    oh my God. He just said you don't even know what it's like to be in this relationship without OCD and that is, just, massive. It's true. I've had enormous recovery in the last two years and am finally reaching a point where I really am stepping away from symptoms and I'm realizing, I kind of don't know myself. I don't know what I'm like without OCD and I don't know what my relationships will be like, but so far it has been very very sweet. All my love to everybody out there suffering.

    You can basically go and watch porn.. I cannot stress enough how much I LOVE this guy. 😂 His approach is what I needed. Especially because he leaves room for personal experience.. being told what I need to do and having to do it is, I think, pretty much what fuels my OCD. So.. thanks, Dr. Greenberg. I appreciate you so much!

    I have recently been diagnosed with OCD, mainly “presenting” as health anxiety. It presented in different ways over the years. Rumination has always been the real problem. I love this guy 😅.. thank god I stumbled over Michael while googling “ocd rumination”. Thanks reddit. 😂

    I wish there was more of this energy in the scene. Firebrand, intellectual, challenging received wisdom. It's so helpful. Even if it ends up being wrong, at least it gets everyone thinking about what they're doing, instead of just mindlessly regurgitating PowerPoint presentations and cliché. The whole field of OCD treatment has come about through people trying to do things differently and get rid of unhelpful treatment strategies.

    At 35th minute , talk on EXTERNALIZATION, My view : Externalization is both good and bad . It depends on how we use it . For example when OCD intrusive thoughts hit , we label it as OCD and it's not me its good to detach or not sink in OCD thought . When you use I have OCD in a worry some way and ruminate on it, it's bad. So what he says in the video is Just considering intrusive thoughts as normal human experience, it may be true for intrusive thought but OCD is much more than that it's grown or complicated intrusive thought rather let's say Inferal confusion with Rumination with large amount of Anxiety . It's not that easy or its makes further guilt and confusion on accepting as human experience. So all the teachings or knowledge has to be used wisely. It's like you have to move , how ? In water by swimming and in sand by walking . It's not the same but results are same you are moving.

    Does that make sense?? No it doesn't. Fearing or not fearing is not my choice. I am here because I fear.. So the only way to do it is to do despite the fear. I may be anxious, I may not be, but yes I will try not to engage with rumination while I am doing exposures

  • @sanjayatimilsina5799
    @sanjayatimilsina5799 Рік тому

    U are able to not engage only once U develop the skills of not engaging through ERP. Yes not ruminating and not engaging is Key, but that is through ERP isn't it.. I just won't have skill capacity to not engage if it bothers me so much.. It can only be done after I am exposed to my fear.. Essentially U are saying what ERP and ACT says

    • @yark618
      @yark618 7 місяців тому

      I don’t know the ins and outs of the theory, all I know is by definition you have the capacity to not do something - in this case not engaging your analytical mind. Yes the urge to do something may be fierce, but I think that is the exposure which happens implicitly.

    I loved what Dr Greenberg said about not having to do “values actions” to get rid of ocd. Many of us already have moral scrupulosity issues and telling people to do “values therapy” just adds to our feeling guilty about everything.

  • @55tranquility
    @55tranquility Рік тому

    First of all I was oh man why you got to go heavy on ACT? Because I found it helpful and I also found ERP helpful. But then I went to his website and read up and thinking this really does make sense. So from all the articles he has put online i applied if all to myself at home. All i can day is shizzle my dizzle 🔥🔥! It was so effective, so, so simple and so fast it also is so logical it leaves little room for any questions. I was in a fairly good place of recovery and kind of had accepted I’m fine with living with background anxiety - but bloody hell, this is the first time my anxiety has dropped to 0 !! I also completely understand the reason for my anxiety is that rumination had become a compulsion, a safety behaviour that i could choose not to do, I saw clearly just how much I ruminated without really realising it! Its brilliant!!

  • @55tranquility
    @55tranquility Рік тому

    Very interesting, I find this very interesting. I made great steps forward with ERP, and i do absolutely understand that they are just thoughts. But widening my idea of what rumination is has basically shown me - that bloody hell some things that I was just putting up with are only rumination, seeing clearly that basically I am asking myself questions that don’t have an answer and don’t need an answer - this is great. I am a big fan of mindfulness but i realised that there is a big difference between having my attention on say my breath and gently having my breath in my awareness- its quite a blurry line but it’s basically not using mindfulness to push out or cancel thoughts rather a gentle way to have my mind settle without forcing my attention on something.

    I think it's hard for women to be vulnerable as well as for men.. I think the root of it is not just not wanting to look weak, but protection. Protection of MY image, how I look, what people think of me, what I think of me, protection from discomfort, or social rejection, shame, or bullies who might take advantage. I think the root of not wanting to be vulnerable at the end of the day is pride. AKA putting myself first, my needs first, my security first, my desires first, my image first, my life FIRST... When i put other people first in my life I can be vulnerable because I care more about making them feel understood, cared for, secure, etc. This is why we truly need forgiveness and strength to love people like God loves us... We need Jesus's forgiveness!

    This makes so much sense. In 2019 I had intrusive thoughts but I didn'tl know i had ocd so I thought it was ptsd and ignored it. Even though the thoughts were still there. In a week or two i didn't even remember that happened. Whenever they came up I ignored them and carried on with whatever I was doing. Then in 2021 I started ruminating again but this time I did analyze them. I did give the thoughts too much time and got stuck in a loop. My experience really underscores this idea of ruminating being the key to ocd.

  • @CitizenofDystopia
    @CitizenofDystopia 2 роки тому

    His technique definitely has a place in OCD treatment, but he is wrong about anxiety being about rumination and having exposure without anxiety. Anxiety is an emotion elicited by our limbic system, so we don't choose to experience it or pre-think about it. We simply experience it and then react to it. What stopping rumination helps with is the part where we basically "feed" the anxiety and provoke it to be greater and a habit. Exposure will always be key if you want to eliminate your anxiety so that you can habituate. Also, agreeing with the thoughts is much easier over time than to try to fight them. This is because when you agree there is little room for the thoughts to continue attacking you

    • @gavinduggan199
      @gavinduggan199 2 роки тому

      He’s not arguing that you should fight the thoughts. It’s about letting them be there and just not focusing any attention on them. I suffer from Pure O and rumination is everything basically when it comes to suffering. If I don’t ruminate, I get better quite quickly.

    Thanks Dr. Greenberg for being so compassionate and bringing in your great ideas, as a MD I cannot wait to (hopefully) read your future studies about RF-ERP, best in comparison to a control group treated with classic ERP, especially in the context of the rumination-heavy subjects such as S-OCD or ROCD. In my own experience heavy classic ERP situations don't work as long as the rumination is not adressed thoroughly up front because the sufferer will make every exposure a test and doubt every result afterwards. It only works for the subgroup that is mostly using avoidance compulsions, not those using 24/7 analysis and checking compulsions.
