Short History of MS JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT
The MS Johan van Oldenbarnevelt or "JVO" was a Dutch passenger liner built in 1929. It was the largest diesel-powered ship built in the Netherlands at the time. Initially designed for the Holland-Dutch East Indies route, it served as a troopship during World War II. After the war, it became a significant vessel in Dutch-Australian immigration history, making 44 voyages to Melbourne between 1950 and 1963, carrying many Dutch and European migrants seeking a new life in Australia. After a long and varied career, the JVO was sold to the Greek Line in 1963. They renamed her the TSMS Lakonia and converted her into a cruise ship. Sadly, her time as the Lakonia was short-lived. On December 22, 1963, just eight months after being refitted, a fire broke out on board while she was cruising in the Atlantic Ocean near Madeira. The fire spread rapidly, and despite rescue efforts, the ship was tragically lost on December 29th while being towed to port. The disaster resulted in the loss of 128 lives. The once proud Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, which had carried so many people across the world, met a devastating end.
