Hey everyone welcome back to It's Track Time! In this video I'll be comparing one of my faster laps to a hot lap from pro driver Randy Pobst. Randy Pobst Pushes Porsche GT4 RS To The Limit : What Did We Learn?

Hey everyone welcome back to It's Track Time! At the June Chin track event I found myself sharing a garage with racing champion Randy Pobst. My family watched Randy turn hot laps and break track records for years with MotorTrend. If he didn't approve of the car we were looking at it was tossed from our list. His opinion of how my car handled on track was therefore of the utmost value to me. He ...
Porsche GT4 RS chasing optimal lap time at COTA : The Frustration!

    Enjoyed this one. Driving Spa and the Ring are bucket list items. His comment about the traction circle and easing on steering input instead of pedal (at the limit) is prob some of his best feedback. You drove the car on its "toes" after that, as it should be when done right ;)

      @ItsTrackTime 6 днів тому

    • @hamsterbrigade
      @hamsterbrigade 5 днів тому

      @@ItsTrackTime I'm sorry for not being more clear. I'm talking about skipping Porsche entirely if your focus is lap times and track duty. I'm talking about an actual purpose built race car without a chassis that has road going requirements. Those vehicles don't have all the road going requirements and weigh a ton less(cheaper running costs). If the chassis is straight you're fine, you can pay someone very little money to rewire them because there aren't a lot of electronics. If you're shy about buying a used race car, you could always buy an Atom 4 for around 100k. You'll get double wishbone front and back and I'm sure it's faster than a GT4 RS and quite a bit cheaper to purchase, run and maintain. Of course if you want a Porsche, then buy a Porsche, I don't see any issue with that but there are much cheaper ways to go fast around a track.

      Ah, yes this is true. I have studied some of these and would consider them if there was a large community with a solid knowledge base in my area. Most of these alternatives put you on an island where you have to debug issues yourself or with remote resources. I don't want to lose track time over a simple issue that I can't diagnose and fix. At least with Porsche you have a huge community and a dealership in every town.

I have gone to Speed Vegas / Exotics Racing a few times, most recently in a GT3 RS, and had fun seeing my times come down. I don't think I'd want to challenge Randy in my own car, too risky! Minor feedback on your excellent video: I didn't know you were on COTA until I scrolled down to the comments. So if one takes your advice and starts with a light weight momentum car on the track, to learn how to drive and handle the vehicle really well before building up to vehicles with more HP and greater down force, what would you say does the roll of transmission play ? For instance, would you say it’s also beneficial to learn how to drive a manual on the track very well, even though eventually moving up to higher performance cars virtually all will be standard dual clutch, pdk, etc ? (Like from GT4 to GT3, GT4RS, GT3RS). I love driving manual on the street but not sure if I need to be learning how to drive on the track in a manual and should get a track specific car with a PDK or otherwise from the start.

    • @ItsTrackTime
      @ItsTrackTime 8 днів тому

      It's much easier to drive a PDK on track than a manual but every car I have, except the 4RS, is a manual. I started on track with a manual and if the 4RS offered a manual I would have purchased it. You won't be as fast with a manual but you will feel a lot more connected to the car.

    Traction control makes a huge (negative) difference. The car will be pulling power out of the corners to maintain traction. All driver aids need to be off on track for advanced drivers. That alone could make up 2-3 seconds on a track with so many corners. Then avoiding curbs would make a difference too - longer paths, less “straight line”, will lead to slower exit speed. Brakes need to on/off too - other than trail braking, feathering the brakes is almost always slower - you wanna brake as late as possible, at the edge of losing traction. Yeah, smoothness is important, but I always feel like you also need to take the car by the scruff of the neck and feel your way around. Simulators are great, but I feel like most simulators can’t teach you feel.

    • @ItsTrackTime
      @ItsTrackTime 8 днів тому

      Great set of clear points that I need to incorporate in my laps - Thank you. I agree on your simulator comment as well. They do help to learn the line on new tracks but don't give you the "seat of the pants" feel that you need to drive on track.

    I did a track school thing at Mid-Ohio in my 2022 Camaro SS1LE, and on the second day had one of the instructors/racecar drivers take me for a few laps in my car to compare. They are SOOO much more aggressive with the curbs. I was pretty proud of myself for only braking about 50 ahead of where the pro was, though highly doubt that guy was even doing 9/10ths of what he could do and I was at about 100% of my current skill.

      Yep you can learn a lot from watching these guys and having them in your car is an even better learning experience.

    Great comparison. Very entertaining. So basically, you have room for improvement at every turn on the track. 😉🤣

    not bad for a 67 year old guy!!! Randy is legend but like others you looked quick

      He went up Pikes Peak this year in less than 10 minutes with few or now practice runs - last minute driver swap. Definitely a legend.

      This is a good example of how they differ but you need a car that can stay composed while doing so.

    It's incredible how relaxed his hands are, sometimes his outside hand doesn't leave the resting position lol

      Yeah he's just running on muscle memory. Very low workload for him.

    Turn 11 is the most important corner on that track. He capitalizes on late apex to maximize straight-line speed

    • @ItsTrackTime
      @ItsTrackTime 15 днів тому

      Agreed, but his max speed on the back straight was identical to mine across the entire distance. He just cleared turn 11 faster than me.

    few comments: 1. thanks for doing this awesome comparison 2. the tighter line through 11 is the reason he gains time there 3. your simulator FOV is set too far back - that’s why you can’t see the apexes at COTA - it’s not realistic

    • @ItsTrackTime
      @ItsTrackTime 15 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! Turn 11 - I need to mimic his line and see how it works for me. Sim FOV - My three screen setup was done by measuring all of the dimensions and inputing them to iRacing. How can you tell the FOV is off?

    I don’t see why people use traction control on the track. You loose the car moving around which is a good skill to develop.

  • @learoast
    @learoast 17 днів тому

    You’re missing two of the most important traces. Throttle position and breaking points (and where & rate he comes off the brakes) you can be at the exact same mph at apex….(for example) he’s already flat….and you’re not. No criticism…just simply points of reference. Add to that he’s driving without any electronic interference. Traction control would drive me nuts. I could never wring 10/10’s out of a car with that on. But again….zero criticism. 4 seconds a lap doesn’t sound as significant as 4 seconds a lap X 20 laps. Great video. ps. I’ve read no other comments. Sorry if redundant

      Thanks for the comments. Agreed 4 sec doesn't sound like much but it's a lot over the course of a race. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can from a great data set. I did have a Solo2 connected to the CAN bus during both sessions. I'll pull that data next and have a look. I'm sure it will also be very interesting...

    with traction control and other assists, you will be slower in most places because the car is actually retarding acceleration in order to maintain stability. Toney Sterwart said once that comfortable is slow. Gotta be on the edge.

    • @ItsTrackTime
      @ItsTrackTime 17 днів тому

      Yep but the car needs to be sane before I do that. I'd rather have "quick hands" Randy do the computer off testing and tell me what needs improvement.
