Important is how large of a percentage a certain Ethic group is in and around the village. That is a good indicator of how high or low the crime rate is. Also if there are any problems with year around Water and electric.

Hrabrino is a nice village - the part of the village that you didn’t visit (on the road to Izvor) has a nice villa zone and plenty of relatively flat land that’s good for building on. The issue with the village that you picked up on is a lazy mayor (the old one was recently voted out so I have no idea about the new one) which means there’s no attempt to apply for European funding to develop the place, fix the dilapidated school where the bus dropped you off and generally keep the village clean and tidy. The advantages of Hrabrino are clean air, direct access to some beautiful mountain scenery and a climate that is less hot than Plovdiv during the summer, and usually warmer during the winter, since they’re not affected by the temperature inversions that sometimes cloak Plovdiv in fog and freezing temperatures in December, January and early February. Olives, figs and some palms thrive in Hrabrino and the surrounding Rhodopi collar.

I moved to Bulgaria almost 20 years ago now. Of all the countries I have lived in it truly stands apart. From rolling hills to valleys of roses to snow covered mountains, then on to the seaside, Bulgaria has it all. As if that wasn't enough the entire country is littered with ancient ruins and archeological marvels spanning from pre Roman empire all the way through to the stunning monasteries of the more recent past. I have spent almost two decades here and I still find new sights, fascinating ruins and beautiful landscapes to take in. I could do without the 40c+ summers but I guess it's just a good excuse to escape up to the mountains where it's lovely and cool.

Those wines are surprisingly expensive.

I just got back from Bulgaria myself and can honestly say that I was rather shocked at how expensive it was.We had taken the trip to see how realistic it would be to base ourselves there and take advantage of the low property prices and cost of living. The former is true, you get a lot of property for your money in Bulgaria, the latter is not, prices in Bulgaria are every bit as expensive as those in the UK. This came as something of a shock to us as we had been led to believe that the cost of living was much lower there. I suppose if you include things like rents and wine, then fair enough. The sort of stuff that makes up the staples of live though now cost just as much there as here in the UK. Some folks go on about Brexit and how that has affected prices here but in reality the continent has also been going through rampant inflation which, if anything, is even worse. In summary, Bulgaria is no longer a cheap country to live but still an interesting one if other aspects appeal to you (it's much quieter and cleaner than the UK for example).

Don't believe what you see. There is lots of rubbish in and around the village and lots of homeless dogs. There is not a doctor or dentist.
