BeatPoets is a couple of guys who create and record original music about life. This UA-cam channel was designed to promote that music through fun animations that follow the story lines of the songs. It has evolved into a discography of over 50 years of original music by Dave Schuller as either sole or co-writer.
439 Trigger
439 - Trigger (Lyrics 7/15-18/23, Music 7/17/23 D. Schuller)
This past Christmas, Peder gave me a gift card to Guitar Center with a note to use it for equipment needed to co-write a song for his band Trigger Armada. Heavy metal is a genera I have a really tough time embracing, and even a greater problem trying to write music for. This is my attempt to write enough that Trigger Armada can “take it from here”. The lyrics are based on their song “Armada” and an acknowledgement to their fans. It’s definitely not my best work, but one of the most difficult for me to do.

438 Grandpa Sez

438 - Grandpa Sez (Lyrics 5/21&22/23, Music 5/22/23 D. Schuller) Inspired by a story on Minnesota Bound of a biker/musician (Ben Weaver) who writes and performs songs about the environment. The following story was about Twin Metals, so the song came to me that night and I finished it the next day. It’s about making difficult decisions.
437 Another Rainy Day

437 - Another Rainy Day (5/5 & 8/23 Schuller) At some point before tackling “Indoor Cat”, I had jotted some lyrics related to the concept of a story about an indoor cat, which took me in a different direction from that song. I added the uptempo “dancing” part a few days later to change up the song a bit.
436 Grandpa's Still

436 - Grandpa’s Still (5/3/23 Schuller) I had written a note while at Brad’s “Grandpa’s Still” and thought of that as I sat down one morning to play guitar. I played a couple chords and the lyrics just flowed out of me. Once they were all on paper, I figured out a melody and recorded the initial version of the song. It was not what I had planned for the day, but sometimes things just happen. I ...

435 - Pulling Away (Lyrics 2017 B. Johnson, rev. 4/29/23 D. Schuller, Music 4/29/23 D. Schuller) Started with Brad’s scratchings “until the bell rings” and lyrics from “pulling away” and put these two lines to music and used the rest of Brad’s lyrics that just fell into the repetitious music. Recording Notes Schuller Studio One 4/29/23 except as noted

434 - You Are Here (Indoor Cat) (Lyrics 7/18/07 B. Johnson, rev 4/28/23 D. Schuller; Music 4/28/23 D. Schuller) The second of the three sheets from Brad contained the elements of this song. I had jotted “indoor cat” on his sheet and focused the lyrics on an indoor cat. The music is very reminiscent of other songs Brad and I have composed. I pulled the music and lyrics together and recorded the ...

433 - Under Snow (Lyrics 11/20/16 B. Johnson, Music & Revised Lyrics 4/22/23 D. Schuller) After a 3 year hiatus due to Covid, Brad & I got together and discussed our future as the Beat Poets. He was looking for poetic lyrics and solid music; I agreed. He handed me three sheets (“scratchings”) he tore out of his notebook of lyrics/poems he had all but abandoned. This was the first one I took on....

432 - Fork (formerly Changes - 097) (10/2/78, D. Schuller, rev 8/12/13, lyrics rev. 4/12/23 Beat Poets) In 2013 I rewrote the lyrics for Changes to be in the third person perspective, directed mostly at Erik. When I got together with Brad after a 3 year hiatus due to covid, I asked him to help me with the lyrics and we made enough changes to call this a new song.
431 Crash

431 - Crash (Lyrics 7/2/22 & Music 3/22/23 D. Schuller) I wrote the lyrics to this when on a bike ride in Bunker Park after passing several people running who were oblivious to me because they had ear buds playing music. The actual crash event never happened, but I came close a few times. Nine months later, I pulled out the lyrics from my phone notepad and put them to music, first starting with...
430 Hip Hop

430 - Hip Hop (Lyrics & Music 1/16/23 D. Schuller) I had the idea to write a hip hop song late in the evening 8/11/22. I sketched some lyrics at the time that I never used. When I picked up the concept, I pulled up a UA-cam of 50 rap and hip hop songs (a montage) and picked up the consistent beat. Humming it to myself, I laid down a beat box track and then used that to develop the lyrics and re...

429 - Dissonance & Harmony (Lyrics 12/15/22 & 1/8/23, Music 1/8/23 D. Schuller) I wrote the first verse after watching the divergent views of various news outlets and frustrated with the vitriol spewn by our pundits and politicians. I completed it several weeks later trying for a positive spin.
428 Quit

428 - Quit (Lyrics 9/22/21 & 1/5/23, Music 1/5/23 D. Schuller) I wrote the first verse years ago when feeling rejected by Deb. On a day when I figured I was done writing songs, I picked up those scraps of lyrics and wrote the rest of the verses, chorus and added music in less than an hour. The lyrics just flowed out. Later that day I wrote a fourth verse, but decided not to keep it. I liked the...

427 - Sunshine & Rainbows (Lyrics 9/24/22 & 11/16&19/22, Music 11/16/22 D. Schuller) The first line in this song came to me years ago as I thought about Deb and her approach to music. If it wasn’t upbeat and happy, she didn’t like it. I eventually wrote it down as a song idea. One day, after resisting writing any more songs because I didn’t think I could do any better than YMISIM, and wanting t...

426 - YMISIM not SUR (Lyrics 5/2/22 & 8/5/22, Music 8/5/22 D. Schuller) I came up with this acronym based on a similar James Taylor song while walking one day in May and finally came back to it in August 2022 finishing the lyrics and putting it to music I had written as a harmony part for Fog. The original demo recording was so bright I kept the first verse from that and replaced it in the thir...
425 My Dream

425 - My Dream (11/7/21,5/30/22,6/19/22 Lyrics, 6/5/22 Music by D. Schuller ) The first two lines came to me the day I tested positive for Covid but had no symptoms, while I was mowing. The rest I wrote in an attempt to show all I really want is for people to get along. I revised the second line to better quote Martin Luther King, recording the final vocals on my first and last “Juneteenth” hol...
Just squinted at the credits. Think I saw a drum machine listed there. Still a cool song.🙂
Dave- this is something never thought would hear from you. Wish to heck my stereo had Bluetooth. Would love to hear this in real stereo. Not a bad song. But definitely not your usual fare. Is that you on drums? They were the highlight of the song. You were holding out on us back then.🙂
Brought a tear to my eyes. Sad song. Think will be done with comments for today. Hope all is well with your mom and dad, Dave.
Giving this another listen. Figured out what some of this stuff is reminding me of… Family. An English band from the 60s and 70s. Ric Grech was lured away from them to play with Blind Faith. Anyway just bits here and there remind me of the band. They weren’t a real hard rocking band. Absolutely love them. Have all there albums. Music in a Dolls House a classic of progressive rock.
So have to add a comment. Thought the song was going to be about a runner.😊 Whoops. Nice minimalist sound. The juxtaposition of the solo was good. Sorry to hear Brad’s hands are so bad. Who knew we would have these problems when we got old. My thumbs from cooking are bad. Especially the right one from all the knife work. Probably from vacuuming everyday too And rowing grasping the oars.
Album cover artwork by Brad Johnson
Brad is mostly unable physically to play guitar, so that limits his music to lyrics and background vocals. The transition to the dancing bridge lightens up a gloomy song and just came to me as I wrote the song.
Thanks! It's the story of Deb's grandpa on her mother's side as handed down. Played a lot of jaw harp back when I was in Williams. Was pretty good back then. Rattles my teeth too much now, so must have lost my technique😮
Finally got this one listened to. Ha,ha,ha….funny story. Didn’t you say this was inspired by one of Deb’s relatives? Didn’t know you played Jaw Harp. You play that thing good, son!
Nice transition there. Really took it in another direction. The song is quite succinct isn’t it. That surprised me. I thought Brad was done with music. Going to have to reread your text. Album cover art by?
Wish I had Bluetooth on my stereo. Some of this stuff is real trippy and would be cool to hear in stereo. Now for the big question… which one of you two was into psychedelics? Ha,ha,ha…. Liked the song Dave.
Dave….this is the reason I have listened to a couple hundred of your songs. So I can say GD son, this is a good song. It may be your most complete song yet. By the end of the first listen I was thinking call Willie and offer him this song. This is a good song, Dave. Your playing is as good if not better than I have heard over the years. Waylon is gone or would have said call him. I know Marty Robbin’s is still kicking but don’t know if he is still performing. Hitting your stride at 66. Don’t quit now, Dave. Ha,ha,ha….🙂
That darn pinky will get you every time. A truly nice homage to your wife. Your love for her shines through, Dave. No pun intended either. Can still remember your wedding and how you and Deb were beaming during the ceremony. Knew that day you had truly found your soul mate! Congratulations to you both.
Ruined the whole vibe…😵💫
And I don’t know how the word naive worked it’s way in there. Damn auto correct!😡
Dave- funny that this is the song you post for this month. I just listened to BSUR a couple of weeks ago. Someone somewhere had posted about JT and I had to listen. This was a really sweet little tune. It is the kind of thing wish I had gotten into more naive when I played. The real essence of what acoustic playing is. Thank you for posting this one.
A little speechless Dave. Didn’t know you cared so much. A beautiful tune. Certainly brings to mind a 1960s civil rights anthem. Pretty sure that is what you were going after. If you have the other version still around would be interesting to hear. Heard some Jimi Hendrix on the radio yesterday. Been a long time. 😊
Where did this come from? Caught me off guard. First I can recall this particular sound. Pretty sophisticated recording, Dave. You are getting real good with your equipment. The break was tight. Like the subject matter even if does date us.😂
Listening to a few of these a second time. Amazing what you could pull off with your home equipment. Would be interesting to hear this stuff in really good stereo.🙂
Hmm … just saw that I commented on this song once before. Missed the “Norwegian Wood” thing last time around. That only comes thru in the first portion of the song.
You are channeling the Beatles here! Listen again and you will be singing “Norwegian Wood” in sections.🙂 Then again the drum thing sounds like a good march beat. Anyway, nifty tune!
Having problems with YT this morning. Finally got in to be able to leave a comment. Sounds like a devil of an experience. Nice guitar playing here.
Who does the backing vocal? Is that you? I think it is…isn’t it. I just made the realization that my sobriety date is 4/21/2000. The day after 4/20. Just a little coincidence. The bass line is catchy as hell here. Like it.
It is a harmonica you use.
Finally! Had to reload this three times before it let me leave a comment. I liked this song. Have to finish the comment to look up the accordion effect. You make good use of that in your songs. Can see you strolling a Paris Avenue late in fall at dusk singing and playing the accordion. An interesting image of you, Dave. Anyway you hit the sweet spot with this number in terms of length too. Just right to leave this listener wanting more.
Nice little tune. You came up with the scales? This song could have been expanded upon. A nice jazzy sound to it.
This is all you? Expecting to hear that Brad was in there somewhere. You can hit a pretty good low note if you try! You got pretty serious with your tonal studies there for awhile.
Dave- this is absolutely terrible on my part…what year did you get married? Trying to put this song in perspective. Like the harmonica added. Gives it a bit of a squeeze box sound. Guess this is really an American sound.
Was going to say I noticed that this song is truly a solo effort. Nice ending…..
Trying once again to get caught up. And finally figured out could go to your channel to call up these older ones I missed. And this is one sad song, Dave. Glad you had music for an outlet. Vocals on this song are pretty good. Heartfelt is the word I am looking for. 😢
Wait a moment…found the date, 1988. Goes back a ways.
I remember listening to this way back when you first sent it. But for some reason I didn’t comment. A desperate sounding song. Do you remember what year you wrote this?
Why did this take a year to get here? I am confused. Otherwise an interesting song.
Well that was interesting. Got the bagpipes right off the bat even before reading the notes. And got the Scottish/English vibe too. Old folk tunes in there somewhere. Or more like an old march meets an old folk tune. And that is an instrument to take up in retirement, bagpipes!
How much time did you put into this? Crazy good, Dave. Continually blown away by your creativeness. And your lead playing is off the scale. I had a little trouble deciphering the lyrics….but the ears aren’t what they once were. No need to apologize to Peder for this.
Not that we look much older than that in the picture.
Don’t remember this at all. It had to be 6th grade….right?
My memory is of us sitting in the backseat of my parent's car on the way to the lake with an old mini reel to reel sitting between us. Yes, we were about 12 and in 5th or 6th grade. My voice was so high I attracted dogs🤣
I think I could sue you for posting this!
Geez us! Where did this come from?
The title of this song is familiar. Might have listened to it a couple of years ago. Yes it has a reggae sound to it. Where did you get the inspiration for this? Do you or did you listen to much reggae? Can see Bob Marley performing this. A background track for “Cool Running”.🙂
Hope that Brad is doing okay. You said you hadn’t talked to him in over a year. Is he retired now? Hope things are going okay for Jeff. Couple of guys who didn’t deserve the grief they have been through.
I think I have listened to this. Unless you wrote another song in this vein. No…it is this song I have heard. Can really understand your concern raising two boys and with the way life has changed. Have to say this is one of your Neil Young tunes. It is just raging with over-restrained NY!
Kind of a sweet tune. Like the little bend you have in hear. Spices it up. Makes me think of George Harrison for some reason. Just a little Beatle influence in here….maybe…right???
Don’t know how this one got by me. But see that I am a couple behind again. That is besides the other 126 songs haven’t gotten to yet. Nice little bass track there. Think I could have pulled that one off. Atmospheric is the word I have been searching for as I have been listening. How is retirement going?
You made it to the big time with this one, Dave! YT popped this one up randomly. My jaw dropped when I saw this as I was scrolling down the screen. And what happened to the instrumental for the month? Double whammy here. I suggest you write as upbeat and happy of a tune as you can for next month. That will show them all that you can be a pleasant and happy gut!🤓 Happy retirement by the way!
Well I am speechless. An amazing feat, Dave. And all of a sudden I am seeing your bedroom and your typewriter and you working on your summer newspaper. We must have been all of 10 or 11 at the time. How far you have come, Dave. What is it 19 days now until retirement? Congratulations on that. The pic of you, me, and Kevin standing in your front yard in our graduation robes comes to mind. Who knew that this was where we were going to end up? Good job, Dave! And Obi seemed to have come in right on cue. Thought of Tiny when I heard him.
Ha….listened a second time. Don’t know how I missed the train whistle the first time. My grandparents had a train track just the other side of the road from their backyard. Lake Osakis out the front yard and the train out the back yard. The train track is now part of a state bike trail. Thanks for the memory, Dave!
A song this personal deserves only praise. You can be thankful you have had the talent to put your thoughts and feelings into music. Something almost tangible you can hold onto. A sweet song Dave.
Prefer the first track to the second. But think I understand where you were going with the second track. The song was originally written in 1988 so it is a late 80s sound you were going after. Guess I more use to your “lone troubadour” sound Dave.🙂 But just listened to the ending chorus again. Amazed you could coax that much out of your limited equipment. Actually pretty cool.😊
Has kind of a country feel…or is it bluegrass I am hearing? The quick chord changes are interesting. Going to give it a quick second listen as it is pretty short.
