What this gentleman missed about Buddhism never said kill all desires. It states seek a mid path. Give up bad thoughts, deeds and desires. Earn with good work. Speak truth ;not harsh words. Kindness and compassion. Loving kindness. Most importantly gratitude and respect for nature. Bhagavat Gita teaches that ultimately all god great and small will end up in the universe “god”. That “god” has no beginning or ending. It is the time that brings changes to everything and end to everything. Jesus taught very similar philosophy. He never taught to kill or force people to follow his orders. He never even had a religion. Rest of the “christian” history you know well. Flollow Jesus teachings.

You are not called upon to abandon all desires. This is a huge misunderstanding. You are called upon to desire the wise, the good, and the beneficial. Once you have acquired these, there can be no more question of desire. One only desires those things which one does not possess. Your desire is therefore extinguished upon acquisition. When you desire that which is wise, there can be no more craving because the desired object is achieved.

@@ManashantiiTheChristian I am sorry, but “going to retreats” does not make you a Buddhist. Did you study any Pali? Which Theravada school? Did you take your five or eight precepts? What lineage? And did you abandon the Theravada for the Mahayana or vice versa? And why? You sound very confused. And going on retreats? Is this a holiday? Meditation is what you do AFTER you have mastered your precepts. It is not something that is engaged in at the beginning. This sounds like western woo, not Buddhism. I am delighted your Jesus rescued you from it. And I am doubly delighted you did not “become a nun”. And again “New Age” is not Buddhism. It sounds like a western thing like Scientology or Mormonism. Moreover, you say you were Christian for 19 years, then, 26 years. Then you say you were “New Age” for four years. Then you say you were Buddhist for 23 years. It is all very vague and confusing. This means you must either be extremely old, or that you began your Buddhist journey when you were a child. Forgive me, but I find your story very hard to believe. Look to your SECOND precept. Desire for that which is virtuous and good is encouraged. Desire for that which is destructive is considered a hindrance to your progress. @@sweetnerevar7030 Gods, THE God, whatever gods are relevant to you (I am not sure which) may very well exist. They may even provide you with this salvation you seek if you abide by the god’s principles, rules, precepts or dogmas. However, the Buddha did not offer you salvation. He did not offer you this “eternal life” you so hanker for. He states that eternal life is already your natural state. You cannot die. The body can die, the self (or brain construct) of the body can die, sure. You are by nature immortal. Buddhism deals with what you DO with your immortality. That is all. If you wish to believe in your particular god, go right ahead. If you do not, equally fine. But no god can absolve you from the repercussions of your actions. Responsibility cannot be shirked. You can be forgiven, sure, but responsibility? No. The consequences of your actions are yours alone to face. That is why, even when you call to your particular god, the invariable response is silence. Gods can provide solace, forgiveness, comfort… but they cannot shoulder your kamma. That is the opposite of justice. Absolution does not mean freedom from responsibility. Also, there is no point to the question “Who designed the moral code?” It is the way existence is. We call it Dhamma, you call it God’s Law. We just choose not to select a god from the VAST array on which we may blame Dhamma. You do. And that is fine. For us it is perfectly fine to say: “Dhamma is.” It is good enough for us that the Good exists. Finally, how do I know Buddhism to be a very true and virtuous path that is far superior to other paths?: you can evaluate the veracity of a doctrine by the way its clerics, its adherents, and its lay people treat each other and how they behave toward others, and the “other” in society, that is, the most hated and marginalized. You cannot judge a religion purely by its scriptures (they will always be flawed, contradictory, and filled with anachronisms). I shall leave it there.

Bishop seems to have some understanding of Buddhism, which is wonderful and open-minded. However, I think the conversation can go further because what he said is not accurate. "The point of demarcation he mentions does not seem correct to me, I am not an expert but I have studied Buddhism for many years. Buddhists encourage people to keep the religion in which they were born (Catholicism, Islam, etc.) because converting could cause confusion. For the same reason, although Buddhists are open to interfaith conversation on common themes such as love, compassion, generosity, etc., there are certain Buddhist concepts that some teachers prefer not to discuss with non-Buddhists to avoid the risk of them developing confusion or even doubt in their own faith. Having said that, it may be better not to go any further in the conversation. Perhaps it is better just to focus on cultivating values and qualities that benefit oneself and others, whatever our & their beliefs and faiths.

He doesn’t understand what Buddhists mean by nirvana or desire. Nirvana more closely translates to breathe out or let go, not blow out. And desire to Buddhists is a clenching on to impermanent objects (people, items, things, places, experiences, etc) not so much an aspiration or duty. Otherwise why would the Buddha have taught for 50 years? Why even do anything if desire of any kind is the problem? How even do anything without a desire to do something? Buddhism translates horribly to English and western views on it are so flawed we’re seeing contrast where there is none. Buddhism and Christianity point to the same place, they just take different paths. It’s obvious when you actually listen to the gospels. “Know them by their fruits”. Buddhism has only produced goodness and peace. In fact it’s the only major world religion without major scandals and issues. Pretty clear what they’re doing achieves salvation and walking a righteous path.

Buddhism never (at least from the teachings that I've learned) claimed that feeling desire is bad and that you should destroy that feeling. It claims that every desire can lead to suffering if you're not able to let go of the desire. It merely teaches that clinging on to a desire will inevitably lead to suffering. For example a lot of Christians have this immense desire that their god is indeed real. But imagine if somehow this was proven wrong then they will have an immense suffering because this one very important desire of them can't be fulfilled. I'm not trying to prove that God does or does not exists, but I'm just trying to give an example where a Christian can maybe relate to, in order to explain what I'm trying to say. I'm also not saying that desiring the existence of a god is wrong but you can see where this can lead to... Buddhism teaches you in this scenario that you have to be able to let go of this desire if it ends up not being able to be fulfilled or else unnecessary suffering will be the consequence.

You got it all wrong. Buddhism does not day to ignore you desires but to embrace them. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

It's avoiding the entire issue to begin with. Buddhism talks of extinguishing the entirety of the things that prevents you from achieving eternal bliss, christianity says to do thay but to make an exception to inflate the ego of the god of christianity and his son/alter ego jesus christ and the holy spirit it doesn't confront the problem at it's core it just makes a half assed exception. Don't get me wrong buddhism has a huge flaw too because the Shakyamuni Buddha says extremes of any kind are bad but then instructs people to goto extremes to achieve nirvana. In short the buddhist route is better but still not as developed as it could be, I'm not convinced the answer is purist practice in the religion.

Nirvanah is imppssible. No one is self sufficient. No one is able to have any happiness, nor peace, nor joy without desire. For such are the ways of devils: for they come not but to steal, kill and destroy. Beware of this doctrine: it will be your eternal suffering if you die believing that good desires are the enemy. Desires that are destructive in nature come from ego. Not desires which are good and used for edifying and building up and encouraging. Any desire that is pure and unselfish with all goodness does not come from ego. Rather, it comes from humility. But the buddhists have no desires good or evil. They strive to remain as neutral as possible, killing any desire in them. To be truly neutral, wavering between good and evil, is to care not what one loses, nor to care if one suffers. Budhism strives to be neutral to thendetriment of justice and peace. They don't understand that without taling a side they remain indifferent. They think that even good desires come from ego. This is not true, for any good desire for the use of healing and edifying comes from humility. They think that by destroying aby desire in them, that they will become humble. But without desire, humility cannot be desired. Albert Einstein said "To remain silent and indifferent is the greatest sin of all." For one who has become one with the universe, has conformed to its' very nature: a nature of pitiless indifference. Repent and trust in Jesus Christ. The graves of all budhists and Buddha are filled; the tomb of Jesus Christ is empty. For He rose from the dead, just as He said He would. You have the scriptures and the prophets who testify of hell, and that God is good and just. However, if you don't believe them, you will not believe though one rise from the dead to warn you of hell. It has already happened, and yet unbelievers everywhere continue to prove the words of Jesus Christ; the King of Righteousness.

Buddhists don't understand that without desire for anything, aspiration cannot exist. To not desire anything is to not desire good nor evil, and thus is becoming of one like the universe; being a person of PITTILESS. INDIFFERENCE. And where apathy of all things is, death and destruction are sure to follow. For thus is the doctrine of devils.

  • @AndrewYouTubehandle

That’s not correct. Buddhism doesn’t seek to put out desire. The obvious example being the desire for enlightenment! The desire to develop loving kindness, equanimity, compassion and happiness in the joy of others. Buddhism seeks to reduce and remove grasping & neurotic craving (ie craving things that cannot lead to happiness etc. for example addicted to watching UA-cam videos!); also to reduce and remove pushing away/aversion/hatred; and to develop wisdom rather than ignorance.

If I further trained already trained agent this will safe me a lot of time. I read the matlab documentation and matlab experts comments on this issue but in my case the issue wasn't resolved. AgentOptions.SaveExperienceBufferWithAgent = true this line provided in matlab documentation doesn't help.

The 4 noble truth adress Tanha as the source of Dukkha (Suffering, Stress, Dis-ease, Disatisfaction). But Desire is not a 100 percent accurate translation of Tanha i feel. Tanha is a kind of craving, unquenchable thrist, a (errant) desire. Sometimes symbolized as Fire, since fire burns on the more fuel you add to it. Never satisfied. Thats why Nirvanna is symbolized as the blowing out of a lid candle. This is the kind if Desire, Buddhist practice aims to adress. There is a kind of a noble kind of desire. And as such i think Bishop Baron just confirmed that there is indeed common ground between Christianity and Buddhism.

I admire and love the dear Bishop, but I want to highlight the part of his response that he did not elaborate on. I accept your definition of Tanha and contrast that with how Jesus defines love. Jesus teaches us that love is defined as the intense attachment for the benefit of our friends over ourselves. The intensity so high, that one would be able to lay down their very own life, against a 'human' sense for self-preservation. John 15:12-13 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 *Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.*

@@alisterrebelo9013In Buddhism, there is no “self”. So, for whom are you laying down “your” life, and who is doing the laying down? In Buddhism all life is precious, including “yours”. And let us not forget that the same man who called laying down your life to be a great good, also said that we should hate our own lives, and hate family, father, mother, and children. In other words, lay down your life first for god and NOT your friends. These kinds of contradictions are what make your scriptures, for me, untenable.
