    I use Roget 's Thesaurus to find things to write about. For example, I wrote, I'm Infinite. The Art of Dispute, Road to Ruin, etc. I wrote complete songs just by picking interesting titles from Mr. Roget's Thesaurus. Try it.😊

    I very much agree with what youre saying here in regards to needing space for ideas to eventually form . Recently ive been on both sides of having to force myself to come up with something pretty much from scratch and just letting an idea happen organically . I know which method i prefer but there is value and useful lessons in both.

    I am a black American, 59. I have always been deeply drawn to Irish music. When I see pictures of Ireland it feels like I need to go home. I did my DNA and found out I'm 21 percent Irish. This song has been a favoirite Christmas song since I first heard it. Mr. McGowan's death hit me hard. It's a hard candy Christmas for me this year. I will take this time to bathe in my melancholy, then I'll pick myself up, dust myself off, pack up my melancholy for another year and try and muddle through.

    Interesting take, he is utterly brilliant. I'm floored by Misty Morning Albert Bridge, again a sense of place anchoring some distant memory that explodes into a euphoric yearning dream of something past. You're right, the time is all over the place, is it memory or dream or now? It all blends. And why it knocks you over sideways. In so few words. I did my time in London as a drinker and lover and all of it like so many and he is the poet laureate of London for sure.

    Big love to you John. If you'll take some advice from an old pal - I don't know anything about the revenue-earning aspect of UA-cam so not sure how one earns from that, I assume it requires a fairly large following. I don't think comparing yourself to other UA-camrs is any more helpful than comparing yourself to other songwriters, I always found that would kill any idea dead. As a content idea though, I'm very fond of those videos that follow an idea from conception to production. Maybe a video blog style thing where you record little snippets through the process from initial idea, lyrics, instrumentation, recording, to the finished product. What could give more insight into the process than watching it blossom? Whatever you decide, I hope things pick up for you soon dude and you know where to find me if you need to.

    Great topic, not talked about often enough. Music is not supposed to be "boiled rice", it's supposed to have human touch, or why bother? When I hear most current pop I feel less human. To compare this to singer/songwriter pieces of previous times makes me shudder. Some of the greatest songs spring from tiny insights and insights into feelings that are sheer luck. The writer is ready though. Prepared. I could go on about this, but that's enough. I find a spark from so many things - stories I hear among crowds, old maps, weather forecasts, something Ma said, folktales or urban myths, often it's sheer chance that any of this gets to the song stage. I keep all the fragments for later as well. Best of health, Mr G.

    A bridge has a lyrical thematic meaning but, even more, a harmonic structural musical meaning. Harmony has subsided to beat or "beats" as the musically untutored call it. Some current "Songs" have a chord. No key change. No coda. American go on about the "pre-chorus" taking the place of the middle 8. But that's too fleeting a device. All the great ballad songs of the 1950s and 60s and the singer-songwriter art of the 1970s use a bridge to a purpose. The middle 8 in these pieces adds more life to the range of emotion when you have a lyric that is grown up and complex - as life is. Today's pop "lyrics" which are really more like advert writing. "Look at me, look at me". Immature twaddle only half as important as the video images. To me, the Artist names these days are in themselves like begging bowls to a public which sees no reason why it should pay for music. It's now a hard road for music that has human, as opposed to machine, values. I love your song, that's solitude captured. You keep surprises in your writing - to me that's the essential element that makes music and words worth hearing. The bridge is a huge part of that surprise.

    • @thesongwritersdropin2565
      @thesongwritersdropin2565 Рік тому

      Hi EV . Yes ,sadly the whole ethos or lack of it has changed from producing art to reach the human spirit as opposed image based and progressively insular approach as you've pointed out . We may be in the minority but they're are still Songwriters striving for the real . These things will always coexist side by side even to a perhaps smaller degree (or may just appear like that on the surface ) it's hard to say. Do it for the arts sake always as many of us do . It is very true that bridges are becoming less common. Middle 8s also, and they've been rare for some time now. Seems to be that songs are generally 2 section things now. I blame djs. Their approach seems to be: hook, chorus, breakdown. Skip the other stuff. Although the artist in me screams objection at this carnage, I do see the logic as their way of working feeds probably far more directly from audience reaction than most songwriters, who (I think - and me included) tend to create material and hope audiences don't switch off midway, and then later drop from live sets the songs that see people's attention drift.

    • @thesongwritersdropin2565
      @thesongwritersdropin2565 Рік тому

      Hey Leon . I'm not really sure how the Demise of these sections like the bridge or M8 for that matter came about. I know that's it's nothing new as we've had simpler song forms previously like blues ,rock and roll in the fifties and within pop music aswell . Maybe longer forms may come around again in time but It does seem like the simpler forms have been around at this juncture for a while now and seemed to have overstayed their welcome. I've heard that commercial pop has had the intervention of music phycologists and marketing people controlling the market which is possibly why other forms have been forced out of the picture but it's just one theory . There may be many factors and it's never just one . Thanks for the feedback .

    Always looking forward to your thinking, Mr Gallagher. I think about my favourite lyric to story songs, and you are so right - the intro needs to be creating curiosity. The best have telling details, even one thing that makes a picture in the listener's mind. It's taken me years to appreciate how to let a lyric or a melody write itself, let it go where it wants, and not to copy anyone however great a writer they are. Best wishes. You have a great gift for essentials.

      Many thanks as always EV . Yeah it's taken me a while to understand this even though I've writing and recording for a while now. It's a wonderful journey and the success lies within it . All the best good sir . 🎶🙏

    Yep, I try to think like a movie camera to tell a story in a song, with brief telling details. "He gave her a dime store watch and a ring made from a spoon, Everyone's looking for someone to blame, when you share my bed, you share my name." (Tom's lyric from memory "Hold On"). "That's why she left Monte Rio, son, just like a bullet leaves a gun". - You are a breath of spring, Mr Gallagher. Great.

      Hi EV. Yeah I like the way you put that ,"to view it like a movie Camera telling the story". Additionally ,thanks for the Tom Waits Lyric . He is someone I admire greatly amongst many . Thanks for the feedback .

    It's useful to move a song from one style into another, because sometimes that gives it more life. I really enjoy your ideas and examples, Mr Gallagher.

    I don't have one, but another book that was popular decades back is called a Rhyming Dictionary. Like the Thesaurus, it broadens your possibilities to get a word or phrase that sings (exactly, sings). Best wishes, Mr Gallagher, great thinking.

    Your melody is exquisite, Mr Gallagher. Interesting way to get there, very direct and adaptable. Rhythm anchors emotion every bit as much as harmony chords do. I really enjoy your suggestions.

      Hi EV. Yes ,they all play an important role in the song for sure. I sometimes experiment with different Rhythms and do have Odd songs where there are different versions in terms of rhythm and feel . Thanks again for your great feedback .

    Just to throw in a great fact: Cole Porter didn't get rolling until age 38. I wonder what year you were born Mr Gallagher? I am 1961, and happily so. On career: location is the thing, where music is recorded, and there are collaborators and performers seeking songs. No song, no business - and the industry knows that this maxim remains true. - Ev, Blue Bee Theme Music.

      Hi Again EV . Thank you so much for your feedback. I hear you . I had no idea that Cole Porter started this late. I'm not sure how easy it is today as the industry has changed so much , but as you say ,the location of where you write ,record etc definitely gives you more of a chance. Living in Nashville ,even though everyone else is trying to do the same thing, will still give you a better chance than elsewhere. I was born in 68. Whats important is the craft comes before anything and everything else is a bonus. Thanks again .

      @@thesongwritersdropin2565 You have a rare ability to speak plainly and lucidly. Most of us stumble when we make a public speech. I have watched many teachers, Pat Patterson being the best. But you have something essential on the craft.
