For those who aren't braindead. Eurovision is and will always be about European countries shitting on and trying to outdo each other. It isn't some grand anti-muslim conspiracy, like what kinda shrooms you have to be on to come to that conclusion. Eurovision is akin to some dudes fighting in carpark and then voting on who won and then everybody who votes isn't actually voting on who was the best but just voting for their best friend. Well, The Netherlands literally sent full black people (singer and dancers) from Suriname in 2021 with a song in a surinamese creole. France had sent a black singer in 1990, who had sung a song about Africa and black people. Right after in 1991, France had sent a female singer with arabic origins and the song was literally about colonization. I think nuances have to be made.

I am late to the party, but I decided to leave a comment anyway since I happen to be one of the 50 or so people that voted in the Song of Songs contest, so seeing it being used as one of the bases of how hypothetical pre-1997 televoting results would have been 10 years or so after it ended is quite surreal. One funny thing regarding Israel and Eurovision is their 2000 entry - "Sameach" by PingPong. The performance in Stockholm featured the band members waving both Israeli and Syrian flags. Now, anyone who knows the modern history of the Middle East, will know that Israel and Syria don't get along...at all due to the disputed Golan Heights, which Israel controls since the Six Day War in 1967. Waving the Syrian flag caused serious backlash in Israel and from the state broadcaster with all members of the band being disowned and that their participation was "a disgrace and a shame to the State of Israel, the Broadcasting Authority and Israeli culture" and the band members were "a band of crooks who misled us in an act of fraud." There's a good video essay by verilybitchie, called 'The (Queer) Politics of Eurovision' (or something along the lines), which explores mainly the LGBTQ+ aspect of the contest. It touches on how Sweden has used the contest in 2013 to portray itself as a liberal gay heaven when there were several restriction towards LGBTQ+ people as well as how Ukraine tries to paint itself as tolerant towards the community in recent years. It also touches on the West vs. East clash, as well as Terry Wogan's comments towards several participants mainly from Eastern Europe (like insulting Marija Šerifović's looks for example)
