Piper PA24-400 Comanche nose gear doors. This final lengthy video starts at level flight 8,500’. Watch carefully as the speed increases to 173 MPH IAS [230 MPH TAS] the doors open further. And towards the end of the video, when I cycle the cowl flaps, you can clearly see how ugly this situation really is. I suspect all 400s suffer from this condition; possibly the 260C models too. And yes the p...

Piper Comanche 400 landing gear and wheel wells refurbish, refinish, paint.
Переглядів 6 тис.10 років тому
This sequence is a synapse of the wheel well refinish and all removed components on my 400 Comanche. As I recall it took about 31 days and many late nights to complete. I've done this to 2 Comanches; it is a huge job. Don't try this unless you are adventurous and willing to be punished! My guesstimate if you asked a pro to tackle this; twenty-thousand AMU's [ask Kristin what is an "AMU"].
PIPER COMANCHE LANDING GEAR MICRO SWITCH ADJUSTMENT
Переглядів 4,5 тис.10 років тому
Here is an as-received upper and lower drag link assembly [main gear from twin] with the down-lock micro switch. The purpose is to illustrate the premature switching adjustment that was performed; this can lead to a gear collapse because the landing gear transmission will switch to the off position prior to the over-center secure position.
Piper Comanche, repair of damaged side brace support
Переглядів 1,3 тис.10 років тому
Damage to the side brace support will occur if/when the gear is dropped from the retracted position without restraint while on jacks. The damage is a bent side brace stud, and displacement of the bushing bore. I have seen 0.015" displacement. The only cure is serviceable components or make yours serviceable.
Piper Comanche land gear side brace support
Переглядів 1,8 тис.10 років тому
The side brace supports and/or components are subject to 2 airworthiness directives, AD 77.13.21 part A [the infamous 1000-hour AD] and AD 91.01.01 R1 the side brace stud. This slide show illustrates some of the processes involved in properly tackling this job. It is important to note that any press-fit steel bushing in aluminum will benefit by heating the assembly prior to removing the old bus...

    One other thing while flying with Dad if you pull the gear up and leave the throttle slam forward and approach red line at the end of the runway that 3000 ft a minute it doesn't last long but it's pretty cool

    Love the sound of that three bladed hartzel prop. Reminds me of when an old Air raid sirens first gets going.

    You must have a replaced or updated starter. Any ideas on which model you have? Your starter sounds completely different than the original.

    Great job. Most Comanches gear wells are poorly stripped & not prepped good when they paint the plane. Especially behind the main wheel well covers. Looks like you made new ones there usually cracked & patched up.

    Does it normally drain more going up than down? I had my circuit brake snap on my while retracting after take off. My mechanic will see it next week. But I'm trying to educate myself on the proper voltage

      3 ideas come to mind: Smaller round cowl inlets; maybe 25% smaller inlet area. Additional fairing forward of the doors and reshaping the doors’ exterior to conform with the additional fairing; an idea suggested by Hans. Attach airfoils to the “inside” of the doors using the airflow to raise them.

    • @mvvish
      @mvvish 9 років тому

      Matt Kurke I think a small fairing just in front of the leading edge of the gear doors would be sufficient to stop this!

    reno racers fall under the same prop criteria. High engine rpms either turn shorter props or gear reduction.

  • @4lifeifly
    @4lifeifly 12 років тому

    Some of the Reno racing sport class racers run about 3000rpm and you don't see props being destroyed on them. So yes, a prop can spin at over Mach 1

    U guys should check your facts. Comanches were one of the best GA planes around. A 400 Comanche will outrun and out climb a bonanza. The reason they stopped manufacturing them was the piper plant Was completely flooded and destroyed.

    One other important thing to remember concerning engine rpm's is propeller speed. Aircraft engines were purposely designed to turn at lower rpm's with plenty of horsepower. (look at the massive radials) Pushing the engine beyond 2400 rpm's forces the propeller tips to go supersonic increasing drag and NOISE! This is why many seaplanes are louder. (bigger prop diameters) Fats turning engines have been used ( i.e. rotax) but they then require gear reductions to slow down the prop! More complexity.
