    Some day, maybe in the far future, man will reach other planets. Those planets will have a vast abundance of a lack of roads. Wheeled and even tracked vehicles require nice smooth flat terrain. However on a planet with a thin atmosphere, where there is no wind or rain to smooth out the bumps, legs will be the ONLY effective form of locomotion. Mechs are inevitable, if we ever get off this rock.

    A mech would be objectively more terrifying than a tank. A tank can't run around and stomp at you like a T-Rex. Nor can it get back up if a blast knocks it on it's side. We don't need hundreds of tanks and fighter jets. A F###ing battle mech, would most certainly be resources well invested.

    I think there’s merit to the psychological underpinnings of the fantasy…..but the “mechs are over complicated tanks” angle I think is too simplistic. Mechs as portrayed in mechwarrior are absolutely, due to the limits of gameplay and engines, over complicated tank simulators. As portrayed in Battletech as a franchise or other franchises like titanfall, their appendages make them able to operate in terrain tanks can’t. (Forests, jungles, swamps, off road in mountains, potentially they could do better in dense urban terrain). Really They’re an alternative to armored fighting vehicles whose superiority or inferiority alternates based on the terrain they’re in. Battletech doesn’t always get that right with its rule of cool designs, and doesn’t give tanks it’s due. But I will get a whole ass Fucking mechanical engineering phd to prove your shit wrong. We all know in real life “battlemechs” look or would look more like the armored walkers in James Cameron than anything in our fiction. That’s Ok

  • @dragonturtle2703
    @dragonturtle2703 День тому

    Mechs do have some advantages: legs are better with some terrain, and it’s easier for a single human to operate a humanoid mech than both drive and operate the turret of a tank. Though, that does require one have the technology and industry that the added complexity of a mech is worth it, but we’ve seen the same with mechanized/airborne infantry, so good chance of it. Besides, if we were to be realistic about future warfare, it would probably all be small and fast drones dog fighting each other (well, more like moving article while turreted weapons try to shoot the other) and inter working long range guided missiles from enemy drone carriers going to theirs, with humans nowhere in the equation except in the command bunker and research labs, watching the AI do its thing. While it isn’t completely uninteresting, it is less so, and far more limiting. Especially since such wars are likely to be decided in the opening battles baring travel time. And it’s not like our conceptions of modern or ancient war, or life in general outside our own personal experience, isn’t already made more glorious/exciting/interesting/etc in fiction to the point of being inaccurate.

  • @oompalumpus699

    The funny thing is, the way anti-mech people feel right now about mechs is no different from how people in the military back then felt about tanks and planes. When the tank was first introduced, the first complaint from the brass was why attach a gun to an engine when you can just have soldiers push the gun around and do the same thing. When the airplane was introduced, navy brass refused to believe that air power would dominate. They believed that battleships were the only thing a true navy needed. We want to materialize the fantastical because it is in our nature to innovate. If humanity never had the instinct to innovate, then we would have never discovered fire and would have stayed as scared apes in a cave.

    there is only one way for mechs to be possible: artificial muscle. cause muscles move back and forth efficiently (as they are selectively elastic), but can't spin. electric motors can spin well, but lack the elasticity to move energy efficient back and forth. ( pneumatics are to jerky and hydraulics to heavy). the use case would not be tank replacement, but infantry support in areas to cluttered for wheeled or tracked platforms. in cases where presence is constantly needed so a mech standing around is better than calling in a helicopter. a mech is mot a walking tank, but the bridge between ifv and helicopter. cost- benefit is another topic though. in decent terrain, tracks and wheels are better. for in and out stuff, a helicopter would likely be cheaper as well. so a mech is niche in any case.

    if we are talking a HARD scifi with mechs in it and not just power armor. then i would expect the mechs to be used in an environment that we haven't needed to before, like space. but I don't think it would be in the shape of a person. in my head it (and im creating on the fly here) would be very octopus or squid like, at least 2 people to give it basic operations, with a sophisticated AI to make it "easier" to pilot. but then is it still a mech or is it a space ship? and given just how deadly space warfare is even in softer setting i thing that the mech warriors would want to be in power armor at the same time as their mech.

    usain bolt isn't actually that far behind the theoretical max speed of a human-shaped human-dense object using human-possible locomotion: we move by falling in an intended direction and catching ourselves, moving _well_ means making there be as little difference between those two states as possible, we can only convert so much of our pushing downwards into pushing forwards before pushing down less and forwards more means we run out of traction with which to maintain the system, the theoretical limit for a fit adult human male before they run out of possible traction vs drag (inotherwords literally just leaning at an angle with zero regards to the motion of running) is something like 30-33 miles an hour but practically speaking it would be _considerably_ less because that limit is assuming things like your adult human male is very tall and built like an olympic swimmer and running impossibly smoothly on a rubber surface specifically made to match their shoes (said rubber on rubber contact patch was calculated using an extensive but nonexhaustive sampleset of current examples of grippy materials of the time, I believe the math for the numbers I'm quoting was done in the late 90s but I'm going off the top of my head with stuff from a good portion of my life ago here). ^we can shuffle forwards in considerably higher winds than that but there is a pretty huge difference between the traction generated while remaining mostly planted and the traction generated while running. ps: we _also_ have limitations on how fast our muscles move and the leverage of how they attach to our bones which also just so happen to max out at somewhere around 30 mph depending on body plan. I feel the need to add that these numbers roughly matching are almost certainly coincidental as finding humans that get anywhere even remotely close to 20mph is absurdly rare even today with training plans starting from childhood and steroids and...huh, a few other advantages that would also sound a lot like supersoldier stuff if I said them to someone from the 1800ds.

    Practical mechs are about as described; against infantry they are armor, and against armor they are infantry, existing as an intermediate step between. Titanfall titans, stripped of the more exotic features, are fairly practical, being exactly large enough to fit the pilot into the torso and no larger, though they tend unnecessarily tall (and are projected to be far, far heavier than they actually would be at their size (40t vs. 10-20t), but that's more designers struggling with estimating weights). Gundams and mobile suits, meanwhile, while stated to be the weight of a tank should be something like 150-300 tons as typically illustrated/animated and based on armament and armor. Things like the Landmates from Appleseed and other minimechs/half-mechs, which have some features of power armor and some of mechs, are the most likely interpretation to be viable. You lose volume efficiency, armor per enclosed volume, but can keep a significant amount of armor in key areas (torso and perhaps thighs, if half-mech) due to total reduction in size. Armament will lend itself towards things appropriate to the 5-10t weight class, if not smaller, with recoilless rifles, autocannons, gunmortars, and rocket systems; Most things that can be mounted on something like a humvee or helicopter gunship will fit within necessary recoil caps. I have one in the works (though directed towards more utility tasks) I hope to debut before year's end. Regarding the logo, it looks good but is a bit difficult to parse at a glance. It stands out somewhat readily in a thumbnail, but if another channel had one similar they could be easily mistaken. The elements overlap too much, and the lines are too thin to be read from a distance. Looking at the thumbnails to other recent videos from you in my suggested feed (each bearing a different version), neither is entirely legible due to the size and number of elements with excessive detail, though both *can* be made sense of to some extent.

    I disagree with your assessment of trust and its proposed non-relation to the word faith. There are plenty of words within the English language that are functionally the same. The word faith may be more commonly used in religious circles but its use remains the same.

    • @jasonwolfe4205

      Trust is based on experience. You trust a close friend, not a complete stranger. You trust that a bridge isn't going to collapse because every bridge you've been on before hasn't. When a point of trust is violated, the result is usually a form of PTSD (anxiety). When a point of faith is violated, the result is usually a form of depression. That's how I know there's a difference.

    • @stormlordrising7826
      @stormlordrising7826 День тому

      Respectfully, I would disagree and argue that you are confusing high hopes with faith. A member of a religion must trust (have faith) that their understanding of creation and divinity is valid based on their experiences. Doing otherwise invalidates their religion as a religion and would relegate it to merely fiction. Something that would not be worth so rigorously following.

      @@stormlordrising7826 And I would argue (respectfully) that you're confusing faith for trust. If living by any culture's tenets (religious or secular) has produced desirable results for you in the past, then that is trust, not faith. If doing what you're doing hasn't been getting you results (or is doing you more harm than good) and you keep doing it anyway, then you're an idiot. Look at the average lefty progressive. They're all clearly miserable, but they can't admit it for exactly the reasons you mentioned. So they double down and try to drag everyone else down into the mud with them. This is the sort of mentality I'm arguing against. All that said, you are correct in that we have to, at some point, set reason down and hope/trust that there's some apriori bedrock to plant our feet on. Otherwise we're just monkeys flailing in the dark looking for a light switch that doesn't exist.

      Forgive me, but I never suggested we abandon our reasoning. Faith (trust) in any healthy relationship should rather be the result of reasoning. Most husbands, for example, should be able trust their wives to remain faithful (trustworthy) not only because of the mutual marital vow but also because of their previously built relationship with said wives. Pure leftists, at the end of the day, fear dialogue because they find security in their ignorance. A person’s ultimate allegiance should be to objective truth, regardless of its agreeableness to preconceived notions, because it may very well be the only thing we’ll have when the chips are down. Faith divorced from reason becomes blind to truth and harmful to everyone.

But to be faithful in such a way requires trust, which requires experience, and thus is separate from the first concept of faith as unthinking allegiance. You see? I'm not arguing against faith (in the productive sense), only drawing a box around it so as to set it apart from the dogmatic kind (which I don't really know another word for other than fanaticism).

The first military mech was by no means cost effective or even practical, but by god did it scare the crap out of all the other great houses. So much so that they immediately jumped in on making their own with out even considering the flaws in the concept. There are guns designed on both sides to shoot underwater but that doesn't seem to be something that happens commonly. The ZSU 57-2 for example was designed to shoot down dive bombers which were quickly discontinued after WW 2, it turned out to be an excellent anti infantry weapon though.

    The thing about warfare is things are always changing. So many "nonsensical" and "inconcievable" doubts about existing technologies have been long laid to rest. Everyone seems to know what modern militaries do and don't need without paying any attention to the naysayers of the past. Remember when the assault rifle was a stupid idea, or the osprey? How about hundreds of year old concepts for tanks and other vehicles only just recently implemented fully? That's not even considering the idea that there's a lot of stake in the modern understanding of vehicular warfare. People don't want their shit going the way of the dinosaur even when they're on top, so the resist and tell you that "x" can't exist because of "y and z" reasons, and that's honestly one of the main reasons people DO want bipedal mechs, because othera try to stamp it out. There's something to be said about mankind as well when it comes to making fiction a reality. We're not just animals. We will things into existence with our minds and our hands. We seek roles to fill and problems to solve with our implements. We are a cut above every other creature on this planet in terms of raw potential. That is the way we were made.

    one day I created a small story just a test about Mechs, I will share it here with all of you ''The stars sparkled on the starry horizon, illuminating the vastness of outer space. Human space exploration advanced like never before, reaching distant corners of the galaxy in search of new horizons. However, what humans discovered surpassed even their wildest expectations. A reconnaissance probe sailed through the cosmic sea, dispatched to analyze unknown planetary systems. Its sensors detected an anomaly on the outskirts of a distant galaxy. As they drew closer, the anomaly transformed into a breathtaking sight: an alien civilization flourished there, but these were not the kinds of beings humans anticipated encountering. The aliens were a biological marvel, defying any concept of known life forms. Their bodies were a unique blend of exotic colors and intricate patterns, and their anatomical structures were entirely non-humanoid. They possessed multiple limbs and eyes that seemed to probe the universe with insatiable curiosity. Initial communications were met with curiosity, but this curiosity soon gave way to a storm of misunderstandings. Physical differences led to deep incomprehension, fueled by mutual suspicion. The aliens perceived human presence as a threat, and soon, the first sparks of war ignited. Retaliatory attacks from the aliens caught humans off guard. Space bases were targeted, leaving a trail of destruction and causing irreplaceable losses. Diplomacy failed, and the escalation into conflict became inevitable. With unwavering resolve, human leaders decided on a drastic course of action. An invasion of the nearest alien planet was planned, and the human armed forces mobilized, gearing up to face an unknown enemy on their own turf. The clash was inevitable, a collision of two distinct civilizations with their ideologies and armaments. But what fascinated human strategists amidst this conflict was the innovative approach the aliens took to warfare. At the heart of this untamed world, the alien civilization showcased a resourcefulness that harkened back to the essence of survival. Lacking the vehicles known to humans, they forged an unparalleled alliance with their environment, resurrecting the remains of titanic beasts to create imposing mechanical monoliths. These machines, each a formidable fusion of organic and synthetic, resonated with the primal energy of their predecessors. Yet, a curious similarity connected these formidable machines to the human species. The imposing mechs, despite their alien origins, echoed the silhouette of Earth's primates, as if the threads of life intertwined across the cosmos, weaving common forms amid infinite diversity. On the fateful day when the conflict escalated into open war, the battlefield was a distant planet, its terrain alien and unforgiving. The horizon trembled as dozens of colossal mechs advanced. These biomechanical machines were a testament to alien ingenuity, blending organic aesthetics with technological lethality. Armed with gleaming blades, powerful energy cannons, and devastating grenades, the mechs presented a symphony of fury and innovation. As the mechs moved forward, a different kind of symphony echoed, a harmonious chorus of human light tanks. Swift and agile, these machines embodied human ingenuity at its peak. Their speed was matched only by the ferocity of their firepower, armed with ammunition capable of piercing the mechs' joints with precision. Their velocity was an advantage, their movements a dance of calculated evasion. The battle was about to commence, and the fate of both worlds hung in the balance. As the two forces converged on the battlefield, tension hung in the air. Metallic giants collided with the precision of a dance, their steps shaking the very foundation of the world beneath them. Mechs swung their massive appendages, while tanks swiftly maneuvered, firing precise shots with lethal intent. The ensuing battle was a symphony of destruction, a clash of technology and strategy, of metal and flesh. Mechs roared as energy beams sliced through the sky, countered by the thunderous cannons of tanks. Explosions illuminated the horizon, casting a somber glow over the war-ravaged landscape. In the midst of chaos, two worlds collided, their motivations rooted in fear, pride, and survival. As mechs advanced in formation, tanks evaded and attacked, exploiting weaknesses and gaps in alien defenses. The battlefield resounded with the sound of explosions, the scent of burnt metal and sulfur permeating the air. The clash of fire and steel marked the beginning of a conflict that transcended mere species. It was a testament to the consequences of misunderstandings, a vivid reminder of the power that could arise from the meeting of civilizations. As the dust settled and the smoke cleared, the outcome remained uncertain. Both sides bore the scars of the confrontation. The alien mechs, once seen as monstrous, now stood as a marvel of ingenuity. Human tanks, embodiments of perseverance, showed that even the most formidable adversaries could be challenged. This was the dawn of a conflict that would test not only combat skills but also humanity's capacity for understanding and negotiation. The future remained uncertain, shrouded in mystery and uncertainties, as the first pages of this epic story were written in fire and steel on alien battlefields''

      It's because men (on the whole) are rational, deductive problem solvers, where women (again, in general) are more intuitive and emotional. The idea of science as cold and harsh comes mainly from the 19th century (Victorian Era), as this was the age of industry, scientific development and of secularization. It's no coincidence that this is where stories like Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, The Time Machine, War of the Worlds and so forth come from. Basically, science was new and scary. The world was changing, and from the everyman's perspective it was turning cold and grey (like iron). And as these new changes were deemed the fault of science, the association just came about naturally.

The problem is that he's got a flock of magiteck dragons guarding the palace. So, rather than march in there to their deaths, they construct a squad of anthro-dragon mechs using advanced forms of alchemy and so forth as a kind of inverse trojan horse, meant to lure the bad guy out by taunting him with a defiant sight that his ego simply won't allow him to ignore. Was this strictly necessary for the plot? I want to note that Capitalism, as a term, was originally coined by Karl Marx to uncharitably define the Free Market economy in a manner that aligned with his worldview (from my understanding of it). In fact, it is precisely because Karl Marx coined the term to disparage Free Market economics that I don't use it to describe the free market. Instead, I am more of the mindset that people should simply be free to do as they wish within their lives, but within reason. I would be called a "Libertarian" by many, especially when I go at length describing the corrupting influence of power, its relation to centralized authority, and the potential damage its interference can have on the economy. However, I'm not naive. If we were to abolish the government tomorrow, we would still end up with a new one forming because there will always be a market for security, and governments are a little too good at it. The keyword to life is "balance." You must balance equality, order, and freedom. Allow people to make their own decisions, and they will not become resentful of you. Give everyone a fair chance, and they will not blame someone else. Provide order, and you will relieve the anxiety of trying to find one's place in the world and provide for one's own security. The problem I believe we face today is that people have become overzealous in their advocacy for one of these three virtues. The Fascist wants to ORDER society so it runs like clockwork. The Socialist desires EQUALITY so that no one feels envious of the other. And the Liberal covets FREEDOM above all else, to never have to call someone master. Prioritizing any of these above the other is not, in itself, wrong. It is when you desire one at the expense of the others that things fall apart. But these are simply my thoughts as a layman on the subject.

    • @jasonwolfe4205
      @jasonwolfe4205 3 дні тому

      If I were to redo this video, I would call it "Why the Free Market is a Myth", because what invariably happens is that, when people are free to do as they wish, some people rise to the top (because it is our way to form status hierarchies) and those people, once established, will then always work to make it harder for others to rise up to the same degree in the same manner and usurp them. This is why I say that capitalism (as in the free market) will always result in oligarchy, which inevitably leads to fascism (big business + big government) which inevitably breeds communistic sentiments.

    I think the phrase "mechanical Stoicism" comes to mind. Taking out an entire army with a mech suit big or small or a militaristic individualist's wet dream (which ironically is a contradiction) and it's no surprise it's popular in fiction. When it comes to romanticization mechs/walkers are second to none compared to everything else. Myself included of course. My take on a realistic mech/walker would be something like the Goliath from StarCraft but a little different. Only as tall as it needs to be, twin 30mm autocannons and instead of SAMs a mortar on its back, maybe AT missiles and smoke grenade dischargers to top it all off. That's it.

    to quote brigador: "Mechs take considerably more maintenance than anything on wheels or treads. But when the War Council gets to see a new heavy legs unit put their foot straight through the top of a tank, it shakes the part of their brain that worries about money. I like to think the first mech field test was sort of like when the military first got real hot and bothered for helicopters back on Earth. They want the slick new stuff, who cares what it costs? Mechs are the standard-bearers, the cavalry, and the commanders all in one. Being taller means overlapping fields of fire with shorter vehicles, better top kill and defilade, and less trouble with comms in dense urban areas on account of the antennae height. Put them hull down ("kneeling") and you've got great defensive fire, perfect for covering infantry and powersuits. Despite how long mechs have played an active role in combat and police work, there's a segment of the Brass that still argues against them hard. They're "walking targets" that are "too expensive to maintain" and "damage roads and infrastructure because they don't broadly distribute their weight." Ok maybe some of that's true, but bureaucrats don't know what a psych-out it is to get stared down by a heavy. Gets you that fear deep in your reptile brain, sympathetic nervous system response.
