    I personally advise against physical therapy as a career choice. With patients moving to Medicare Advantage plans due to great marketing but giving poor service, a lot of patients are tricked into this option instead of having original Medicare. There's a lot of headwinds against our profession. 1. Medicare advantage plans that only want to give very few visits regardless of patient condition. I have patients begging me to get more therapy. Medicare advantage makes it impossible to give them proper care with low reimbursement and very few visits allowed. 2. Onset of PDPM and PDGM made physical therapy a liability meaning we actually cost the company money. the way it is set up is the company will get a lump sum based on acuity and diagnosis alone. This means that it is not in favor of the companies to give more visits than they should. The less care they gave patients the more money they kept in their pockets. 3. aside from the years and the debt. If you want to be a good therapist, you are doing back breaking work helping patients transfers and spending the time with them. you will get paid the same as another therapist who slacks off but writes a good note. if you want to be a doctor, be a REAL MD. we studied a lot but the work we actually do does not require a "doctorate" degree.

      Yeah I think PTA is actually better than PT due to the fact that you actually treat patients more than the PT! PT is responsible for a lot of progress notes, Eval, D/C etc while the PTA is responsible for mostly daily notes and maybe some progress notes (in some settings). I think it is situation dependent; as long as one really wants to work with people everyday, doesn’t mind the physical load your body will take and dealing with stress of productivity (which we have plenty of opportunities to feel that our during the clinical rotations) then go for it. I dont think that would change much of my personal decision due to the physical aspect and stress, but I know some who love PTA and even PT professions (which even can be a second career for many). I guess just not for me haha. I wish you luck in you endeavors.

      @@user-hn9qg5qm3o wow; you made a lot of really good points including the increased volume of patients per day being a PTA vs PT....more patients equal more documentation for you guys. Also PTAs are addressing many things in the goals to show progress....You are literally describing a rat race, in which it is almost impossible to catch up with unrealistic productivity measures. As a PT in the assisted living setting....I found I had to spend more than half of the time with patients documenting every single move I was making, spending every second doing outcome measures, justifying why I did what I did and justifying progress or the patient would be cut. In a way PT is mostly documentation and rarely treating in that setting. Now thinking of it PT vs PTA; Evals can help PTs with productivity because we are allowed extra time to type it up (60 to 90 min).....PTAs get NO such advantage AND seeing more patients back to back to back like you said. The Evals I felt is where I could finally take a break and sit down. I can understand why you feel or felt drained. Are you still working currently or did you stop? I don’t believe I read that and if you included it I apologize. Just curious.

    Hey! After a hard day at work, I stumbled here. I totally feel you. I'm in the OT field, and been in the field a few years. I often feel like a machine, being asked to treat person after person without a proper break. OT school made the field sound so fun, but it's so easy for me to feel burned out real fast. It almost sounds like the theory of helping people is there, but the actually action of helping people isn't really delivered in a very meaningful way much of the time due to the productivity demands, and really short minutes at times (I currently work in peds). I've been out of school a few years now and through so many settings but it's really hard to get super into it. I honestly see some people in the field with so much passion, and honestly I've never gotten there, even though most days I do like it for the most part. We always advocate for self care in the profession, but why don't we actually have the right to have that as employees? Anyways, just some of my thoughts. What are you working on/doing these days? I like how you talked about spiritual matters-- it's so important and life is not all about work. I am also on the search for more meaningful endeavors. Would love to connect more to see where this new journey has taken you!

    • @sarah29880
      @sarah29880 3 роки тому

      Hey! Omg exactly with schooling being like oh this is going to be fun, then actually getting in the field and being like did I sign up for burnout and severe stress lol. Interesting you mentioned you are in Peds. I only shadowed a day in Peds, but it seemed like it was slower paced than the rest, but sounds like you have tried all settings and get the same feeling of burnout in each of them; and being a machine at times yes. Let’s keep in touch! My Instagram is @wisdomscribble if you would want to stay in touch :)) Part of my reason for completely quitting too is because I have exertion issues with Lyme disease and it was making all my neurological pain worse daily from the stress, fast pace, and constant exertion and worry basically. Yeah my update is I took a couple years off for my Lyme recovery and currently working on getting my health coaching certification so I can start that part-time!

    • @sarah29880
      @sarah29880 3 роки тому

      Honestly if I didn’t have Lyme maybe I would have stayed in the field as well, I mean it is a good job and part-time I think would be semi-ok. But just with all the health issues I had, I wanted to go into a more hardcore treatment, and focus on getting my health back.

  • @kimsy520

    COTA here. I’m out of this field for the same reasons. And I don’t even have the same documentation as my OTRs and DOR. I’m still stuck in my job until I can get something else, but I would never recommend this field for anyone. Ever.

    • @sarah29880
      @sarah29880 3 роки тому

      Exactly. Between the patient volume and the insurance companies. I don’t know what bugs you the most or what setting you are in, but it’s like there are downfalls in each setting, and it’s not a low stress job by all means. Well you didn’t go for the masters and get OTR and have that much more debt and ending up not in the field. But working a job you hate is miserable, wish you the best moving on from your current situation.

    I agree, it's stressful. My advice as a PT for over 20 years. Do not go into this field. In today's society, the ROI is not worth the cost of the education, and you are low on the totem pole when it comes to the heirarchy of healthcare professionals. The reimbursement keeps going down. The only industry where you get paid less overtime, is in healthcare. If you are going to be a doctor, be a real doctor. Otherwise don't go into healthcare

    You would make a fantastic coach! I too strongly believe that for people to make changes they must make the choice themselves. So happy you are feeling better.

    I'm currently a PTA student, about to embark on my first clinical rotation, and I too have lyme disease. I've taken two leaves from my program due to the illness and now once again symptoms are arising due to the stress of the course work. It is bizarre how leading a healthy, careful, mindful lifestyle can all but eliminate symptoms, only for them to come crashing back due to stress. It took two years and four knee aspirations before I found out I had Lyme, and I often wonder if I will need to be extra careful for the rest of my life in order to keep symptoms dormant. I would love to speak with you about your experience with lyme, I connect very well with your dialogue. I'm glad I found you, best wishes. Jacob

      Are you still doing the nutritional balancing program? If so how long and what is your experience so far?

    • @sarah29880

      Rick Abbott I did do the program fully for about 4-5 months total. I became overburdened with Bartonella when I was not treating it specifically. So I did start antibodies and herbs/other supplements, which is not NB. That being said.... I am currently doing many components of the program such as coffee enemas, and infrared everyday. I took a more liberal approach to diet, even though I still partake in most NB concepts. I also added in things such as organ meat and cricket powder, with more of a focus on nutrient density. I need to focus more on the nutrient aspect of things because the antibiotics are stripping nutrients away. The protocol I follow for food is Autoimmune paleo protocol. Sorry long winded response but it’s a complicated answer. Usually I try and take what works of something and leave the rest.

    Loved this! Your story is quite interesting. This whole "needing validation from others" is definitely something I have been living all my life. I can totally relate!

    This was so powerful to hear. Acceptance is definitely something so many struggle with. But you can either be angry at everything or realize that this is what you got so make the most of it! You really end up realizing what actually matters in life.

    The mistake people are making is trying to treat the infections. Lyme/Bartonella shuts off the immune system to survive . Turning the immune system back on to remove infections is not that difficult. nbprotocol.proboards.com/thread/235/restoring-apoptosis
