Many accusations of "cowardice" are unjustly laid at the door of the French in WWII (IMHO). But since Britain was never occupied, it is a relatively easy - and ignorant - thing to point the accusing finger at the French. However, the publication of "Dominion" by CJ Sansom in 2013 gives a frightening - and embarrassing - picture of Britain under a supposed Nazi occupation post 1940. What we find is collaboration and betrayal at both the higherst and lowest levels - just like in France, with a replica Vichy government headed by Lord Beaverbrook, a resurrection of the Auxiliaries who earned infamy in Ireland in 1920 as a British "milice", and small but determined groups of resistants who eventually prevail. A resistant in France, if caught, was more often that not brutally tortured before being garrotted, guillotined or shot. The Geneva Convention did not apply to these heroes. And they were taking on impossible odds, which they were well aware of. Of course they could have collaborated or kept their heads down, as most did, or even get used to living in a Nazi-occupied Europe. But they didn't. So please let's hear no more crap about the French running away during WWII. Men like Jean Moulin deserve never to be forgotten.

The image of the tape reader from input to the Colossus computer is an anachronism. The Colossus was not used to break Enigma code. It was used to crack Lorenz encoded teletypewriter transmissions. Morse code scrambled and unscrambled by an Enigma machine was cracked using devices called Bombes...as depicted in the popular movie Imitation Game.

My grandpa was a Bren Gunner in the Canadian Scottish and landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. In the early 2000s he told me about a battle he was in where he counted 18 Canadian tanks taken out by the Germans. It took me a little while to figure out it was Operation Tractable and to find the location. In 2008 (when I was the same age he would've been in '44) I made the trip to Normandy. And with the help of some info I picked up at the Juno Beach Centre I was able to put myself in the area of this battle. It's nice to see I was in the right spot. He told me the Canadians were advancing on a German tank. It fired a round and he said a group of Canadians dropped where it impacted. Then it fired a second shot a bit closer to his position and more Canadians went down. The 3rd shot he said he didn't see, he was just instantly on the ground. He got up, found his Bren gun, bent down to pick it up but couldn't because the tendons in his right arm were severed by 88 shrapnel. That was the end of the war for him.

In the photograph at 16:25, Captain Roberts in seated in the middle, the brilliant 21-year-old chartered accountant (CPA in US) Jean Laidlaw is seated on his right, 18-year-old bridge player Janet Okell is standing behind Robert's left shoulder, and future Vogue magazine super model 19-year-old June Duncan is standing second from the left in the back row. It's generally accepted nowadays, after declassification of WATU documents, that Wren Laidlaw was the one who deduced how the U-boats were getting inside the convoys, and who then developed the Raspberry tactic with it's resultant devastating effect on Donitz' fleet. It's very sad that none of the Wrens of WATU were ever recognized by the Admiralty for their work, similar to how the WASPs were not recognized for their US war efforts. But such was the thinking towards wormen's roles in the 1940s and 1950s.

A good Commander has to be a flexible commander. A Commander should be aware that plans don't always go to plan. That the enemy have their own plans and will be happy to interfere. DDAY certainly proved that with the fighting on the landings beaches, with the parachutists.
