    The AIDS epidemic robbed the world of so much talent. I lived through the 1980s and I'll never forget the callous disregard shown by the Reagan and Bush (1) administrations. So many lives lost, so much suffering, such a tragedy. I have only recently begun to really appreciate Arthur J. Bressan Jr.'s work. He captured on film a moment in American history (the post-Stonewall, pre-AIDS era of gay liberation) that will never be repeated.

    😮 Who was that lady on the piano singing in that Jan Walman restaurant in New York back then? She had the worst singing voice ive ever heard. It was so incredibly out-of-tune it was embarrassing 😳 they had HER entertaining people in the restaurant?? How could anybody eat with her voice cracking so horribly?

    Vito Russo's Celluloid Closet was wonderful. It opened my eyes to so much reading it in the late 80s. I think he was already gone by then.

    🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 So far.. THIS IS THE BEST REMASTERED PRINT of An Emerald City Episode that has been discovered. It is sharper and clearer than when it probably aired live 45 Years Ago... only IF all the Emerald City shows could be of this high quality...

    😢 Poor Frank... Such a great personality and handsome too. The attractive ones seem to be the first to go during the 1980's plague. They were so sought after that the odds were stacked against them 🙁

    The sense of foreshadowing here is remarkable. They sense something is coming without being able to put it in words. Did any of these men survive AIDS?

    Rosilyn Kind (Barbra Streisand's kid sister) had a gorgeous voice too... but rumors in Hollywood were that Barbara used all her vast influence to keep her little sister from ever making it big, because she said she didnt want another Zsa Zsa Gabor/Eva Gabor competition ever going on. Barbra could be/or still is A very selfish witch

    Kramer identifies the problem without realizing it. It's COMMUNITY. Gay men need each other to become themselves. Kramer had achieved a kind of emotional integration that few gay men had by that point. Exploring WHY few gay men had that kind of emotional integration would have made for a more interesting story because it's still true for many gay men today.

  • @Matthew-p2h
    @Matthew-p2h Місяць тому

    Kramer makes the mistake of taking people at face value. No group of people is honest about their lives. MAGAites today lie continuously about every single moment of their existence. They are frauds to the core. They celebrate pretense and dishonesty. THAT is the issue Kramer should have explored more directly, honest among people other than gay men. Gay men's problems were from the internalization of dishonest cultural narratives. This is also NYC-specific. Gay life in Chicago and Seattle, where I was in the 80s, was much less intense and sexualized than in NYC.

    Love this the dark hair guy looks like my father, wow though I never knew about this show because I'm to young to have seen it. It's sexy and engaging I didn't know the parts of new York mentioned in the Comercials. I lived in New york but I was sheltered and young so I missed things and I was there in the early 2000. I wish I could have been there in the 70s

    An amazing time capsule of the period before. Death was already there, just under the surface. Larry Kramer was remarkably prescient. Gay or straight, those were great years to be alive in a city like New York: the birth of punk, hip hop, Studio 54. A place you could live without a ton of money. That America is long gone.

    This was groundbreaking tv for its time. Casey Donovan was the first super star of porn. He was more talented than sex on film. Highly educated and vibrant - what a tragedy that a decade after this was filmed Donovan was dead. 😢

    “Nowadays” sure is a poignant song in this context. I’m always out of time, feel like I was born too late - piano bars like that would’ve been right up my alley.

    During the early to mid 1970s, HIV infections was already occurring in the United States (i.e. New York and California). Filmaker Arthur J. Bressan Jr., in this interview, died of AIDS-related complications on July 29, 1987 at the age of 44, meaning that he was most likely infected with HIV around the time of this interview in 1977.

    Unfortunately, while this may have been pre-AIDS, it definitely was not pre-HIV, as HIV infections in early 1970s United States was already prevalent.

    This episode is mentioned in John Lennon's collected letters - he told his personal assistant to buy both the record Hurricane Anita by Lin Frizzel & the Looking Good book by Charles Hicks, Lennon was a fan of the programme Emerald City too, thought it was cool that gay people were making quality tv for gay audiences
