400bhp Mini R56 JCW Cooper
Tuesday 1st October 2024. Back to Brands Hatch for possibly one of the last track days of the year. Everything that broke from the last TD is now fixed and running great. The weather was forecast to be 75% chance of rain for the day, fortunately it held off in the morning with just a light mist of rain coating the track. Not bone dry, but pretty good.
The mini didnt disappoint, turning in some pretty strong laps. I didnt have a lap timer (i do now) but the time stamps from the Go Pro suggest around a 56 second lap, two up and with virtually a full tank of fuel and as mentioned the track wasn't completely dry. As Misha would say.. "Driver excuses!"
Its a quick video, but i have more content to go through with hopefully some longer in car footage coming soon.

Tuesday 3rd September 2024 Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Everything started off well, sighting laps done and then managed around 7 laps before I lost all boost. A combination of things that led to that, and on some investigation this weekend it turns out some housing had split to the intercooler and the turbo studs need replacing. It's already booked for some repair work to be done at #1320mini

I popped into Brands recently and decided to pop the GoPro on the front of the car. Picked up some nice sounds. I'll need to invest In a better microphone to remove the wind noise as much as possible. But you get the idea.. she's a ripper. Out of the circuit, short shift to second, build the revs on a part throttle and then WOT for an angry sounding N14 to erupt! Love this car. Like. Comment. S...

Hi sorry for the delay in replying. This is a Garrett GTX2860r mated to a GMC Italy manifold and Deutschtech 3" downpipe.
what bov are you running?
It's a turbosmart atmospheric bov.
Stock map does plenty for the ears, no need to make it obnoxious. Sounds nice man.

Bro is your engine forged?
Hey mate, yes forged rods and pistons from Supertech. 10:1 ratio. Head is Supertech intake and exhaust valves, titanium valve springs, catcams. It's open deck still. Holding so far with close to 30k on it since the rebuild.
What app are you using on your phone?
Dash command. If you rotate the phone to landscape you'll get more functions and a rev counter. Being connected via Bluetooth to the OBD2 there is a small delay which for everyday driving is fine but on track you don't really want any. I used to have it in front of the Speedo cluster but removed it so I could use the OE rev counter. App now just for coolant temps and intake temps.

Thanks.. I wanted N14 GTX but that was already taken by a mate and then when he broke the car he sold the plate by which point I had this. GP + was the thinking 😉
What pink coolant are you guys using in that mini? That definitely isn’t the OEM coolant ( it’s definitely not a stock car either). I wish you’d give us a longer video than that.. I’d like to hear exactly what happens and then then probably a full video on how you guys fixed it. I think you’d get a lot more traffic on your way. R56 for life!!!
Hey thanks for the comment and feedback it's appreciated! The pink coolant is just a pretty standard OAT based coolant. Meant for more modern vehicles as I believe. It was recommended to me by a well known mini specialist in the UK (Millsys Autos) who builds other big turbo, high horsepower minis. It's from Halfords which if you're form out of the UK is a place that sells automotive parts. I'm by no means a videographer or "youtuber" but I do want to make better content on the mini and other things to do with Motorsport so it's in the pipeline to create better and more engaging content. I'm hitting the track in a week's time so hopefully will have other content to show soon. Essentially what happened was I split a boost hose off the cold side of the turbo to the intercooler. Melted for the second time one of my electric fans and lost all power. New GTX exhaust gasket and studs in, rewrapped the exhaust downpipe, had new silicone hosing installed and changed the screw in vacuum bung to a welded in boss and 3/8th npt barbed nozel. Slight re routing of pipework and a heat shield mounted to the back of the fan and all back together. Boost is back, and probably making more power than it has for a while as it feels way punchier. Just noticed you are using your phone for data, what app are you using?
That's Dash Command. If you rotate it you get to see even more data. I used to have to on a magnet on the dash binnacle but removed it because I prefer to see the stock rev counter for easy viewing. The app is great for a freebie, but the digital rev counter is a smidge slower than that of the stock rev counter. It's all Bluetooth dongle connected so it has a tiny tiny delay. But it's great to know intake and coolant temps on track. I ought to save up and get a proper dash display. More £££ 😂

This is such a bad boy little car. Just broke my r56 track car down, hurt my back so I've been off work for a bit so some things have had to give 😩 mostly car things 😑

Does it retain the factory boost control system (duty cycle pressure controller?)
It's still on the stock ECU so I believe it does retain factory boost control. Wastegate actuator is 14lbs. Turbosmart bov (atmospheric)

What exhaust are u running
It's a combination. GMC Italy tubular manifold, with a Deutschtech 3" turbo back exhaust with 3 resonators. Intake is now a K&N cone filter straight off the turbo. But in this video it was an ITG cone filter mounted up by the bulkhead.
Car sounds incredible
Thanks! This is an earlier setup now. Sounds similar, I've added another silencer since and downswept pipes as I feared it wouldn't make it on track. Passed noise regs Tuesday at 90db at 4.5k rpm at Brands Hatch so all good! 👍
What type of meter cluster u have ya?
Do you mean the digital dash? If so it's Dash Command run on my phone and connected to a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle.

Haha ok buddy.. 1) the big turbo conversion was just installed 2) this was years ago 3) it comes on to boost around 3.5k. 4) makes 370whp. 👍
Sold my 09 jcw clubman a few months ago. . Gone back to Honda and the k series engine but I did truly love my mini just to problematic.
If the N14 had the reliability and tunability of the K series it would be such a mega platform. Sadly it requires stupid amounts of money to make power and (ahem) reliability 🤣
Put in a sway but and u will have significantly better handling - especially around corners and high speed
That was one of the first mods over 4 years ago. It's an Alta rear ARB.
Are you running stock tank pump?
Uprated in tank low pressure pump from deatdeatschwerks. Think it's a 240lph pump. But I run extra fueling, 4x 550cc Bosch injectors in the Scara intake. Got all the fuel now and the meth is purely intake temps but not reliant on it.

Now I know this isn’t the standard mini Cooper setup so I was just wondering what kind of coolant you run in this monster? Did you upgrade the radiator? What brand of radiator fan was that and what size? The most important question is when are you going to move yourself and your tuning shop to Stillwater Oklahoma? This way I can “fanboy” over your mini in person😂
Hey! Thanks for the comments and kid words. I still run a stock radiator, and a pretty generic coolant. It's an OAT coolant and pink in colour. Just using something similar to a tuning shop I use that they recommended. The fan is from Spal. I believe it's a 10" fan and I have two. Haha if I ever make it to work in the US I'll come back to ya! Thanks again. Geoff.

It's a good idea if you're prepared to fix it when it breaks! Fun cars but they do have a high maintenance requirement
How much power is this build putting down?
Max boost is just under 24lbs (23.9lbs) and makes 371whp. So over 400hp. I've now added boost by gear in 1/2/3 with max boost in from 3rd.

Funny you should say that. When I went to collect the car I had to ask the garage to top it up. Paid and left and within a couple of miles the car was spitting black smoke and had huge hesitation. Two days later the head gasket went. Lost another couple of thousand to have it fixed from a proper garage. You live and learn. Fortunately everything has been good ever since.

I paid the price for not being more patient with who to go to, but I had sat on the parts for like 6 months and my preference was a further 3 months away. And by the time it was all done (it took this clown nearly 10 weeks) I was back to where I originally wanted it (Millsys Autos). He's a legend in the auK and done many big turbo builds.

Where did you get that front splitter from. With those wide fender flares, what size tires are you running front and rear? That R56 is VERY CLEAN! Respect from Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Hey thanks for the kind comments. The front splitter/bumper is from ABS Motorsport in the UK. But it's slightly custom as I made it wider to match the width of the front arches, which were also cut and feathered in to match the bumper. I run 245/40/17 tyres all round.

I'm not sure for that platform unfortunately
Why did you relocate the air intake?
At the time I was running direct port methanol injection. The airbox would be in the way. And because I had the Mac valve bolted to the back I didn't have space to relocate the header tank which is why it's not mounted up at the front. But it retains the stock air feed.

I think those were 235/40/17 Nankang NS2R's. I run Yokohama ADO08RS 245/40/17 now.

The N14 turbo is cooper s and JCW. It's also in some Peugeots and Citroens I believe.

It's holding 400hp no problem. It's had an LSD since the engine was rebuilt over 4 years ago
Looks like heat soak to me... Put a turbo blanket on.
That was nearly 3 years ago. Lots changed since then. It has a Funk Motorsport turbo blanket on. Plus methanol for intake temps, port Injection for fuel.. a bit of engine bay heat is no worries 👍

Ever thought about doing a detailed walkthrough video of the mini talking about the journey of getting the car to where it is now or just the mods it has on it?
I haven't, but I could do that. It's had quite a few incarnations over the last 4 years. Just in the process of changing out the front bumper for another versions that's wider in the corners to cover the tyres. I'll try and find some time to upload it. Thanks for the feedback 👍

Haha you know nothing about this setup. It has a cold air feed to the back, it isn't the hottest part of the engine, and it's intercooled and with all the fuel plus meth. Makes 371whp.. keep hating dude 😎

Nothing wrong with the engine, the map sensor was faulty. Hence why it was getting boost cut. 18k miles later, less than 2% loss on a leak down test. She's tight as a drum!
