New Grips for a Charter Arms Bulldog DAO
I decided that the Charter Arms Bulldog I recently picked up need a better set of grips due to the way the gun is designed. The open backstrap with the sharp edges is simply uncomfortable. Therefore, I picked up a Hogue Monogrip and decided to make a quick video about it. No, I have not made a review video with this gun as of this initial posting, but one is coming soon. Please excuse my crazy lab mix barking in the background.

These are cool. & agree the P17 is a fun one too. But seeing stuff like this makes me want to skipp them & buy a old S& W trade in. (Apples & oranges regardless of $ ,I know. )Older the better. Saw some nice ones from the 70-80s not too long ago for around 300 .wouldn’t have mattered if they were $99.99.9999 at the time.budget has been too lean to think about wants lately. Like guns, like bullets but Like& need food .+ it’s election time. Generally stop shopping for a while every 4 years. just came across the first polymer ones of these recently online. Have 365xl & it looks something like one with some CZ + a grip safety ,now this metal one. & Yes,a gen 2 & 3 ect will come like the 2000s. Like to know exactly what the “patents“ are specifically. They will expire soon enough. Anyhow, have fun..but these ned to be built with good stuff to be good. Def not getting $500 worth out of this if that’s even what the cost. Sub & like. They add up & get Enough & free bullets & stuff eventually .free is good. Ps. Could go the rest of my life without seeing a mandatory optic cut being added on every single gun .rather go back to sending slides off IF you wanted to. Get it done where & how you want. PSs. Good holsters & belts don’t care about 2-3 pounds of steel. I know where some 1911s from 1911 are.where is that thing going to be in 113 years?its a shame to waste good ideas.
If you drive it out on the right side, you drive it in from the right side. This can't be your first time.
I bought the Security-380 hoping for it to be a replacement for my S&W Shield 380 EZ because it holds twice the number of rounds, however I have not been won over by its reliability. I have about 1200 rounds through it and have replaced the firing pin and spring, the recoil spring, and the hammer spring and that fixed my light strike problems but I still am getting some failures to go into battery and some occasional FTE's. I've had hand surgery and have arthritis in both hands so a pistol that's easy to rack and doesn't punish my hands is what I need. I think you are right about them using the 9mm mag from the Security 9 and then putting in that funky short follower with the gap in it and that may be why mine hasn't been as reliable as it should be. Maybe I have been spoiled by the Smith as it always works 100% of the time no matter what kind of ammo I toss in it, but then I'd rather have an 8 shot gun that will always work than a 15 round one that may or may not always work. Sure wish that someone like Mec-Gar would come out with some mags for this gun as they always make excellent mags that you can depend on working every time, and supply the factory mags for a number of reliable name brand guns. Really wanted to love this gun but am quite disappointed with its overall performance, definitely wouldn't rely on it for a carry gun. Unlike a fine wine, we generally don't get better with age.
@@wilycoyote9091 That is something that I have noticed with Ruger Semi-autos lately. They seem to be hit or miss. I have had quite a few issues with the LCP II and LCP Max, but some people say their guns work flawlessly. My Security 380 has been great, but you have had issues. Maybe that is to expected at this price point, but I would think a reputable company like Ruger to be better.
@@Preacher357 My old Ruger P89 is built like a tank and has thousands of trouble free rounds through it, and as they say they don't build them the way they used to. The mags for the 380 has a spacer spine in it to take up the room that used to fit 9mm rounds in it. Not only does this appear to be mickey mouse engineering, I think that's where a lot of folk's problems stem from. There is also a balance there with the spring rates to get a lite rack system to work well, and perhaps they should have copied how S&W has mastered that balance with their EZ series and now with their 9mm Equalizer. The hit or miss thing really sucks when you're on the wrong end of it. Even though I have had problems with a couple of Taurus G2c's I recently got a Taurus TX22 Compact and am extremely impressed with how well it works, especially for a 22 LR semi-auto. That's a $250 gun that's less than the Security-380 that outperforms the Ruger by a long shot from a company who has not had the best of reputations. Maybe I just got lucky and got a good one, and maybe was unlucky with the Ruger though I too have heard a lot of folks complain about their LCP's and the LCP Max - good design and idea just not the best execution.
@@wilycoyote9091 I have reviewed the Taurus guns also. I have been fairly impressed with all of them I have reviewed.
If I used a vortex crossfire 3-9x32 and CCI stingers with this rifle would it be good for coyotes?
@@AzHuntandHook Honestly, I don't consider 22lr to be an effective enough cartridge for coyote. Therefore, this gun would not be my choice. I would at least want a rifle chambered in 22WMR.

Wow that’s more than the Ruger even costs!!!! But glad you did it so we don’t have to n thank ya much for the advice and good information!!!!
Believe it may be the magazine disconnect. It's keeping it from engaging.
I have Hogue Monogrips on my Taurus 856 +P Defender three inch snub nose and even though the grips are comfortable these particular Monogrips have an open backstrap unlike those you have. Why these don't completely cover the backstrap like those you have I don't know. I would prefer complete cover. These came with the revolver and I don't want to switch to the small Taurus rubber grips that give complete cover and came extra because I don't get a full grip. If I don't get a full grip then I don't have good recoil control regardless of concealability. I will just stick with these unless they become uncomfortable with +P ammo or heavy for caliber. Thanks for sharing.
Good evening, this bulldog is using anabolic steroids, hahaha, magnificent revolver, congratulations and thanks for the video. A hug from Brazil 🇧🇷
Charter arms does not make a quality revolver.
Do you own most of the guns you reviewed ?
@@iTheEncounter The majority of them. There are a few that I borrowed from friends and family. The rest of them I purchased on my own. I haven't kept all of them though. Many of them I traded back in to get other guns. This rifle I actually donated to the Tennessee Firearms Association annual meeting auction.
The bodyguard 2.0 does have a version with a thumb safety. Just like the shield they offer versions with or without a thumb safety (unlike Glock) Personally I prefer a thumb safety for a striker fired handgun or any gun without an external hammer. My first choice for larger guns are sa/da guns with an external hammer that I can cover the hammer when I draw from appendix cc but pocket carry guns generally are better without an external hammer that might snag so I prefer a safety version that I can train with so taking off the safety when drawing becomes muscle memory
I would like to see someone do a test of the S&W SD40 2.0
Just recently bought a mag pug 3".. Tooo much recoil. Shooting +p for carry. Its definetly on the light side. It would be a liability for me to carry full load 357...5 yds an under ...lol I need more time out with it for 357 loads for CC.
what is the typical trigger pull weight on this revolver ?
@@iTheEncounter I've never tested it. It isn't a hair trigger, but it is not bad either. I would guess it is probably around 5 pounds.
@@Preacher357 would you recommend this revolver ?
@@iTheEncounter Yes. I have nothing but good to say about my experience with it.
@@iTheEncounter Don't get me wrong, there are definitely going to be nicer SAA clones out there, but not for the price of this one.
I bought one of those when they first came out. Mine came with two magazines. Yes, it does take 10/22 mags, BUT, the 10 rounders are tough inserting and removing them. No problems with 15 and 25 round mags. And unfortunately, the rear sight flew off while I was shooting it earlier this year. And it appears that the set screw was stripped, so I had to put an optic on mine, which is exactly what I DIDN"T want to do. But it does break down easier for cleaning than the 10/22. Good luck with yours.
Yes, I absolutely carry my 30sc Shield Plus. I even own the 9mm Shield Plus and I carry the 30sc version instead because it recoils less and the 30sc HST rounds are just as effective as 9mm HST rounds. If you buy the 9mm Magguts +2 or +3 extensions and use them in your 30sc magazines, you increase the 13rd mag to 17rds and the 16rd mag to 19rds. With 19+1 rounds of HST, you're not losing anything with ballistics by carrying a 30sc. There's more of a difference between 40, 45 and 9m than there is between 9mm and 30sc. Ballistically, there's not much difference between 30sc, 9mm, 40, and 45, so capacity is always king when the ballistics are the same.
@@copper178 I have started carrying the 30SC Shield plus. It carries well. I don't know yet if it will replace my Sig P365, but I like it fairly well. My biggest concern is the longterm availability and cost of ammo for practice.
@@Preacher357 The 365's I have and carry have always been excellent shooters for me. They are even better now with the new Radian ramjet i placed on it. I carry the Macro grip module with a 365X slide and the radian ramjet. Shoots really flat with the ramjet and it's a stock 17+1 capacity gun, so the only thing I have with more capacity in a smaller package is my 19+1 Shield Plus 30sc with a +2 magguts extension on the 16rd magazine. Those 2 guns are the only ones I've been carrying lately.
Rip Paul we lost a great man a veteran and a 2a advocate
How the recoil compared to 9mm is it more snappy or not
@@robertwess4556 I wouldn't say it has more recoil. I think it is just different. There is a lot of initial flash and bang (the round is very loud), but the felt recoil is about the same. It is a small gun so both rounds are somewhat snappy in this platform.
When I shoot my 9mm and 30sc Shield Pluses back to back with HST rounds in both, it's OBVIOUS to me that the 30sc has less recoil. People confuse flash and bang with recoil and it's not the same. A 5.7 has flash and is loud as hell, but it has little recoil. 30sc has less recoil than 9mm because it's what the engineers at Federal measured and they do the math and physics that's necessary to prove recoil differences.
@@copper178 With the 100 grain ammo, I would bet that is the case. With the 115, I am not sure. If the weights and velocities are basically the same, then mathematically the recoil should be as well. I really couldn't tell much difference though. I am also not very recoil sensitive, so I am not always the best at determining how much recoil I am getting.
@@Preacher357 Watching you shoot it on this video, it doesn't look like it's recoiling very much at all. You would notice less recoil if you shot the 9 and 30sc HST's back to back. As you stated, the 30sc 100gr HST and 124gr 9mm HST probably makes the difference because of weight, but I'm no engineer or physics expert either.
What about RUST , hundreds if not thousands of these Ruger LCP Max have slide rust issues. I love Ruger and plan on buying several more Rugers , but the rust problems are total bull 💩. Yes call Ruger they will send you a new slide , but half the guys said the new slide rusted also .
@@RonSaywer as of the filming of this video I had not had any problems with that. Just recently, though, I found some on my slide. The finish on these guns is definitely subpar.

I'm not knocking your experience with the gun as apparently it differs ,but I own it and owned the original SD9ve and there is a vast improvement in the triggers and it sits at about 5 on mines ,and shoots fairly accurate with no adjustments. I'm not sure why yours is getting a 9 on the trigger, especially when the whole focus was to improve that issue by smith! I also reviewed a bunch of videos on this before I purchased it, as well as even now that I've owned it and very few others had a malfunctioning trigger issue but not many and all seem to think it shoots decent . I myself have put about 1500k down range, and the only issue has been that it does not like Norma Ammo and locks up every time I tried .Appreciate the video and your experience.
@@melvinbanks7375 As I told another commenter, I may have to pick up another one and try it again. I must have just gotten a bad one.
Another handgun I’ve been wondering about. Thanks!
Good review 👍🏼 S&w shield is a fine gun , but I’m not sure what niche a 30 SC fits or what problem it solves better than the offerings in a 9mm from Canik or Glock.
Only if I had nothing better to choose from.
thanks for the content. Getting my wife this gun for her 1st real pistol.( 22 LR is not real LOL).
What a foolish statement. Care to be the recipient of a 22LR?
Smith and Wesson Shield Plus in 30 Super Carry: Yay or Nay? Nay. .30 Super Carry falls between 9mm and .380ACP. Kind of like .40Smith between .45ACP and 9mm. Both of these calibers don't have the variety of ammo or availability of those they compete against. Nor do they have the popularity and in the case of 9mm, it is a NATO round fully supported by the military that the others don't have. .30 Super Carry barely reaches 9mm velocities and if anything is a better round than .380ACP which it does better at competing against than 9mm.
I will take a 327 over the 30 super carry I can shoot 327,32 H&R ,32 long and 32 short out of my lcr ruger if not I will carry my 9mm or 380 for deep concealment but whatever floats your boat thanks for the video though stay safe
30 Super Cary will be a nay for me. 9mm works just fine. 9mm is a proven and cost friendly round.
I own a Shield in 30 SC, carry it often, and I really like it. The Shield is a great platform and the SC has great short barrel ballistics and moderate recoil. Avidity Arms recently released their PD10 in 30 SC. Hopefully we will see more handguns in this chambering soon!
After finally getting a 380 for a more summer shorts and t-shirt carry weapon, I'm not sure a new caliber in a platform that is roughly the same size as my 9mm or 45 Shield's that are my EDC is going to be for me.
You really illustrated the trigger difference!! Better than many other reviews I’ve seen!!!
I bought the 7mm Magnum synthetic version in 1984. I love that rifle!
I like the video, great comparison. But you should watch a few videos on how to use your calipers. At about 13 minutes, you stated the the calipers wouldn’t open far enough to measure the slide. Thats what the other end of the calipers are for.
@@NWeagle888 Yes. That is true. I knew that, but probably just didn't even think about it at the time. Honestly, I don't even remember measuring them. I have slept too many times since then.
@@Preacher357 lol good answer, good answer. Seriously good video. I’m in the middle of trying to decide which one of these to purchase. It will become my concealed EDC. As much as I love my Mossberg MC2C, it has well over 2000 rounds through it. The internet seems to be split down the middle on these.

@@Hardy_boy1 I wouldn't want a hair trigger on any carry gun. That is strictly for competition pistols. However, this trigger was coming in I believe around 9 lbs, which is a bit much for a striker fired gun.
Good video. Thank you for making it.
How you like the LCP II 380? I have one and had problems with mag drop when shooting, but fixed it. Mine, even with totally fixed sights is pretty dang accurate. Did you have the same problem with the LCP II mag dropping sometimes when firing?
@@romeowalk8104 Yes. I have a video up on that I believe. I had the same issue with the LCP Max. Ruger is not putting strong enough mag latch springs in the guns. I ordered an aftermarket latch spring from MCarbo for the LCP II and had Ruger send me a new one for the MAX. I like the LCP II for its extremely small size. I can pocket carry it when I can't other guns. It isn't much fun at the range to me because the trigger pinches the snot out of my finger, but it still shoots pretty well. The pinching doesn't cause enough of a problem to keep me from carrying it, but if I shoot more than a box of ammo at a time I tend to end up with a blister on the side of my trigger finger.
@@Preacher357 I think MCarbo is where I ordered my mag latch spring from for LCP II 380 -sorry, it's been a few years now since so aren't entirely sure. But yeah, the regular LCP ll (I haven' shot the max yet) isn't the most fun gun to shoot, but I do love the size, and most things other than the small size and hard to shoot.. but it is after all a small, easy to carry defense gun, and it fits that purpose pretty good. I've watch several of your videos now, and I enjoy your presentation of them. You only tell what your view of the gun is, without coming off as a know it all. Keep up the good work, man.
@@romeowalk8104 Thank you. I really appreciate the positive feedback.
On the barrel shroud.. If you unloosen the hex screw below, and drive the alignment pin out the entire shroud comes off.
Blame it on the meat hands.
