Experimenting with Mushrooms! Gone right (and wrong...) | Design Struggles and Creative Lessons
This video was such a journey-full of experiments, unexpected failures, and lots of valuable lessons. Join me as I dive into the creative (and sometimes chaotic) process of making pottery mushrooms from start to finish.
From brainstorming designs to shaping, glazing, and everything in between, I’ll share my thoughts on what worked, what didn’t, and how I plan to improve next time. Whether you're here for inspiration, pottery tips, or just some relaxing creative vibes, I hope this video brings you joy and some inspo!
I’d love to know your thoughts and/or predictions on the mushrooms! Your ideas are always welcome.
Thanks for being part of this creative adventure-let’s grow (and laugh) together! 🌱✨
P.S. Watch till the end for a peek at some finished and glazed bonus pieces!

Chatty mcguire over here :) In this video I had some things to throw and A LOT of things to say. From talking about why I like making mushrooms, to my college critiques, and random opinions on ramen bowls - I hope this video kept you company and maybe even helped you be productive. How do you feel about the chat and throw sessions? Any questions for the next ones are welcome! #ceramic #potteryw...

When I first started to upgrade my glazes from pints to large buckets - I had no idea how to mix the powders or what “specific gravity” meant. It was a bit intimidating. It turns out that it's not so complicated. I hope this video can help to show you how simple it can be to relieve some intimidation! If you have any questions or recommendations feel free to put them in the comments! I look thr...

I love getting more lore on why mushrooms :)) I’ve wondered and always meant to ask
Why are you using a brush at some spot i had this question a longtime
I love watching your video you are so humble and sweet
Many mushrooms form cracks in their caps when exposed to the sun. I certainly understand the drive for perfection as we want to see it but especially with the happy accident of the stalk bending/collapsing and the fact that the crack is glazed nicely I actually really love that piece. I hope it doesn't end up in the trashed pile.
Really enjoying seeing you work and your talks. Keep at it ❤
Thank you! Will do!
Thank you! They were all beautiful in their own way! And really enjoined following the process.
Thanks Pam! 💛
Call me delusional but whenever I see cracks or have a dubious project I’m like maybe a hat will make this better? No idea why my mind does this to me but I somehow always convince myself ya know a silly little top hat could totally fix this problem
😂I love it! 🧢🎩👒
Oh my gosh these are amaaaazing!! I love that you work on the handbuilding part in front of a mirror! Brilliant idea. I’ve seen people do that while at the wheel but never handbuilding. I’m so sorry that one was still wet but thankfully it didn’t destroy the other one. I don’t know if you know this but there is a little gadget you can get that is for telling if drywall or plaster is dry and it can be super helpful for making sure the moisture is all out of the clay. Extremely helpful for handbuilding. ❤
💛💛💛
Cool design. Thanks for letting you seeing you work through your art.
👏👏👏
Wow! I love your work but more how you involve us with your creatuons, and how candid you are in not being scared to share your fears or failures. Genuinely happy and glad I subbed. It's inspiring. 🤩
🤗
Oh hey I took photos of some mushrooms back in the summer. I can send you them! 😊 I like your mushroom sculptures, actually mushrooms remind me of jellyfish, the dome part. Also, on some of my pieces I use slip as texture. I use the tip of a paint brush and wallah! Takes a couple coats of slip. That sculpture came out great! FANTASTIC JOB! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sometimes I ask myself, "What would Thor do?" Thor doesn't crumble. Thor smash.
😂
OMG. CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS MUSHROOM! I LOVE THE COLORS ON THE CAP!!!
🍄💛👏
I'm thinking of posting on Fridays...what time is everyone watching?? Would 💛 to know!
Coming from this channel you can post every day that i watch
It’s 10:30pm on Friday here and I’m watching. 😊
For me this video premiered at 12.00 midnight so any two hours earlier would be easier for me
New season of The Great Pottery Throwdown started on Sunday here in UK. 8th season. I have never missed an episode. My favorite show. I would absolutely love to see you on there. You just have to move to UK 😂
That would be so cool!!
@ You’d win hands down. Easy peasy. Preston songs can write new music for the show. You’re both rich and famous and I get two new friends for coming up with the idea 🤣😂
@@hairyhiker4298 😂😂 that’s awesome! We both love you!! We enjoy your comments so much. So you already have two new friends. I actually applied to the great pottery throw down actually! But you have to be a resident of the UK to participate 😥
@@Marlaina_thepotterylady ah that’s sweet of you to say. That’s just made my day!! And I figured you’d have to be a resident 😢
I liked it. Fun watching.
Awesome! 👏

Nothing like a good fungi talk! You are too cute! Enjoyed this format you are probably one of a few that could pull this format off.
Her biceps are insannnneeee 🥰
😅💪💛
I love magic mushrooms. 🤪🤣 and i love them in my soup!
Finally I have found a way to have you as my best friend 😂😂😂
Hahah yess its gunna be a good time 😛
Can’t explain How much I enjoy watching your journey and how you create. The way you explain things is so awesome it makes me really feel like I can actually do this. I have been wanting to do pottery for so so long and now I have a pottery place that is near my home so I’m thinking of starting it that way first and then set up at home. Watching your videos makes it less intimidating. You’re amazing keep it up.😊😊
Amazing! I have a feeling you'll like it 💛
🍯🫕🍲🪴🚰🏺😳
Your so beautiful and all the things you do are so special i am big fan from Greece ❤
Clay therapy. ❤
I like brachiosaurus better…. My question how did you get started as spotter, did you always wanted to be one?
Good morning motivation
Good for you 🫂♻️💖
When I'm quilting most of my yapping is comprised of curse words.
😂
I really loved that vid. And yes, definitely, we're best friends now. What it felt like to me, and the reason i really liked it: it was like being alone with the artist inside her head. If it's authenticity you're looking for, you get pretty close, imo, with something like that. And all your viewers have to do is cuddle up inside your mind with you and go along for that highly enjoyable ride. It's not about "my growth", it's not about "showing my process". Those are topics for other people who are talking about the artist. The making of art can be seen as the resolution of a set of (sometimes uncomfortable) questions or doubts. I saw the vid as the experience of being there while the artist is in conversation with herself, which includes what the artist is making.
Thanks so much for your insight 💛
Love your videos. You remind me so much of a younger Jessica Putnam Phillips. Are you related?
Haha no I am not related and I have actually never heard of her!
totally just edited an entire gallery while listening to this. love hearing you yap!! loved this video. keep up the art!!
Omg I love that so much 🙈🙈
I enjoyed this format very much; I was enjoying the Yap & Throw (LOL) with my Sunday breakfast, and the video style was good fit. I could probably just zen out watching the throwing; but I thoughly enjoyed the yapping, as well! :) Ok, so ramen bowls... my preference would to have a couple of small depressions in the rim where I could set the sticks, but not so deep that they distract from the art. Anyway... looking forward to more of these!
Okay I like that! - good idea, I’ll try some small impressions on the next ramen bowls. I’m glad the format was enjoyable to you! That makes me so happy and I’m excited to do another one 😄
Do you work out or is that just from your craft?
Ignoring the implication that this isn't a work out. I guess I meant to ask if you do isolated muscle building, like weight lifting.
@@tionoasinhaha yes I do! Clay is definitely difficult sometimes and being stronger helps a ton to do certain things. But I also love working out for the mental benefits and general happiness 😄
Stegosaurus... Your thought process is SO MUCH like mine... One thing leads to another, to another.... to another! lol Also, is that a torso behind you in the vid? Looks a lot like a torso/hip area... Love the video. Keep up the amazing work.
Haha stegosaurus are awesome too. Yes that torso is for a gallery with a theme of femininity! I’m excited to glaze it
@@Marlaina_thepotterylady Can't wait to see it if you decide to share. Again, great work, looking forward to the next, and definitely enjoyed the Yap-n-Throw! :) Stay warm over there!
I love me some neverending yap!!! Could you share some tips for aftercare? My hands get drier than Jesus' feet
HAHA 😂 yes that is such a struggle. I have even developed mild eczema because of the dryness
Awesome format!! Please keep it up. You’ve received many good ideas for topics, so something different…maybe some insights into you, and what else you do when you’re not in your studio?! Thanks!
Totally, I’m always up for sharing more about myself! 😊
Delightful all around. thank you. I think you could read us the phone book and we'd enjoy it. For your next Y&T, walk us through your mind & processes when you decided to make the leap from aspiring hobbyist to 'All-In Potter.'
Thanks 🤗😂 Great idea! Added 📝
As a professional yapper I LOVED THIS. I know it’s easier said than done to do all of this but I’d fully watch this for hours!!! Also about the mushrooms I think there is so much beauty in the world around us that we take for granted and don’t appreciate so I love your approach! Too often we go for AND HOW CAN I MAKE THIS FANCY when the wheel doesn’t have to be reinvented
DUDE 😂 professional yapper to another I appreciate you so much and I feel like we could probably talk about mushrooms for forever. I love it!! Thank you❤
You do you and all be well! 😂😉🤔
Talk about what got you into pottery and your improvement from where you started pottery
✅📝
other forms of art other than ceramics that you are interested in and want to give a try.
📝✅ Will do!
I would like to hear from you what your top picks are for items in your studio…regarding shelving you like, tables, storage space, etc, I’m refiguring my own studio, which is currently so small of an area, and would like to expand.
Got it ✅📝
Are you in a basement or garage? This will help me answer this question
@@Marlaina_thepotterylady sorry I missed seeing this…I’m in a basement space, I do have a spare room I can now use, it’s a 9x13foot room
What do you want to talk about in the next Yap & Throw video? Comment below and I'll add it to the list!
I like the idea about your new series next you should talk about the things you love more than mushrooms
Your mushroom is gorgeous and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your entire creative process with us.
Thank you! 💛
😊 from Pakistan 🇵🇰
You made the sorting hat from Harry Potter 😂
