I love all things to do with railways and here I share a few videos about my model railway endeavours :-)
Organ and Pantographs on Making Tracks 2 Chester Cathedral
Whilst the Cathedral Organ was playing I took a video of the Making Tracks 2 layout and ran some trains to show the pantographs in contact with the overhead wires. Just fantastic to run model trains in a Cathedral with the organ playing !!

Before we opened to the public, I was able to put my new Accurascale Deltic through it's paces on Pete Waterman's Making Tracks 2 at Chester Cathedral. It looked and sounded superb ! If you visit the cathedral - come and say hello ! - we are running everyday except Sundays until 3/9/22 Chris
Cheshire Lines Helix Demo.

Following a request to see the helices on the layout I've put together this video showing a train run two complete circuits using the inner and outer helix lines. The two helix tracks are 2nd & 3rd radius, but would recommend going 4th radius. Any questions - just ask in the comments below. Music : Epic Angel from : soundcloud.com/e-soundtrax/ep... Great painstaking work...and patience..hats off to you...
Thank you ! - yes it took a long time, but the results were worth it !
Came here after the review of the latest tooling APT review video on Little Wickets channel. Certainly a great improvement. Seems a lot of manufactures go to a lot of trouble to make locos in fine detail but then skimp out on things like coach interiors... Now all you need to do is paint around 200 people so the train is populated rather than an empty coach movement 🙂
What a transformation Chris. They look brilliant. Why can't Hornby do the correct interior in the first place. I know what great job you do, from when I came up from Milton Keynes model railway club at Pete Watermans place. 👍
Hi John, great to hear from you and thank you for our kind words :-) Chris
I have the 5-car set from the 80's - purchased my from Beatties model shop, Maneage street in Helston, Cornwall. The only problem I had was the motor which was replaced. I went to a local club, where I live now, with a friend who also had the early 5-car set and we were given the okay to race each other. By god did they go - we actually got them to run at full speed (having checked station and other clearances) and they both ran exceptionally well with no derailing. Unfortunately, I am awaiting a move before I can start on my layout, so it will remain boxed till then.
That sounds like a lot of fun ! 🙂
WOW 😯 beautiful work
Looks most impressive. Well done.
Thank you - really appreciate your kind words :-) Chris
Superb. Do you fancy making me some seat covers. I would like to do my APT. For a profit naturaly!! Great job.
Hi Richard, thank you for your kind words. Such has been the interest, I have put a kit together - my email is in the 'about' section of this UA-cam channel - drop me a line and I will tell you more :-). Chris

@@richardmarshall4322 HI Richard, have you copied my email address into an email to me ? Chris
Fantastic work, you must be so proud - would love to know how you calculated the helix and built them.
One thing about helixes with the threaded rod and nuts. No matter whether you are using just nuts and washers or tube spacers between levels. If the tubing is cut square or with the nuts the clamping if the sections fan cause the section to distort so that it is twisted slightly at each riser. One way with tubing to avoid this would be to dut the ends of the tubing at an angle that matches the helix angle. For just using nuts and washers the use of spherical washers would eliminate any twist. If using eood spacers cut to the matching angle. For wood risers l like the idea of risers that have dados cut at the proper uniform distance at the matching angle. Also the outer perimeter of the helix should have some sort of barrier. Just in case. Another idea l have not seen is the use of curved turnouts at a certain point to allow the exterior portion of the helix to be used for a special interest scene. Especially if modeling railroading in the mountains.
Hi Chris, I have wondered for a while who built the Cheshire Lines layout, now I know. I am jealous of your Prince Albert bridge but your layout is indoors, I am building my bridge out of wood and aluminium as mine is outside in the garden and as such it is not possible to make a 'scale' model of the bridge but it is a reasonable copy. I look forward to seeing you at Chester Cathedral with Watford station etc. and the rest of the 'Railnuts'.
Hi Peter, Thanks for your comments :-) Doing a railway outside presents all sorts of challenges ! - bring some pictures to Chester - look forward to seeing you there ! Chris
Hi have you got page where I can buy or down load this decal seats covers. Amazing improvements
Thanks for your kind comments - yes I've put a kit together - please email me - my address is in the About section of the channel. Chris.
This is absolutely beautiful, Chris!! I would love to film your layout and see it one day! 😁 2:38
You are welcome anytime! 😀
Hello This is an odd request, but do you sell the decals and head rests as a kit anywhere online ? Regards
Hi, I have had so many people ask, I've actually made a kit - drop me a line and I'll tell you more - my email is in the About section found in the channel description. Chris.
@@CheshireLines Thank you, for the fast reply, I have found what I think is your website, which has your item's on, plus this video and pictures of your APT. Once I get 10 mins I will make a purchase. Kindest regards
Hi, I don't have a website - would be interested to see it - could you email me the link ? - Chris
Hi - think I've just found the website - it's the APT one and yes that is my kit - my mail address is on there - sorry for confusion
I love the Brunel bridge!!!
Thank you ! Really appreciate you kind words 🙂 Chris
WHAT A LOVELY LAYOUT YOU HAVE CREATED
Thank you for your kind comment - really appreciated. Chris :-)
Would you charge to make another?
I want to add a helix to my layout soon
Can you share the seat covers file you used and how to print them please? I'd like to do the same thing on my APT when I get it? Just ordered the R30229 set :)
Hi Andrew, I now do a kit - drop me an email - address in the 'about' section. Chris
Wow, that is very impressive.. did you notice the last wheel on the rear bogie axle on the loco was not touching the rails for most of the time?
Hi Tim, yes this is design fault on the loco - I've now added a thin shim and the wheels now touch - bit fiddly to get right but it's something you can't unsee once you spot it ! :-) Chris
This layout is fantastic.. I did notice that on the 1st helix inner track the carriages were touching an electronic board @5:42. You might want to watch the footage and see what I am talking about if you are not aware of it already. I would love to do something like this in my train room and as I mainly run steam loco's I would have to think about what sized radius I would need to lay the tracks at adn then work out if I have enough room to do so.. I would love to have a large fiddle yard either under the main layout like you do or something similar... time to put my thinking hat on and do some maths or at least consult anyrail. hmmmm food for thought tho.. thank you for a great video showing your layout which is fantastic as I have stated at the start of this comment. Cheers from Australia Tim.
Thanks Tim - really appreciate your comments - yes I had spotted the training wire and it's now fixed ! Heliices are great but can be troublesome - if you have the space go 4th radius ! Chris
Hi Chris how do i organise to get the decal set from you please😮. I cant find your about page, your APT is really a good looking model and the decals make a hugh improvement. Thank you. Guy😊
Hi Guy, for some reason the about section only appears on the desk top version of UA-cam - v.odd. Try contacting me on Chris dot Clenton at g mail dot com
What colour did you use for the tan for the interior?
I used a spray can of SupaDec cream. Cheap and does a great job. Hope that helps. Chris
Hi Chris, I've just seen John's (Piccadilly Model Railways) UA-cam video on improving the Hornby APT interiors, I asked him the question about if he sold the decal sheets for the seats, which he said no, but he did point me in your direction. Is this something you still sell? As I'm looking to improve the interiors on my 14 car set (this may take some time). I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Antony.
What colors did you use? (Paint brand and numbers?)
Hi Michael, for the 2nd class interiors I used SupaDec cream, the rest I mixed from a pack of acrylics - 2nd Class carpet - dark brown 1st Class carpet - dark grey 1st Class seats backs - dark blue 1st Class tables and seat fronts - sky blue Buffet counter and corridor walls - maroon Buffet under counter wall - white Buffet corridor ends - dark purple
Hi mate great job on the hornby APT
Thanks ! 🙂
Hi, I realise Im quite late to the party on this. Ive just ordered an APT, and was re-watching videos from when this train was released. I had the thought of recreating the interior with decals and painting it up etc etc because the hornby interior is, well lets say incomplete, just as you said, well kinda, lol. Unbelievably I then discover your channel, doing EXACTLY what Im planning, truly unreal. So really enjoyed seeing the transformation, and indeed what a difference. I will definitely be doing this. Great to see. When I do mine, Ill shout out your channel so people can see the original work. Might be few weeks, see how time goes.
What a coincidence !! It really does make a huge difference - I've had a lot of people reach out to me for a kit so I put one together if you're interested. Just drop me a line via my email. Good luck with it and I look forward to seeing the result. Chris.
Hi John, you should find my email address in the about section. Chris
@@CheshireLines hi, thats where I looked. You have your youtube page, no email. Its fine, don’t worry, it wont take that long to make my own. I do also need to create the ‘intercity APT’ logos anyway as Im going to spray up the cab windows in black to represent the ‘in service’ look. Received the model today, fitted the main decoder, running in now, very smooth.
@@piccadillymodelrailways That's odd. Try this : Chris dot Clenton at gmail dot com
Hi chris great improvement 😊
Thank you - really appreciate your comment. Chris.
Many thanks. A great video and superb layout. Seriously thinking about building two helixes and so this has been very informative thank you. Can I ask what gradient you used please and as I will need to use 2nd and 3rd radius due to space issues, do any of you diesel locos and freight wagons or coaches have any issues ascending or descending please? Thanks
Hi Trevor - thank you for your kind words. The gradient is really dictated by the height of the track above - on mine its climbing 84mm in each circle. Heavy diesel locos have no problem - does depend on length of trains. Steam does tend to struggle, which is why I wish I had gone 4th radius - but they do take a lot of space. I would also recommend installing DCC concepts power base to help lighter locos. Hope that helps, Chris
@@CheshireLines thanks Chris. Did you have to use the DCC Concepts powerbase?
@@TrevorOakley-tt8pd Well - I tried to do it on the cheap and layed a ferric strip between the tracks and put magnets on the locos - it does work, but the strip does sometimes cause derailments so will probably remove it - wish I had gone power base and 4th radius - now a big job to change it !
Fantastic detailing - not sure I have the patience to water-slide a whole rake like that, but excellent tips for improving the innards! The finished result looks so much better.
Thank you for your kind words - really appreciate it - it was a long job, but it does make all the difference. Have a great day, Chris
Great to see the helix's in action . One point though , on the first helix shouldn't the outside track be the up and inside the down ? The physics of it mean the outer is a shallower incline
Yes you're right - it has to do with my main loops of the layout - the outside 2 are connected to outer line of the helix and the inner 2 loops connected to the R2 helix line. It is possible to swap between them in the fiddle yard, but up top on the main tracks less so. I am considering rebuilding the helices to put in an R4 track so I may also put in points at the top to allow switching between the outer and inner loops.
Excellent. But don't forget the 15mph speed limit...and gw King's weren't allowed over it until more recent years.
I noticed in your "tour" video that the Uffington White Horse as decamped to Cheshire!
You are absolutely right Keith or. . . . did the ancients mark King Arthurs resting place in this way. . . . ;-)
All i have to say is AMAZING!!!! you have done the most amazing job. I currently do not have any model railways myself as a very keen aviation enthusiast, however.... interiors are my passion, especially 70-80s transport interiors. Brilliant you were able to create such a life like interior with actual colour photos, still a bit wierded out how BR decided 1st would be blue and 2nd red???? HST was almost other way round, albeit 1st orange not red. As a 70s child loving anythimg that was faster than my Dad's Mk 3 Cortina the HST original Mk3 coaches have always facinated me, and more so the interiors...............................which is why you video has captiord me sooo much. Has anyone...you know of, transformed, with your detail, any Blue Grey Mk 3 coaches? especially the catering stock, i was always baffled as a kid why Mk3 catering stock varied so much.....yellow red line..blue red line....buffet-bar....restaurant-buffet...3 windows...4 windows etc, list goes on. Always struggle to find any interior shots of BR's catering stock on line. Soooo many questions about coaching stock now i feel my passion for transport is in the detail 'YOU' have put in to this model. I need to know more about mk1 to 3 coaches :)
Hi Asa, thank you so much for your kind comments - it make the effort worthwhile to hear from an expert in interiors like yourself - thank you again. Chris.
I would love the retooled APT and I'd definitely try this. It looks fantastic! I can also feel a visit to Crewe coming on!
Thanks Ian - really appreciate the comment - Crewe is definitely worth a visit !
Now that looks great. Would you consider selling the prints via ebay etc? I have 2 APT's to do and plans to make and APT-U which would have been the next step if it carried on in service. I painted an old APT-P which took hours but this is on another level. 😍

Thanks Marc - really appreciate your comment - the covers really do make a big difference ! Thank you again. Chris
Gosh I've never realised just how badly wrong Hornby got the interior on the APT-P, even the Rapido APT-E fairs better. Having looked at the photos I took of the real APT-P set at Crewe I can see that Hornby got used basic shades of the moquettes as the moulding colour for the seats instead of the light cream of the panels etc which would have faired better in my opinion. Nevertheless you've done an excellent job there, bravo!
Thank you ! - really appreciate your comments - you're right it would have been better to do cream interiors.
Lovely running. it`s good to see it when there`s no body about .you really appreciate the work that`s gone into it. Well done Chris.
Fantastic layout.
Thank you - really appreciate the comment. Chris 🙂
Very impressive, well done on your helix construction
Thank you - really appreciate the comment. Chris 🙂
I'm surprised you didn't populate your coaches before putting them back together. Or is that for later. Fantastic work really made such a difference 👏
Thanks Mike, you're right, passengers would be good - at the time I just didn't feel like painting up 400+ little people, but it is something I plan to do for the future !
That bridge is absolutely impressive. It is a great project on its own right. Congratullations on the achievement.
Hi, Great layout, thanks for sharing. I'm in the middle of building a new section for my layout, which includes, as well, two helixes with 2nd and 3rd radius. I did already some tests and it all runs well, including steam locos (even on the 2nd radius). However, it's always better to have some margin. Therefore I'm serious considering changing the helixes to 3rd and 4th radius. As I did them with flex track, I can reuse most of it, as well as the threaded rod, nuts, washers, etc. Plywood, would have to be scrapped. I have to think throgh it a bit more, but definitely, the change has to be done now, before the top level is built. Let's see if I have the courage to go ahead...
Hi Antonio, knowing what I know now, I would definately go 4th radius and probably only with one line. I would also be tempted to lay DCC Concepts powerbaye under it too. Chris
Hi mate Great vid and thanks for sharing awesome layout Cheers Mark
Hi Chris, Graham here, we met last week at ‘Making Tracks’ and you kindly ran my DB Cargo Class 90 on the layout. Many Thanks again..!🙏 Wow..! You have a ‘stunning’ layout here..!😲 Many Congratulations..!🎉✔️👍
Thanks Graham - appreciate your comments ! Great to meet you and the 90 which was a lovely loco to have on the layout 🙂
Hi, I have just acquired a 4.5m x 3.0m railway room. Am I expecting too much to be hoping to have a low level fiddle yard with helixes in that kind of space?
Hi Mike, Hmmm - I think you may struggle - the diameter of my helices is 1.1m so if you had 2 you would be left with 2.3 m for the fiddle yard - the length of each road would decrease with every road added due to the points - so you need to have an undertstanding of how long and how many trains you wish to store in the fiddle yard as it may end up not being worthwhile because your trains are too long. An alternative would be to have one helix into a fiddle yard and at the end you have a reversing loop using space under and around the rest of the room - A train would then enter the fiddle yard via the helix and then leave the fiddle yard via the reversing loop to ascend the same helix - this would give you extra fiddle yard space, but would put the trains back on the top in a reversed direction. So... you have enough space to do 2 helices, but will it give you the fiddle yard space you want ? . . . I would also recommend using AnyRail software to draw out accurately your fiddle yard - this will help you decide whether you have enough space or not. Hope this helps, Chris
Hi, I’m just converting half my double garage into a railway room of 4,6m x 2.6m. I’ve built a track plan in SCARM which will have a single 5 layer 2nd and 3rd radius helix with a 3% slope descending from the main scenic level to the lower fiddle yard, with a reverse loop ruining around the outside of the fiddle yard. This gives me 11 storage lines reach of about 2m long, enough for a train of one loco and six coaches or a five car rake HST. I’ve watched a number of different UA-cam videos on helix and I’m feeling my plan should work. I intend to test all my planned loco/coach/wagon combinations on a test two layer helix before I start the full layout build just to be sure. Thanks for your video as it further increases my confidence that my plan should work. Great layout with a wow moment seeing your bridge.
What a great build that was and some stunning shots across the bridge - Love it. Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev - it took some time, but the result was worth it !
