Camping Off-Grid, Below Freezing, on our Land in Scotland...and Finding our Septic Tank! | DAY 8 & 9
Something a little different this time, a little less action and a little more of us just enjoying life while being on our land. I hope you enjoy hanging out with us in these temperatures which definitely started to push our comfort while camping! However, we DO make the effort to find the septic tank, so there's a little exploring for those of you who are here for that.
ABOUT US AND WHAT'S NEXT:
We are Cam & Rachel (and the dogs are Odin and Heimdall), and we have been living nomadically together for the last few years. We always knew that we had our eyes set on more - and in the summer of 2024 our graft finally came into fruition and we had our offer accepted on a stunning plot of land in the Scottish Highlands.
So, what does our journey moving forward look like? We're going through the planning permission process to see whether we can build our own off-grid home in Scotland. In the meantime, vanlife will continue - with the prospect of a container home in our near future too.

Exploring More of the Land | Off-Grid on our land in Scotland | DAY SEVEN

I am sure that some of you may be relieved that the shovel doesn't make an appearance in this week's episode - instead, I swap it for a branch cutter and we get clearing the land. We have a lot of dead and overhanging branches around our perimeter, so we worked to clear them and basically just open up our walkways and view. It was great to see the land transform, and begin to enjoy a little mor...
Well... I wasn't expecting this? | Off-Grid on our land in Scotland | DAY SIX

The old O/S maps showed us that there was definitely a well here, back when the dwelling was lived in - so naturally, I was on a mission to find it. How incredible would it be to have our own pre-existing water source? It turned out to not be QUITE that easy, so join me this week for lots of digging, some mild confusion, and a (possible) well? ABOUT US AND WHAT'S NEXT: We are Cam & Rachel (and ...
It's getting fun now... Time to build some shelter! | Off-Grid on our land in Scotland | DAY FIVE
Переглядів 29 тис.Місяць тому
The weather forecast was promising snow, and with talk of weather warnings coming in to play it looked pretty definite. This left us in need of somewhere dry to store tools, and somewhere dry to sit and cook - so I got to play around with something fun. I've been a carpenter for over 15 years, so this is me back in my comfort zone (although I am still a complete shelter building novice), but it...

It has been a wonderfully crazy journey, and one that we are delighted to now have 20K of you joining us on. We'd been loving our time on the land so far, but it had become quickly apparent to us that we seriously needed some more tools. With everything we needed to bring for camping and the dogs, we didn't have room in the back of the truck for all the tools I'd have ideally brought - which meant that I got the pleasure of heading out to the local hardware store (who doesn't love a good independent h...

As you can imagine, we were in a ver celebratory mood when we first arrived on our land, which led to us drinking perhaps a little too much rum on our first evening there. Naturally, we woke up in the roof tent feeling foggy and slightly sore-headed the day after. However, as it was a weekend, we had plenty that we needed to get done. One of the jobs we have been most looking forward to on the ...

Raptor Painting my truck (...in 19 hours) to get her ready for visiting our land in Scotland!!

Where's the fun in doing things simply? Ever since I bought this truck, I wanted to use up the raptor paint and get her matching our mini fleet of vehicles. However, with winter getting far too close for comfort it became obvious that there wouldn't be much time left in the year for painting. SO, we decided to do it spontaneously over a weekend - with around 19 working hours to complete it, bef...

I really like how you are really showing the sheer amount of actual work that goes into doing something like this, and conveys the real reality of a project of this sort. I was looking into it myself, but you hit the nail on the head - Planning, bylaws, ordinances and such are so strict in the UK. It's sad that you have to prove that there WAS a habitation on the plot, and even then that only helps a bit - Even though your deeds show an actual house was there once. Keep it up guys, summer is around the corner!

Are you sure you have the full picture on the septic tank structures (including the man-hole)? The reason I ask is that the lower tank that you unearthed looks like it might be the secondary chamber of a two-chamber septic system. It would function very poorly as a stand-alone system but make more sense if that was simply the secondary treatment after the solids had settled out (and the floating component formed a crust) in a primary chamber. Is it possible that there is another chamber upstream of this one, or that the Man-hole is actually the access to a full chamber?

    • @livinginkevlar
      @livinginkevlar 3 дні тому

Interesting, I hadn’t thought of this! I’ll investigate more once we are back on the land. I thought most new septic tanks only have one chamber with solids falling to the bottom and the top water is goes to a soak away. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼

Is there not a second chamber to the cesspit? Ones I have known are double chamber. Dirty chamber filters through brick wall with no plaster jointing into cleaner chamber to settle before discharge. Septic tank also has chambers built in to filter water that is eventually discharged. I have also seen a further filter to really clean up the water from septic tank.

Lots going on! 😂😉 Shame that the cesspit/septic tank video was corrupted as that would have been some interesting content to keep the negative nancies happy. Who'd have thought a vlog style UA-cam channel has episode where it's more talk than action?! 😆 Rachel has more self control than me. I'd have tipped you out the hammock when going to get the camera. When you next set up your camp, shift your fire pit to the edge of the tarp and have the stone wall behind you at your back. This will reflect the heat back on you. Even better if you can stricken a wall of some sort facing you to better contain the heat. Pro tip from a Canadian winter camper.

I was willing my old army sleeping bag your way, but unfortunately that's not how it works. Hopefully you don't have a cold that would be horrible. Get outa there soon into a warm house. Yer amazing..grt to see yer love of yer land...and just to see ye stay there in minus degree's. Best of luck with the planning permission. Hope its approved quickly and ye can build yer cabin. Be great for yerselves and the dogs.

Beautiful land......I wouldn't be at all surprised if fairies or hobbits reside in the land! Gorgeous trees! Stay safe and warm guys. 😊
