    It's really annoying I've looked at a quite a few videos now trying to find someone that will point out where the one court line is on the court size mixing cup it stops at 28 Oz but there's 32 oz in a quart. And you use a 5-quart bucket And you mentioned that it showed ounces, yet it stops at 128 oz and there's 160 oz in 5 quarts wtf? Why would you not bother to show where the 1qt, 2.5qt and 5qt lines are. It baffles me why someone would point out the size of the quartz and only show a number that goes to 128 which does not represent 5 quarts. So I guess all you get to measure is 128 oz in your 5 quart mixing bucket. I'm not concerned with ratios right now I just need to measure out a 1 quart volume. Yet the mixing cups only go to 28 oz...

    I want to openly reply to @foggymtnbreakdown in case his comment generates any questions. Most of the people using paint strippers are not Chemists, so the information in the interview is meant to be informative without being overly complicated. It is also important to note that the EPA started restricting MeCl in 2008 and has continued to phase out all uses of the chemical. On July 8, 2024 the final EPA rule went into effect and unless you are DOD, NASA or a few other government entities, there are no more exceptions. Below is a response from one of our chemists to the questions presented by @foggymtnbreakdown Methylene chloride (1.325 g/ml) is more dense than water (1 g/l) and considered a dense solvent compared to most others we use (e.g. acetone = 0.785 g/ml). While the evaporation rate of MeCl is fairly high (14.5 vs. n-BuOAc = 1) , it is correct to state that MeCl will tend to “sink” due to the comparatively high density vs. other solvents. This is why MeCl should not be used in a closed space - it will displace the air in bottom of the room. MeCl may not attack some (maybe even most) fiberglass composites, but it is a very aggressive solvent and will disolve a number of commonly encountered automotive thermoplastics. This is why we caution people about using it on things like bumper facia, fenders, etc.

      A quick correction, I meant to type water (1 g/ml)… not water (1 g/l)

  • @foggymtnbreakdown

    I find two comments to be erroneous In this video. Josh Strobel, says that methylene chloride (MC) is a "heavy" solvent. I am a chemist. What does that even mean? MC is a small molecule with a low molecular weight. It evaporates quickly, so it is not "heavy" in the sense that it hangs around forever. It is not heavy on a weight-to-volume ratio like mercury. I bet it is lighter than water. Not only that, I am currently using straight methylene chloride on a 1967 Corvette fiberglass, "black glass", body panel with no distortion or melting or bending or softening. People have been using MC based paint strippers on Corvette fiberglass panels for decades. And for the people that read this, I am not saying where I buy MC.

    What is your step by step bare metal prep? How do you treat metal if there is suspect of rust pinholes that could not be removed by DA grinding? Please answer as if blasting is not the preferred option. Will epoxy primer seal out any oxygen to prevent rust from forming from pinholes that have been missed? Thank you.

    • @autobodysource
      @autobodysource 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your inquiry on the DTM Primer, along with the question on how to prepare a rusty pinhole steel surfaces. When removing and cleaning up rusty pinholes, the entire pinhole pit must be completely cleared of any rust Sometimes … er, most of the times, DA sanding will not get down far enough to fully remove and clean the pinhole. DA sanding will work fine on very shallow, surface type pinholes. Regarding deeper pinholes, we would recommend Sandblasting. Sandblasting is a great process to fully clean out rusty pinholes. However, be careful as to not over heat the metal, as it could cause warping of the metal. The primer will seal out oxygen causing further rust, again only if the pinholes are completely cleared.

    Yes, the government is to blame, but none of the products work anymore. Marketing departments keep adding and changing the product names and packaging and seeming to suggest that these new formulas work like the old Klean-Strip with Methylene Chloride which is what everyone wants and expects. Most of these are $75-$100+ per gallon and they just don't work. You might as well pay to have the parts sandblasted or sand it by hand. Everyone who is in the industry knows this.
