    Is there a higher quality 1x30 available that one doesn't have to modify to make it well suited for sharpening? Not everyone wants to modify a tool to make it usable, or has the skill to do it. Are you considering getting a second 1x30 so that you are not constantly switching belts back and forth for the different grits?

    • @Samsmobilesharpening
      @Samsmobilesharpening 8 днів тому

      @@bwillan yes there are a few. The bucktool 1x30 is a great option. I don't have personal experience with it but I have heard great things. Only problem with that is it's not horizontal so it's up and down like the harbor freight 1x30. Another option would be the tolker 1x30. Yet again heard great things but no experience with it. another option but a bit of a downgrade is the worksharp ken oinon elite. I used the mk1 when I first started out. It wore out pretty quick though. Uses 1x18 vs 1x30 belts. And for the price the 1x18 dont do as well. Another solid option would be a 1x42 by Kalamazoo. That would probably be the one I would consider if I had to get another belt sander. 🙂 I have a second 1x30. but I don't mind changing the belts as opposed to setting up a second machine. But eventually might make a platform that I can mount 2 machines to that attaches to the talegate so I can just drop the talegate and get to sharpening. 😉 Hope that helps.

And worst case scenario if the belt is moving towards you and grabs. Could throw the blade towards you. But most people would say it disconnects from the blade and would not be able to. The question I would like you to answer, as someone who sharpens straight razors professionally, plus I also sharpen a fair few knives on my TFSPro I sharpen my Japanese kitchen knives with a 15 degree bevel and my pocket knives with a 20-degree bevel, I always set my angles using a digital bevel box, how are you setting the bevel angles, surely a permanent marker pen is not the correct way to do it?

    • @Samsmobilesharpening
      @Samsmobilesharpening 29 днів тому

      @@j.mahoney1178 If you are wanting to match the edge angle from the factory the sharpie method is hard to beat. But if you are wanting a specific angle. Tormek makes a angle guide specifically for knives. There is also a tool that comes with the tormek that allows you to measure the angle you are sharpening at. I'm personally not a huge fan of the included angle guide. But the one that they just released has me interested. But if someone is specifically wanting a knife sharpener at a certain angle I have my 1x30 for that. Then when I go back and sharpen for them I can use the tormek and the sharpie method since I have already changed the edge to whatever degree they desired. It's doable with the tormek but for now I do it on the 1x30 with a digital angle guide. I primarily have the tormek for repeat customers. Or clients that want a water-cooled edge sharpening. Does that answer your question? I know I rambled a little. But if you need a little more clarity I would be happy to elaborate.

    I struggle to get knives sharp with the edge pro apex. When I lay the knife on the table, I find it rocks which changes angle when the stone goes across the blade. I got the magnet add on but still the blade rocks too much to keep a consistent angle. Any suggestions?

    • @Samsmobilesharpening
      @Samsmobilesharpening Місяць тому

      @@kylefreemason I sounds like you are sharpening picket knives. What might help is instead of trying to magnetize and have the spine flat. You can magnetize the primary bevel where there is a lot more surface area for the magnet to hold. Then it's just the scratch method with a sharpie since the angles will be different than marked out. I'll try to make a short video on it here in a bit to see if it helps ya. 🙂

      @@gres7603 that is the winning question right there!!!! Glad someone understands that!!! When I sharpen I go to match the factory edge. Unless the person asks me to adjust it to do X better. @@Samsmobilesharpening In the army I broke a knife on the wet back of a tile. She shaved the hair off my arm. Then I cut a few slices of bread with it and it had no edge. Of course, I just measured it by eye, there was no machine. It is very important to keep the same angle along the entire length of the edge and to grind out the defects first. Many people don't even pay attention to the fact that the burr that occurs when sharpening is not the edge of the knife. It is also very sharp, but not the edge of a knife.

      @@gres7603 yep!!!! I remember when I first started sharpening. About 15 years ago and had that going one crazy sharp but I wasn’t truly apexing the edge. So they didn’t hold an edge very well. But I was also mirror polishing everything as well. Super fun. But I’ve learned a lot in the years I have been doing it. I always try to match the existing angle. That way removing as little material as possible. As well as holds an edge the factory deemed serviceable. Once they use it I can adjust to their needs. 😊
