The Sutro Baths was a lavish public bathhouse built in 1896 by Adolph Sutro, a former San Francisco mayor and entrepreneur. Located near Ocean Beach, the complex featured seven saltwater pools, a massive glass structure, and amenities like slides, diving platforms, and 500 dressing rooms. At the time, it was the largest indoor swimming facility in the world.
The baths struggled financially due to high maintenance costs and competition. Eventually, they converted into an ice-skating rink before closing in 1961 after a fire destroyed much of the structure. Today, the site remains scenic ruins within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, offering visitors a glimpse into San Francisco’s opulent past.
