secret life of a corporate girlie | return to office, first PM meetup, work-life balance
hii! how was your week?
i feel like ever since starting my corporate job, it's been harder for me to make weekday plans with friends but i also think having after work plans is healthy for me! this week we went to a popup at one of my favorite pizza shops, my first PM meetup (i'm not a PM but maybe?? i want to be??), and they announced we're going to have be in office on mondays VERY SOON. sad!!

tldr of this week’s episode: know your worth, always negotiate, and if it feels crazy - you’re probably in the right ballpark negotiating is probably one of my favorite parts of the whole recruiting process. i feel like it’s an opportunity to ask for what i’m worth and when i get (some) of what i ask for, it feels rewarding I also recognize that talking about things like pto comes from a place ...

    First, big congrats. Second, I'd be very careful about having this content online as there have been plenty of stories of people getting fired or offers being rescinded when hiring managers have come across content like this. Especially when you mention that it would be a "second job" to you as your main job would be content creation. I'd strongly reconsider any of my own candidates or subordinates if I saw them mentioning this online.

    • @wangchristy
      @wangchristy 3 місяці тому

      thank you and i appreciate the watchout. i would honestly flip the conversation and ask why you would reconsider your candidates if they mentioned this online. many people have families and would consider being a parent their first priority and primary job. does that mean that they can't balance both and can't do an amazing job at their day job? no. i've also worked for companies that have channeled this mindset and i know my values don't align with theirs and it's something i actively screen for now. most of us have hobbies and interests outside of work and the companies i choose to work for value these other aspects.

    • @brotendo
      @brotendo 3 місяці тому

      @@wangchristy Before I say anything else, I strongly urge you to edit these videos and remove snippets/conversations of interviews. You're in California: any party in a private conversation, such as a job interview, has to be notified that they are being recorded. Otherwise, it's illegal to record, let alone share bits of that conversation publicly online. It's true that people have commitments outside of work that take priority--family is one you mentioned. However, I would completely understand if any one of my employees had a sick, injured, or dying family member to take leave. I would not be as forgiving if they take some days off or begin underperforming at work because of another job. Employers view UA-cam/content creation from those who don't do it full time as a "side gig." In many cases I've seen hiring managers avoid that mess altogether by just not hiring them. There is a prominent attorney that now hosts a podcast who was fired from his lawyering job when they discovered his UA-cam and didn't like it. This happens all the time. Circling back to you being unaware of recording/sharing conversations and the legality of them already shows the danger of saying content creation is your full-time job. Please consider editing.

    • @wangchristy
      @wangchristy 3 місяці тому

      @@brotendo I really appreciate the time you've taken to have this conversation with me and point all these things out. I've made edits to the existing videos. Thank you!

    congrats on taking the hard step forward into the corporate life again!! it's been really insightful seeing you go about this journey and i feel like there were so many moments where i felt completely heard and understood by what you were feeling or thinking -- im almost 2 years into my position and i still struggle with setting corporate boundaries because i always expect myself to overdeliver and exceed expectations for the sake of feeling useful and valuable to the team. but as my manager often has to remind me, my job doesn't define my worth -- and even though im likely going to continue struggling, i feel like as long as i make the effort to draw lines and make boundaries where and when i can, ill be ok. rooting for you and best of luck!! 🎉

    Do you mind saying what the exact name of your ticket was? I only see two options on their website: “Park” and “Palace & Park.” I am only interested in seeing the exterior of the castle (grounds) like you guys did. However, it looks like the “Park” ticket doesn’t include that at all and that I’d still have to purchase the “Palace & Park” ticket. I’ve looked everywhere for an answer and have yet to find a clear one…any help would be greatly appreciated!
