I'm aware that 2 of mine are Chinese, but they're pretty anyway. I'm not a collector. On the other hand, I bought a real Murano at a garage sale for a ridiculously low price because the owner didn't know what she had.

that Chinese base is not OPAQUE, it is TRANSLUCENT. Something opaque permits no light to pass through. Using the wrong word is misleading. Translucent means just what you see...light can pass through. That is what that word means...the transfer of light. But it is not transparent, which means you can see everthing; all the details are seen, just as if the glass was not there, like a window. But translucent means light comes through but you cannot really see what is there, like a bathroom window, frosted or textured. You cannot see clearly what is on the other side.

Another factor for value of a paperweight is artistry. It is a very difficult factor to measure. This would involve issues like colors but most importantly design quality. Difficult but nonetheless important.

Thanks for the video. Very interesting. Im thinking of starting to collect glass paperweights. I recently took possession of a glass paperweight i grew up with and that always fascinated me as a kid. How would i go about trying to identify its origin? It's been in my family for more than 50 years, and my dad, who got it, was an antique dealer, so it's probably much older than that. Any ideas about how i would investigate? Thanks.

I have about five Strathearn paperweights which is an accomplishment given the distance from Scotland on the Olympic peninsula in Washington state. I think that they are special.

  • @antiquesandlearningtolive4369

My 2.5" Perthshire came in today. Wow-O-Wow is it stunning. I can see the results of their company trashing 40%~ of the weights at the end of the week, if they don't pass QC. The canes are so sharp and clean. Beautiful translucent ground and absolutely perfect complex cane structure. It is a later one(P cane in center - probably late 70s/early 80s). Thank you for the videos again! Definitely inspiring and helping to move up in the quality of Millefiori examples in the collection. I still love the ones I have already, but it is amazing to see a weight specifically aimed at being flawless. Cheers and kind regards PaperWeight Investigate, -Alex

Brilliant interview. Thank you. I've renovated a few paperweights and I know just how hard it is to achieve a good result. Also, a superb tip about placing the weight into water to see how much glass there is covering the internal pattern.

Isn't she a divine presenter, yes? I'm a roughish, gnarly long-term combat veteran who returned from the wars and chimerically found a great deal of peace in art glass paperweights. As an overtly dudely-dude manly-man, it was something of a guilty secret fetish until I found this channel and connected with her exploration into the trade jargon and terminology associated with them. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks largely to her, now I enjoy my collection with apologies to none and quiet pride in this storied niche of art glass, which as it turns out is a truly mainstream, international pastime and the second-most common collecting sphere in the world after coins and stamps. Art quickens the soul. =) Thank you for commenting and look forward to seeing more from you here soon! ~ A fellow Southerner

@@LittleLouieLagazza Yes she is indeed! I automatically felt excited about the small paper weight collection I had the first time hearing her incredibly upbeat and joyous presentation. I'm currently working on finding myself in presenting videos. It is amazing you found comfort in a hobby after the tough life you lived. While I can't understand being a combat vet, collecting helped me out of a long time as a heavy alcoholic. I had been in antiques since I was a child, but didn't outwardly collect until later on. Then a series of events following a 3.5 year stent in NYC in lighting restoration pushed me into rock bottom. After getting out and cleaning up, I turned back to antiques and found things about them that seemed superficial as a younger man, to now be what makes it special. As far as paperweights are concerned, I still think a majority of mine(non Millefiori) are vintage Chinese. And while pretty, don't have much "show and tell" about them, I like them anyway. Her channel has helped me see things about them to better understand what I'm looking at. And manly men do collect beautiful and special things. I find foolish men to spend money on things they can't show anything for at the end of the week. But, apologies for the tangent. I am excited to see more of PaperWeight Investigate's future videos as well. I had zero idea incredible paperweights were still being produced. And now have two coming from across the pond after seeing her videos. My girlfriend has asked me to do a Q&A on antiques and values, so am trying to plan that out. Antiques resto is a solitary world, and I am finding it hard to present myself outwardly enough. But, anything worth doing is worth taking the time. I believe listening to most of her videos has given me some inspiration to not feel constrained in the excitement. I can't wait to post an updated video on the paperweights soon, with some really neat additions coming in. 😃 Nice to meet a fellow Southerner in the antiques(art glass in this case) world. Seems to still be slightly taboo for men to go nuts over art glass in some places. But, if I learned one thing in my days on Earth, it is that we should enjoy each day, enjoy what we have, and not ever worry about our existence being just a blip in the grand scheme. Thank you for the reply and will hopefully see you around her videos as well! As soon as my new job starts, I'll have more time to devote to the 17 different antiques I collect (from just a few to hundreds...haha), so more videos about different antiques. -Your friendly antiques restorer

  • @antiquesandlearningtolive4369

Thank you for the informative video! Seems I have had an eye for cheaply done Millefiori and well done. First thing I look for is bubbles topside. Them I look at how the base of the canes were cut. I have a couple of Chinese Millefiori paperweights, but they are well above the $29.99 eBay ones, which I purchased one recently to study the structure. And now you mentioned the colors, it is extremely obvious combined with some other observations. That said, I still have respect for well done Chinese Millefiori paperweights. They don't have the prestige of Italian glass, but some Chinese Millefiori paperweights look extremely well done. The clarity of the crystal used is also something I look for, and the uniformity of the canes. Unless it is a carpet of geometric shaped canes. I've just one example of that style, and the Murano sticker got lost during a move, being in a hot moving truck, the sticker probably got stuck in the box. Unpacked so much I wouldn't have thought to look. Thank you again for the video! These are my favorite style, though I have many styles. Only have eight Mille or so at the moment.
