Atelier Arenas at Rancho Flor del Cerro
Mexico
Приєднався 17 вер 2008
These videos are about our lives here in Mexico, and my work in the studio. Far too many sculptors come to a dead stop because making sculpture isn’t easy or cheap and then stops being fun. It can get hard really fast when you’re paying a foundry, or unable to pay for firings. That’s one of my reasons for elevating paper mache to a fine art form. This method is an innovative, inexpensive, durable, lightweight, technique of laminating paper into plaster molds which I hope helps you to continue loving the process of making sculptures. And, I hope you enjoy the scenes of our dogs, and our Rancho in Mexico where we work, with a window onto Mexican life for an immigrant. Sculpture by Diane Louise van der Zanden at Atelier Arenas on Rancho Flor del Cerro in Colima Mexico. Check out my sculpture, mold making and paper mache playlists for more videos from other artists.

FINE ART PAPER MACHE SCULPTURE-this is the "My Guardian" sculpture
My 30 day goal is to finish these two sculptures! Well, that didn’t happen, so the next goal is: finish all the big sculptures before July. The next step is to put together the feet and legs on tope of theses paper mache branches. This video shows my quick, easy and satisfying paper mache technique that allows you to create high end sculptures. These branches are part of the "My Guardian" sculpture that I'm working on for my show in November, 2025. These two sculptures are called My Anchor and My Guardian. I use authentic Venetian mask making techniques in paper mache, a method that I've adapted to make hollow, inexpensive, durable, sculptures in plaster molds with craft or recycled paper and pva glue. You'd never know that it's simple paper mache! I hope that this'll help you enjoy your creative process, make fewer mistakes and ease and change your art life!
You can see the many introductory videos on my channel, including the series about how to make a Venetian mask, start to finish, and how to make a 3 dimensional sculpture, starting with the paper parts. The Diane’s "Pride", series.

DON’T DAMAGE YOUR MOLD or sculpture with the wrong mold release.
Hi, I've been bingeing on your videos since I discovered you a couple of days ago. Thanks for sharing all your tips! Just wondering if you're worried about the threaded rod rusting after a while and possibly cracking the sculpture? Or are they galvanised? Also, have you ever tried using compressed air to get the paper out of the moulds? I've used it on plaster moulds, but never tried paper mache. Happy New Year from Australia.
Thank you so much! I haven't had a problem with the threaded rod rusting. Once the sculpture is dry, I try to keep it dry with the wood stains and polyurethane coatings. The sculptures also don't seem to crack once they're finished. So far, anyway 😆 I haven't tried compressed air. My next thing is to paint a mold with polyurethane and see how that works. I have all the parts for the 18 sculptures, so it might take me a while before I try that. Happy New Year Richard.
Happy New Year Diane…! Oh soooo nice..to watch your awesome Show…!
Happy new year Dan! Thank you so much 😊
Always such a pleasure to watch you and your husband create beautiful things! Happy New Year! May this year bring you many blessings 🙏🏻
Aw, thank you! And the same for you in 2025😃
Excellent work Diane, and bery inspiring.
Thank you sweetie ❤️❤️❤️
I love it all! This past month I melted down and altered cheap colorful children’s’ oil based clay to make a neutral color with the textures I want, since Roma plastalina has become unaffordable. This is so exciting!
Good! Whatever works. Keep me posted on how it goes 🙂 And thanks for watching and commenting. 😃
100 percent on board. Thank you. Robb.
Aw, thanks so much Robb 🙂
Love your work.❤
Thanks Robb 🙂
Good for you❤Robb
Yay‼️ Thank you 🙂
Love your work. Have been looking for a new way of making larger art pieces other than clay. This looks like the the way to go. Im so excited. Thank you so much for sharing your tech to be able to do the things for my work. Robb.
Happy to do it. Thanks for letting me know that it helps you. Keep me posted 😃
I just found your channel and love it!
Oh, thank you so much! ☺️
Love your video! I am going to watch the other ones as I have just discovered your channel! Thanks for sharing your process, so inspiring.
Thank you Fred 😊
nice and beautyful video
Thank you Sofi. 😊
Hi there, have you tried using a dremel tool with cutoff blades and sanding barrels or stones to further finish the flange and subsequent scarring? I know it’s noisy, and will throw some dust, but it would save your wrist and fingers!
Hi Kim! A multi tool comes into play in this video. It's so much fun 😃
Thank youuuuuuuuu Diane, for showing the process... It helped me a lot. I was with headaches on how to continue making sculpture financially accessible to me. See you next year. Happy New year🎉❤
By the way... I am portuguese, and living in Portugal 🤗😃far away from México. Thank youuuuuuuuu ❤️
Thank you, too‼️ Happy New Year 🎊❤️
That's so great! Did you know that I learned this process from a Portuguese mask maker? He was making venetian masks. I didn't even speak Spanish then, much less Portuguese,😂🤣 But I watched the video 10 times and I got it! Feliz Ano Novo🍾🥂
Really 😳 UAUUUU.... That's it😂, we are conected! Happy New Year dear friend 😍 ? Feliz Ano Novo de 2025❤❤ ?@@atelierarenas
Do we get to watch you color one?
Yes! I'm waiting a bit to make sure that they're completely dry and will probably stain a few at a time. Before it starts raining again. 😀
Where will you be showing?
Right now, I'm planning to have the first, promotional show here at the house. We know a number of art dealers and I hope to meet more before November. We'll film it when it happens! 😜😁
It's still great progress. Chin up 😎
Aaah. 😃 Thank you Christine ❤️
Merry Christmas Diane….and family and friends 🎉❤ 🎄 Beautiful….. absolutely beautiful…..
Thanks Dan! Merry Christmas to you, too 🎄🎁⛄
من هم برای ساخت مجسمه هام وبرای بعضی از قسمتهای از قالب گیری استفاره میکنم و البته برای ارماتور گذاری انها را جوشکاری میکنم.👍I also use molding to make my sculptures and for some parts, and of course I weld them to install the reinforcement.
Yes. One day I want to make concrete sculptures using the old molds. 🙂
Which country do you live in?
I live in Mexico, but I was born in the USA. I met my Mexican husband in California and we moved back to where he was born.
Thank you for your attention! I live in Iran. The only thing that doesn't matter here is the people. I work for a sculptor in cement, Russian clay, pottery, and recently papier-mâché, which is close to your style.🌹
I'm sorry to hear that. I have a good acquaintance in the USA from Iran. He also love to make sculptures. It sounds like so much fun to work with all of those materials. 😃
Dear lady, your work was interesting and I enjoyed it very much! I am also a sculptor, but in my country it is not given much importance. I wish I was closer to you and could use your abilities. Thank you.🌹
I'm sorry that it's not given much importance where you are. What materials are you using? And can I ask where you live? Thank you 😊
Diane, instead of washers have you ever tried a T-nut,it’s like a nut that has a washer already, and the washer has spikes you can pound with a hammer into a pre drilled hole into plywood.the t-nut sinks into the plywood and acts as a nut.You can make small ply wood sections (circles,or what looks like a wheel and put them on the rod inside your sculptures parts…….that can connect to the paper. You wouldn’t have to do all that build-up inside on that washer. You’d cut some say 3” circles out of plywood,or whatever your inside dimension is.drill a hole in that center…..put your treaded T- nut in that hole and pound it in with a hammer. Now you can use that instead of a nut and washer…the edge of that wheel will align with the inside of the wall of your sculpture….
This sounds like a great idea. Maybe it would avoid some of the shrinkage that I'm getting. ‼️ Good, good 😃
Absolutely Great Diane….! 🥇
Thank you 😃
Love your videos and your works of Art Diane…! Soothing and a real stress reliever…..editing and music 🎶 Are all so beautiful…., I’d like to do Michelangelo’s. David ….after seeing your process I can envision creating a Apoiio and Atlas or some other classic figure. Venus and Mars…! Thank you so much Diane. For your inspiration through your art and such a kind and inviting personality. “Yay 🎉🎉🎉”
Your comment means a lot to me. Thank you Dan 😊
ممنون بابت فیلم اموزشی شما بانوی عزیز ❤👍🙏
You are so welcome! I love it that I can reach people who are so far away from me and who speak different languages than me. It's so exciting to have you see my videos! 😃
2:10 next time clamp the base to the table it would be much easier to work when it doesn't slide around. Best regards
Oh yes. I see! 😄 That would have been a smarter idea. Thanks. 😉
❤ Just love your videos! Thank you for sharing. ❤
Thank you Tom. I'm enjoying myself very much 😃

How absolutely beautiful Diane….I’m flabbergasted at what you’ve done. All these figures are great sculptures, and your wonderful videos are very inspiring . I enjoy watching them,I love all of it,so much great content in them. I praise you for all you’ve done. 🥇
Thank you Dan 😊
It’s looking good, thanks for bringing us along
Thank you and it's my pleasure 😀
Yay, it was so cool to see your studio and process, and the work coming together!
😊 Thanks Carrie 😀
I like the look of the sealed brown paper….it kind of resembles wood. Your sculptures are beautiful, and your narration through your films Really makes them interesting and fascinating……. Such a beautiful place… creating beautiful works of Art.
You're so sweet to say that Dan. My eyes are wet. 😊 The wood look is so beautiful. And they feel like leather when I'm pulling them from the molds. I wish I had another lifetime to experiment. 😄
Organic Engineering at it's Finest 😁
Hahaha 🤣. Thank you 😊
It’s fun to watch your videos……
Thank you Dan. I really appreciate that. 😊
Wow! You never cease to amaze me. I could watch you create your art for hours and hours!!! Every step fascinates me and brings me joy. Thank you again for sharing. ❤
Oh, wow, thank you so much. You're so sweet to say that. ❤️
Where are these going to show?
I'm planning to have a promo show here at the rancho and then send them traveling. They'll probably start here in Colima and move through Mexico. This is my year of creation and hopefully, fruition!
So happy for you…. What an accomplishment. I’m an artist ,but I’ve had to work for a living and that’s a shame. I hope to have my studio/shop again someday. I admire you very much,
Thank you Dan. I also worked for a living for most of my adult life. It IS a shame to not do what you love most and the world needs us to be artists. I also hope that you get your shop again. 🌤️
Beautiful work of art 😍💕...Im confused....you mentioned not cutting into pieces the original plasticine structure, but then what did you use for the mold making 🤔? Thank you for sharing 🙏🥰
Thank you ❤️ I think what I was trying to say was that I would cut the original plasticine into far fewer pieces than I did. ✂️😆
I used the plasticine and made molds. I plan on showing that in an upcoming video.
@atelierarenas thank you for replying 🙏 ☺️. ... 😅 I thought for a moment that you made a mold out of the whole clay structure, and from the copy structure, you proceeded to make tiny ones 😅😂....
@atelierarenas Im so fascinated with your art 🥰. Can't wait to see upcoming video
Thank you@@sangueguerriero9538 😊
I have studio envy. What a wonderful space, inside and out.
Hahaha. I know what you mean. I still have larger studio envy 🤭
I just discovered your videos. I make much smaller molds and castings with Hydrocal for restoration work. I find it it stronger and harder than plaster and never had a problem with it coming out soft. Depending on the weather and how large the pieces are, it may take an extra day to dry thoroughly. Have you ever used it on any of these larger molds?
Hi. I used to cast sculptures in hydro cal and hydro stone. What a beautiful material! That makes sense, but unfortunately it's not practical to get it shipped to me in Mexico. Part of my challenge is to work sustainably with easily accessible materials 🤷🏼♀️ Sometimes it's an annoyance 😆 Thanks for your comment 🙂
Very impressive technique, also cute dogs ❤
Thank you 😊
I was always afraid to mess with using plaster... i loathe wearing gloves when being creative and i always thought my school art teachers said don't touch plaster with your hands, but couldn't quite remember why (if it was chemicals or heat reaction), but i see so many people via youtube touching wet plaster with their hands, so I'm still confused about it. I once messed with a cement mix with my bare hands and they became so dry that every little definition in my skin cracked and felt like paper cuts and sandpaper for at least 2 weeks. Still watching. Love seeing your process. Your sculptures are grand.
I've made molds of people with plaster. It's quite innocuous, but it can get very hot at the end of the curing. It can burn, but only at the end, somewhere around 20-45 minutes after mixing. Cement, on the other hand is caustic. Bad for your lungs, skin, anywhere you get exposed. I hope you'll try working with plaster. 🙂
Thanks for joining me in putting together sculptures for the “Holding Up the Sky” show.
Perseverance should be your middle name! I love that while sharing your process you also show things that don't work. So that doesn't look easy, but it still looks possible. And the legs looked great both as they were being formed with plasticine and as the first casting came out of your new mold. Kudos!
Yeah, lots of faults but perseverance is my strong suit. 😂 Those legs were really fun to make despite the bad plaster. Thanks Anne. ❤️
Amazing.
Thank you 😊
I Love that you share your process, thank you!!!
😊 Happy to do it!
This is so cool...and, inspirational, thanks!!
Thanks! It's my pleasure 😊
We know about linoleum acid from linseed oil turning acidic and rotting canvas over time. A google search turned up-“Vaseline (petroleum jelly) does not turn acidic over time; it is considered a neutral substance with a pH level close to 7, meaning it is neither acidic nor alkaline, and its chemical composition remains relatively stable even when stored for extended periods.” More likely your paper will turn acidic over time unless you buy buffered cotton paper. The oil stains might be useful as mark making one day.
So good! I searched many things but not Vaseline. Need to search mineral oil. So far, in 10 years, the paper hasn't acidified. In 40 years, it might 🤷🏼 Thanks. 🙂
