Is Main Character Syndrome Ruining Tourism?
In today’s video, Kayla will talk about the commercialisation of witches through the centuries that have led to more positive depictions such as Hocus Pocus, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the newest Wicked Film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
She’ll explore dark tourism sites like Amityville, Chernobyl, Auschwitz and the Titanic as well as the Salem Witch Trials and whether main character syndrome and entitled tourists are contributing to overtourism. With her background in heritage tourism research, Kayla will talk about the ways tragedy has become cheesy from Titanic museums in Tennessee to the overcrowding of tourists at places like Santorini and Hawaii.

The Complicated Beauty Trend 'Iphone Face' and Period Dramas
Переглядів 126 тис.Місяць тому
In today's video, Kayla is doing a deep dive into the beauty trend "iphone face" or "smartphone face" in period dramas like the upcoming Wuthering Heights with Barbie's Margot Robbie and Saltburn's Jacob Elordi. Smartphone face has been a problem in Jane Austen's Persuasion, Netflix's Bridgerton and Greta Gerwig's Little Women. Kayla explores how iphone face can affect the authenticity of perio...

Would you have been very demure, very mindful in the Victorian Era? That’s what we’re exploring in today’s video, comparing the tik tok trend started by jules lebron, with its historical beginnings. We go through demure examples from Jane Austen characters, like Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Charles Dickens’ Little Dorrit. We also look at the use of demure in true crime in the Victoria...

I don’t get the obsession with Salem in October, it just feels… disrespectful I guess? It’s boiling down a serious tragedy to “WITCHY TOWN!!!!!!” And makes me feel gross to see. Like… would you do that kind of nonsense at the 9/11 memorial and LARP as a zombie? No. No you would not. And like it’s repeatedly emphasized, it’s a TOWN and not like a renn faire!
At least Amy March was supposed to be beautiful. I loved Florence Pugh in that adaptation.
i live near boston and i love salem but ever since they stopped doing the small business stands it’s not worth it to me to go in october! pretty much everything is there all year except for the haunted tours which is not really my thing anyway. cute town with lovely shops!
I remember thinking Kate Winslet looked too "modern" for a period drama back in the day, but I completely forgot about it and now perceive her as an great actress for it. I'm curious how we'll be looking back on these adaptations...
yeah, that's a good point!
Disney wasn’t an evac zone. If you were already there it was better not to leave (though if it was an upcoming trip obviously wait). The hotels were perfectly safe. Most of thr time you only need to drive a few minutes to be out of an evac zone. There was so much false hysteria about needing to leave the state to be safe The issue is that Disney kept the parks open (as opposed to just hotels), but barring that it’s that they didn’t offer spare rooms to workers and their families who lived in or commuted via an evac zone. If you don’t want to completely shut down, then you need to ensure to safety of staff personally.
Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy was more recent. It came out during the pandemic so was a bit forgotten. It’s very quirky but I loved it. I agree we need a sweeping epic though. Tv is great but there’s nothing like Colin Firth proclaiming his love. ❤ thanks for this video. Historical tapping is my new favorite genre
yeahh I just forgot about it cause of Covid. It was a great adaptation though! Thanks for watching <3
Regarding your intro comment about there not being any new big budget period dramas in the last 10 years... dont sleep on Emma! I loved that adaptation
I think the reason these regency shows fail so bad is bc the producers of the shows think the bigger the name the better the show will do. FALSE I, much like millions of others, want to see actors that fit the character best! Not the hottest/sexiest actor at the time. Like it’s just so weird seeing someone who’s supposed to be 15 in 1812 with lip fillers and Botox.
The hair and costumes were completely off. I stopped watching after 2 minutes.
Just found your channel interesting take. A few things I want to bring up 1) George Washington - teeth were not wooden dentures but teeth of the enslaved folks on his plantation. 2) Movies often rime choose makeup trends of the time for example if you look at 1997 Titanic so much research went into that fillm to make sure it was accurate however Kate Winslet make up meets the standards of the late 1990s ie thin eyebrows - and heavy makeup. 3) Margo Robbie might have been cast because she is producing and that could have been the only way the movie 🍿 would have been done. It;s common Denzel Washington simply wanted to direct his movie The Great Debaters but the studio was like if you I want to direct this you got to be in it. The same could have been the case for Margo it could have been considered a risky move the film since you shared their hasn’t been a big historical drama piece in years,
The only thing I keep coming back to is the 1995 Pride and Prejudice as the balance of modern looks with historical accuracy. The actress who played Jane literally looks like a painting that Jane Austen once referenced as being “Mrs Bingley” and very much fits the regency ideal, while Jennifer Ehle is appealing to the modern eye while still not feeling like she’s taking you out of it being a period piece. Add in the literal reproductions of historical garments (and the presence of enough hair pins, thank you Frock Flicks for coining the term “the great hairpin shortage”), and it’s simultaneously the most accurate period drama in many ways, while at the same time being the origin of some ways of modernizing dramas (read, the lake scene, which is honestly more appealing than Darcy just being sweaty, so I don’t think it was a bad choice, but it clearly was a choice). I guess what modern adaptations seem to lack is enough of the period stuff to make up for the “let’s make this better tv” parts that are necessary. [side commentary, you can tell I’m over 40 by my having never heard of “iPhone face” and my immediate jump back to the 1995 P&P because the 2005 was so sadly disappointing to my graduate school self…]
I’m from Norfolk, England. I grew up in the south of the county and spent a fair bit of time in Diss on the border, and in Suffolk. Actors who can do our accent or a Suffolk accent (similar but with some differences noticeable to locals) are incredibly rare. Most end up doing a sort of generic West Country accent. I actually cried when I watched The Dig and heard Ralph Fiennes nail the Suffolk accent perfectly 🥹
I loved The Dig!!
Almost ten years? Did you forget 2020 Emma? 😡
I did. Blame COVID 😭
Btw Joe Wright commented in the directors commentary for P&P2005 that Donald Sutherland covers his mouth in his last scene to hide his modern teeth.
Omg I know the scene you're talking about no wayyyy
I love the city of york in the uk but i feel since the Harry Potter stuff took over that people treat it more like a theme park than a real place even though it's like 2000 years old and it's walls alone are older than the founding of America which I feel should demand a little more respect
Yes I love York too but I've been there during very crowded Christmas markets and it is a lotttt 😭
Stupid question here. Did the city of York suffer its reputation in anyway because it could be associated with the Duke of York and his actions?
There is ONE period movie I can think of in recent-ish years: the 2019 Emma. Anya Taylor-Joy certainly has iphone face, but the movie FULLY committed to period clothing and hair, so she actually fit into the story. The tone of the movie has a bit more whimsy then other period movies, but it never felt like it was making fun of period pieces or that the movie hated that it was a period piece like Persuasion did.
I definitely feel like Emma is one of the recent period dramas that really put in the work visually!!
It's worth remembering that fat people have NEVER been synonymous with beauty, this is just fake news from the internet. Having curves and being fat are two different things, in the same way that the appearance of money and the appearance of beauty are also different.
Straight white teeth may reglect the majority of Americans, but not western society. I don't think, anyway! I'm from England and we're known to not waste money on straightening teeth that work fine, but I think this is the case in a lot of Europe, too. Surely a lot of Americans can't afford it either? So it's just wealthier people who have them, isn't it?
EMMA. And it was wonderful!
I have the opportunity to travel easily thanks to my job and this topic is on my mind frequently. My most pivotal moment was on a trip to Egypt, at the national history museum. The mask of Tutankhamun was there in a case, the guards are saying no photos. So of course entire tour groups are crowding the case to get a photo through the glass with their crappy little cell phone cameras. Like we are standing in front of thousands of years of history and all you want a blurry cell phone photo just to prove you were there? It’s so selfish. This is one of the many reasons I deleted insta/fb/tiktok off my phone because I am forcing myself to really look at art and history and absorb it. As we are meant to do. And I feel so much better!
In the particular case of Wuthering Heights, I think the biggest problem isn't the iPhone faces, its that... Nobody had to audition. I dont know of that is *literally* true or not, but the point is, Robie and Elordie feel like somone in a studio office said "We need a male and female lead for a movie! Quick! Sign-on the most poplular actor and actress we can get out hands on!" And as a booklover, it always hurts when Hollywood does that to a story you love, because it sends a message that the filmmakers don't care about telling *this story*, they care about making this lucrative product. It also really "Dates" the movie becasue all through the film people are thinking "Oh hey, its that guy from Euphoria! Must be the 2020's!"
You might be on to something with the not auditioning thing haha
i’ll do you one better: I’m from Charleston, SC. people flock to us for our plantations and other remnants of that disgusting time period, yet they don’t even see it as dark tourism. it’s “a window into a bygone time” but that window has been bleached clean of the blood shed by slaves and soldiers.
Try being from N. Ireland....actors' accents are often appalling or just entirely wrong! Take Titanic, why oh why does Thomas Andrews have a very strong southern Irish accent when he was from Comber, Co. Down?! An area with a strong Ulster Scots heritage.
ohh noo! Are there any good examples of shows that do have more authentic Northern Irish accents?
@regencyrumours the film Belfast was quite good, although most of the actors were from here anyway, Judy Dench did a good job. That being said, Jamie Dornan's accent has morphed into an odd mix of N.I and American. Can't think of any others atm. But I will say that we usually can tell when an English/American person has written the dialogue for N.I characters, our Ulster Scots grammar confuses them 😅
I think I can accept Margot Robbie. I can't accept Jacob Elordie, because I don't think he's talented enough to handle this type of role. He's fine, but the little I've seen of him acting, it was just ok. Also it's very much inferred Heathcliff isn't white, sooooo.....
As a fellow Blue Ridge girlie (Johnson City, TN!) nothing pains me like an actor doing some Gone With the Wind-ass accent when they’re meant to be from Appalachia lol
hahaha yes I know what you're talking about!
My sister and I had planned to go to Salem in November since October there sounds and looks insane. I want to go for the historical aspect and some of my colonial ancestors lived in and around Salem. Some of the tours and events offered made me feel uncomfortable and I kept thinking, people died there! We had to save the trip for next year however and it definitely won’t be in October.
totally unrelated but you kinda look like a young Elisabeth Shue
Awe, I'm flattered!
Oh what sprung to mind when watching this video was Edinburgh, specifically Greyfriars Kirkyard, it's obviously a spooky place and there are multiple ghost and history tours both in the Kirkyard and around the city but also the city has a major Harry Potter thing because of the association with where the books were written, the author used to sit in a cafe nearby Greyfriars and would take names from the stones to use in her books and now there are Harry Potter walking tours, again nothing wrong with this but recently I was taking a stroll around the Graveyard and I heard people screaming Harry Potter spells and I mean like shouting and hollering at the top of their lungs, like come on, this is one a churchyard, a burial site and also a site of mass murder, like it feels disrespectful in a way that the historical tours and ghost tours don't all very off
I think there’s a translation thing going on. Like there are books from the regency era that describe people as beautiful that we will not consider beautiful today. So watching a period drama with someone we consider “beautiful” technically makes us see it as the original audience would have. I’ve seen adaptations of Jane Eyre where they necessarily pick a “plain” looking woman by our standards because that is what we consider “plain” but perhaps people in that time would not.
I grew up on the north shore of MA and I go to school in Salem now!! In elementary school we had a whole unit on the witch trials, and we read a semi-fictional novel about it by a descendant of an accused witch and I got really into the history. I can't think about the witch trials without remembering the months to years that the characters (real people) were locked in prison waiting for trial or execution. My first stop when visiting as a tourist was the witch museum, and I was pretty happy with how seriously it took the tragic history. It was a little outdated bc I don't think the museum has been updated for a couple decades, but the education seemed good based on what I learned in school! However, I think most tourists aren't completely aware of how truly awful the witch trials were as they walk around in witch hats and themed t-shirts. Also, I was surprised by people thinking it's a small town. It's a city, not as big as Boston or Worcester, but definitely not a small town lol. The history being sanitized is definitely a concern, but in my experience, traffic is the biggest problem to locals. There isn't a highway that goes to Salem, so backroads get really backed up. Plus, many of the roads are old and narrow, and people who aren't used to driving in New England might have a hard time. September+October added at least an extra 15 minutes onto my daily commute to school, even when completely avoiding downtown. My main suggestions to tourists would be take the train from Boston or somewhere else, visit the witch museum, and avoid the off-brand Harry Potter shops. There are some legit occult shops bc there are some pagans and satanists in town (side note: google what happened to the satanic temple last spring 👀). Also the summer is the best time to visit for several reasons imo. I love Salem bc it's such a unique place, but unless you are interested in the history, it's probably not worth it. There are a ton of other coastal towns in the area that have less tourism and are equally, if not more, scenic. These are just my insights as a sort-of-local bc I'm there every other day. Great video, I hope more people see this!!!
Thanks so much for watching! Salem sounds lovely in the summer! Thanks for your insight :)
One year, my class went to Salem for a fielf trip (from Maine so it wasn't very far). It was fine?? I peobably would appreciate it more now. But the one thing i remember most, is one of my classmates too a pic with someone dressed as a gorilla and they stole his wallet LOL what a first impression of Salem for 7th graders!
hahaha I do feel like the witch trials are an important thing to learn, but definitely heavy for school kids!
I love your Asheville portrait! I love Asheville and used to go all the time, but it's become so overcrowded. And now almost destroyed 😓 (from upstate SC)
I'm an Asheville native but live in the UK, it's a way of still feeling connected to home!
@@regencyrumours it's such a beautiful place. I actually eloped on top of black balsam knob ❤️
@@probablynargles awe how lovely!! That's got to be a gorgeous place to get wedding pics!
im a salem resident & i am soooooo grateful i live right outside the tourism area so if i need to go to the store i can just go to the town nearest to me. thankfully i never saw or experienced any disrespect but it does annoy me that soooo many people drive into town when theres a train station right there!!!
oh interesting about the train! Traveling to Salem by train sounds fun!
@ its in the perfect location too! its also a lot cheaper to stay in any of the towns on that train line if you want to do multiple days. they also have $10 weekend train passes
I live in Salem and it was an absolute madhouse this year, although the tour guides are saying that people were a lot nicer this year!
This video sounds sorry but like a white lady patting herself on the back for saying the right things.
i was shocked how yellow natural teeth were in europe and the us. we koreans are taught at elementry school to brush our teeth asap after eating always. we would be escorted to the bathroom and watched and timed as in if we were doing the job thoroghly. we were taught not to drink soft drinks or any acidic stuff whilst eating so we can brush our teeth safely afterwards. we were taught to alwats brush asap after eating anything, to discourage snacking as well. as adults we were trained to drink water in between sips of coffee to protect our teeth. as a result koreans rarely get veneers and they are obsessed with looks
In 2021, my parents and I went to Arches National Park in Utah to hike and just be in nature, as we have done since I was a toddler and I’m now 27 years old, we were going to hike on a trail to see the balancing rock, and this guy approached my mom as we were getting ready to hike and asked her to take a picture which was always a normal question so my mom said yes and my dad and I continued getting ready and my mom was gone for like 10 minutes… she returns and tells us that the guy was trying to get her to get a photo of him with his motorcycle and the balancing rock… with no tourists and specific focus
The UK equivalent of Salem MA is Whitby in North Yorkshire because it featured in Bram Stoker's Dracula. On Halloween there's a Goth Weekend, which I do want to go to, but Whitby being a seaside town is also a good place to visit in all other times of the year. There was a news story a couple years ago where tourists complained that they couldn't find Dracula's grave (even though the book has him die back in Transylvania).
I've never been to Whitby, but I keep hearing it's beautiful!
It's really just three things that give IPhone face - big defined eyebrows, contoured cheeks, and big unnatural poofy lips.
AHHHGG!! We get much too many people in Salem now! It used to be manageable a few years ago, but since Covid, it has really ramped up. I am a local, and was a tour guide this season. Most people were nice, but some got short tempered with the long lines that they had to endure. Come to Salem, but don't come in October!!
18:07 yes! Exactly! I often feel frustrated when hearing what Hollywood thinks an Oklahoma accent sounds like 😂
Like, imagine if thousands of people flocked to Wuhan, wearing plague doctor masks and swarming through the hospitals taking selfies with fake dead monkeys. Tragedy tourism is a minefield of bad taste and disrespect and really needs to be handled with care. Interesting video, thanks!
In the 70’s Salem was bankrupt. The fishing industry was dying and there was literally no funds for basic infrastructure. The mayor had the bright idea to capitalize on its history and now the town in thriving and property values skyrocketed. The locals will tell you October may be a bit much and quite a few take a holiday then, however they are very grateful to the tourists. Go in the off season and you’ll see how much they value tourists. As for Cory, the only victim pressed to death, he had previously accused his wife as a way to get rid of her, so not exactly a complete innocent. Salem also has several very respectable tours and museums that address the horrors of the witch trials.
Ah, that's interesting what the mayor did! It's so wild how places become tourist locations!
I don't want to pretend a phony, plastic clown is a real person. Hollywood's inflated, airbrushed, inflated doll aesthetic is not compatible with the craft of acting, which is making me believe you are a character for a bit. This has been bothering me outside the realm of period dramas.
For anyone watching who wants to visit Salem, I LOVE visiting in the summer! It's on the ocean, so there's a lot of maritime history to learn about, alongside the witch trials. And the seafood is excellent (especially when its in season and you don't have to wait three hours for a table)!
Anna Maxwell Martin was a fantastic cast for Esther in the BBC production of Bleak House. Don't know who needs to hear this, but that entire mini-series was fabulous, definitely worth a watch.
Yes! She is such an underrated actress! Loveee her in the Bletchley Circle and Death Comes to Pemberley as well
@@regencyrumours I now got to the issue of Heathcliff's ethnicity, and my interpretation has always been that he would have been of Romani ethnicity. Here is the reasoning: she mentions that it would have been better for him to be a "regular" black, which implies that the type he is would be viewed in a worse light than the "regular". The only minority that would be worse off socially than POC in XIX century Yorkshire is definitely the Romani.
This is why I prefer British shows & movies, people look more "real". However even British TV is getting infected with casting people who look like supermodels. I don't find supermodels to be appealing or attractive to watch personally.
14:25 add southern USA plantations
Absolutely!
@ 🫶🏾✨✊🏾
I was about to mention the Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville FL as an example of such a heritage site as referenced in the video.
@ I have moved saying "slavery" and plantations and suggest the more factual description of "human trafficking victims at forced labor camps who suffered torture, separated families and forbid read under the threat of death. Forced labor and human trafficking makes people think more of the human and not Gone with the wind.
Are people going for the dark history, or are they going for the modern witches and their shops and other businesses? I always thought it was the latter
Try being ABD.... Seriously though, admit to the superiority complex ALL historians revel in when everyone else doesn't realize _______ has happened before, and we not only know this, we can predict all the possible outcomes. Nothing basic about that.
