plenty of famous names. Their shelves stretched up high and things were set out in the new warehouse style for quick turnover and low prices. It made Curry's look even more dreadful than they already were, with their HMV radiograms and Dansette mono record players. Comet produced a cheaply printed tabloid-sized price list each week which I would pore over for hours. One day I hoped to be able to afford some of these amazing hi-fis with outputs like 50 watts per channel rms. The thought made my head spin! Carrefour, now Asda, were selling hifi separates like the Sansui quadrophonic systems, and also Rigonda record players and miniature tv sets. I'd stand and stare at these wonderful things for hours. My Philco Super 20 was a combination am/fm tuner, 10+10 watts rms amp and an autochange record deck, which I stripped of its autochange mechanism as it looked too pedestrian for my blossoming hi-fi snobbery and my lads bedroom. I'd read in HiFi Answers or somesuch that an autochanger meant you were more Currys style than serious Comet hi-fi style. It looked the business to me, and sounded great for a schoolboy's budget. I used to play Genesis, Led Zeppelin and my pop 45s, or the Alan Freeman Saturday show at high volumes, much to my mum's consternation. My parents had never heard sound so good ("lovely tone") or so loud. My dad was happy as, like many people who'd lived through the war he despised the Japanese and wouldn't have anything Japanese in the house. We assumed the Philco was British made or American. Whereas things in my £50 price range like the Rigonda Party Time, Fidelity UA4, HMV record player etc looked really crass, like stuff from Brian Mills catalogue, I felt my Philco set me apart as more knowledgable, a sort of budding hi-fi expert. With the bedroom lights dimmed the lovely illuminated green and black tuner dial could be mistaken for a proper hifi I felt. There were no amenity waste places with discarded hi-fis or stereos in those days - NOBODY threw anything away, even wartime radios, on which we listened to 247m Radio 1 and the new FM local stations like BBC Radio Solent (then mono FM) and Radio Victory. If we wanted stereo reproduction it had to be newly bought, and consumer electronics by comparison to today were much more expensive. I loved my Philco and only parted with it when I started work and bought hi-fi separates (crap ones, but they seemed magnificent!). What lovely innocent times.

I have this system with a matrching Garrard SP25 in Philco Ford plynth and perspex cover. With a period high output Cartridge (Goldring g800) and a decent LP this sounds very nice. There is good hifi (expensive hifi) and enjoyable hifi, this very enjoyable hifi. The Amplifier has a nice full sound, you will be surprised if you have not opened the speaker cabinets , the drive units are large elliptical EMI with centre mounted tweeters. Elliptical speakers have a sound all their own and these are some of the largest ever made and sound very good .

I had the same system, so did my cousin, and my dad's friend! My uncle worked at Ford in Warley, near Brentwood, which I think is how we all ended up with this system. Staff discount I guess! I inherited the Philco/Ford with the matching Garrard SP25mk III turntable & the EMI speakers around 1978 when my dad upgraded to a nice Aiwa/Technics/Celestion system. Being an inquisitive kid I took the back off the speakers, up until then I really had no idea what was inside a speaker cabinet! (I was 7 years old!) and to this day clearly remember the big elliptical EMI drivers with a horizontal bar across the centre where the tweeter was mounted. I don't remember there being any crossover circuit though! I remember the metal trim on the speakers coming un-glued, bit by bit, till eventually all 8 pieces had been evo-stik'd back for good!! The system lived on till the early 80s, eventually replaced by a rather more stylish Panasonic music centre, but I still have very fond memories of my first proper stereo system...listening to such classics as The Wombles greatest hits, Baccara's Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, and Hall and Oates! Eclectic taste for a 7-yr old! 😄 I managed to bust the stylus one day, and being a very naughty little boy I nicked the cartridge from a "Goodsell" record player we had at school...had the same Garrard deck with the C2 slide mount "cartridge carrier"...and at 7 years old I very quickly discovered how absolutely SHIT ceramic cartridges were! (the one I nicked!) Fortunately my dad's friend had a hi-fi shop and sold me a cheap Ortofon cart for 5 quid - FF15 or something like that - didn't thrill me though...wasn't happy again till I got myself a Shure M55E...an audiophile in the making! Didn't think I'd ever see this thing again, so thanks for the memories! Thanks for posting! 😄
