How Cool Can a Volume Pot Be?
I was never a fan of using the volume knob on my guitars as it would always sound so muddy when you turned it down.
After being inspired by Andy Timmons' use of the Keely Super AT Mod with a treble-bleed circuit I thought I'd show how you can make one quickly.

Winding Stratocaster Pickups by hand

If you just want to hear what they sound like go to 6:36 for the comparison. This project was started to create pickups in the same style as the Schecter super-strats of the early 80s. It all stems from a love of Mark Knopfler's tone, especially on the live rendition of Tunnel of Love. #diyguitar #diypickups #guitar #guitarpickups #markknopfler #direstraits

Are Firebird pickups cool? a quick pickup comparison

You don't see many guitars these days with firebird mini-humbuckers, and I had certainly never played one before. So I decided to wind a pair and try them out. So here's a comparison of telecaster style pickups, firebird style pickups, and regular PAF style hum buckers. All three guitars going into the same rig with no changes in between.

    Nice video. Sounds great. I'm convinced now that I don't need to make a pickup winder, I can just use my mini lathe. It has no total revolution counter but it displays rpm, so if I set it at 600rpm and run for 12.5 minutes I should get 7500 give or take a few turns. All I need to make is a guide to limit my sideways movement. I think I can stay awake for 12.5 minutes!

    Beautiful video ! Sorry for the inconvenience but I kindly wanted a clarification from you about the use of the Pedale de Volume with the Plethora X5! Let me explain better I usually use the Volume pedal connect the IN of the Volume pedal in the Send of my Laney header and the OUT of the volume pedal in the ambient effects and finally connecting the OUT of the delay to the Return of the header! This allows me to keep the same paste as the distortion of the preamp at both low and high volumes and control the volume of the effects at the same time! But having the Plethora X5 which also incorporates effects such as the compressor and the noise gate I can't figure out how to do the Volume Pedal connection to get the effect described above! Thank you for your possible answer and I wish you a good day! A hug! Giorgio Zanotti

    • @hotglassbottles
      @hotglassbottles Рік тому

      You can still do exactly the same thing, assuming you will use the Plethora in the effects loop. You will have to decide whether to put it before or after the Plethora. Or....put the volume pedal in the Plethora's loop, which would mean you can move it about in the signal chain as you see fit.

    Are the pickups used mini humbuckers or actual Firebird style design pickups? I like mini humbuckers but they are just smaller versions of the PAF style humbucker; Firebird style pickups are very different: "Mini Humbuckers use a single bar magnet that sits between and below the coils. The magnet physically touches each set of posts and creates an opposite magnetic field in each set. A Firebird pickup uses two “rail” style bar magnets, one of which is placed in the center of each of the bobbins that the coils are wound around. This design does not use steel posts because, the rail magnets are able to pick up the string vibrations. This design leads to a completely different magnetic field than the one produced by mini humbuckers, and it also means that less coil can be wound around each bobbin. Fewer windings lead to a pickup with lower output and brighter tone, which helps Firebird pickups sound much more like “silent” single coil pickups than the Mini Humbuckers do"

    • @hotglassbottles
      @hotglassbottles Рік тому

      Yes, these are the large full width magnets inside the coils as opposed to the mini hum-buckers that have the magnet underneath touching the steel slugs.

      @@nick_be9159 yes, some manufacturers will sell you plastic isolation washers to go with their jacks. Also you could come from the other directions and use a plastic enclosure.

      @@zacharykim295 No that's not normal at all. Are you using electrically isolated sockets, like the plastic Neutriks I used? Each pair of sockets...in to out...should essentially be just like a tiny patch cable. i.e. nothing to do with the one next to it.

      I made them myself! I’ve been building a winding machine to satisfy my need to understand things. SO I’ve wound regular humbuckers and tele pickups. Here’s my video on that ua-cam.com/video/da3B76YiMu4/v-deo.html

    Is this a common issue with the Deville? What causes it or is it just a bad component from the get go?

    • @hotglassbottles
      @hotglassbottles 2 роки тому

      Apparently Fender was sent a batch of these plate resistors and they all had a physical problem that caused them to literally break internally. But they had installed them in many, many amplifiers so it was too late. I don’t think there are official numbers anywhere as to what percentage were bad though. So definitely a bad component from the outset.
