okay so BASICALLY for this mashup, it's pretty flimsy but the souls, just like SONIC 2011, are the souls of humans put into the vessels of Sonic characters within X's game Xenophanes here however, is a special case, as he's the fusion of Tom in the Sonic vessel, and X himself, leading to the latter becoming what we see him as in this song (which is also why Sonic / Tom & BF fight against X in the Penta Peril section instead of Xeno) at the end of the song, X's spirit is vanquished from the disc, allowing the trapped souls to either live on within or to move on to the afterlife
