Moorish and Fish in the Holding Tank.

Decided to grab a juvenile Imperator Angel fish while I was at my LFS. All is well with the Moorish and Hippo as well. Nothing really new going on with the systems. It’s just all about maintenance with stability. Peace ✌🏼
An aquarium for my Moorish & Hippo…

Just another aquarium for my fish really. Just more of a holding tank until something bigger comes along. I just love Marine Life and it’s cool. Didn’t cost me much. Had much of everything. Just piecing it together. Patience and Stability creates wonders…✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
A small aquarium build.

I wanted to save as much money as possible. Did not feel the need to detail out the aquarium stand. Kept it simple. Took me 4-5 hours to do all this. Now its ready for some life to go into the acrylic aquarium . Peace ✌🏼 to my fellow reefing hobbyists.

Over One year later how is he doing?
@@robdavinroy1761 It is doing great for being over a year in a 40 gallon holding tank when moved out of the bedroom tank. Very aggressive and eats like a pig. You can see in my latest video of the Moorish.
Simply stunning I hope my pair of clownfish live just as long as yours did. Good day sir
😂 Pronounced 'Bubble maige-iss'
Just saw two tanks fails today! Enough to not get a red sea tank!
@@UnMinutoViajando I wouldn’t go for a RedSea from that point forward either. The new replacement tank they gave me already is showing signs of concern
@@TheHerm14 I'm going for a waterbox tank
Does it pick at sps?
Yes. It started to finally pick at the SPS a short time after being introduced. About 3 months was good until it went for a green yellow tip coral and started to terrorize more right then. So I built this holding tank purposely to care for it until I get something bigger. You don’t need a larger tank to actually keep one alive. It’s all about a stable eco system and non hostile tank mates. Although the Moorish is now the hostile tank mate. Oh well. Very beautiful and fat and healthy guy.
RedSea strikes again!
Love the scape 👍🏽
Such a cool fish. Good luck Herm!
Thanks He is a mean one. Definitely nice to look at every day when home. Thanks again for your comment 👍🏼
How long have you had the moorish idol?
It’s going over 14 months now
@@TheHerm14 that's fantastic, do you feed much sponge or nori?
@@EC_Aquatic5 I do feed it sponge and nori every feeding. I only feed 2 times a day with Nori sheet in between feeding
How long have you had the moorish idol?
Hi, I'm also thinking of keeping one, can I ask how big is ur tank?
It’s just a 40 gallon SeaClear. You can get the measurements online. Just ensure when getting one. They have to have established rock with an established ready environment with moderate to low flow. They do not do well with intense flow like a SPS dominated system. Mix reef flow. Moderate to low. Look for a healthy specimen. One that looks curious in its swimming when it’s in the holding tank when you go to purchase one. That tells you it is less stressed and is a better choice for the move to your system. Good luck and the Moorish is such a beautiful swimmer
How is he?
It actually is doing really well. It is an aggressive one. Won’t allow me to place another tank mate in there. I am planning on getting a bigger system soon. To give it more space. As long as they are not stressed out; Moorish Idols do fine. You don’t need a large system for success. It’s funny that the majority of folks that give knowledge on Moorish Idols end up not even having long term success with one. Just saying. I usually sell them off after I get them to a certain stage. Aggressively eating that is. After I took it out of my bedroom tank display. Arlene my girlfriend talked me into building this holding tank for it. So I did. It has been fine ever since I tossed him in there. Moorish doing great and eating like a champ. Great immunity towards ick as it fought it off a few times. Hardy guy he is. ✌🏼👍🏼
What leopard is that?
I have. A Twin Spot and a Melanurus Wrasse in this video. Which are still with me today 5/5/2024
It looks like a lot of work to put that stand together, I am glad I saw your video, I was going to put that stand together with just a screwdriver, but after seeing you, I need a screw gun, Amazon I go.
What is your experience with the leopard and the flames? Interested in both for my new Reef upgrade
The leopard wrasse is a very peaceful one. Keeps the tank some what pest free. Mainly just eating copepods. The flame angel is doing to good. I was hoping it would nip off the little polyps off the rock work. It just swims around looking for other things. Doesn’t do anything to the corals. Flame Angels are a flip of the coin. It can start nipping coral, maybe not. But both are good picks for any reef system in my opinion
You change it every 3 weeks ? Why ? Chemi pure blue last like 3 months.....
From what I research in carbon alone. It doesn’t last long and needs to be changed out within 2 weeks to a month at least if you want it to truly do what it is meant to do to do. I run mix reef tanks. So that means more toxins and other sorts of what nots that I do not need circulating in my system constantly. For reinsurance and peace of mind. 3 weeks top is as far as I go.. my tanks are happy and so am I ✌🏼👍🏼🤪
Do you still have the Achilles? Beautiful fish -
I had the same going along my viewing panel I had 3 4 inch bubbles and 3 2 inch bubble all the way along iv had to shut it down and as my tank is year and a half old I got it when the g2 first come out I can say they still use the same shit silicone they used before
Nice tank we’re did you get the stands from
What parameters do u check mostly, daily?
I don’t check daily. I do weekly water test. Calcium and Alkalinity, Nitrates, Phosphates and Salinity. You don’t need to really do anymore than that. I do check magnesium once in a while. This info is for a straight fish only system.
Those look nice
Did this ever start leaking?
It did not leak, thank god… Was able to get my replacement tank delivered to me within a week and a half.

still alive?
Yes. I am looking at it now. About to put in a piece of seaweed sheet.
@@TheHerm14 hell yeah! That’s awesome
Can I take a quick poop 😂
I had to go 😂
I’m picking up a Red Sea 900, about 200 gallons. How long do you think I could keep one of these sharks in there? My lfs gets in small ones all the time. How fast do they grow? How active? Thanks!
They are slow growers and will stay around a feet long. Maybe 14 inches if there is more space for swimming. They are not to active. They love fresh squid. I used to go to the marina marcket to get fresh squid. No cooked seafood. Has to be raw for feeding. Take the bone like film out of the squid just pulls right out of the tail before feeding your horn shark. Your 200 gallon should be fine. Make sure you have no butterfly fish or certain too aggressive triggerfish. They tend to go for the eyes of any sand dwelling shark. So be cautious with the fish you put in. Copperbands should be okay around the sharks. Raccoon or golden butterfly or really anything else can be deadly for your shark. So just watch your tank mates and ensure it doesn’t hurt the shark. Don’t use anything to course for sand bed. Needs a smooth surface. Fine sand is good but messy. Just go one level up so not to fine. So should be good for tank size. Definitely not to active of swimmer but definitely cool to look at and it does swim from time to time. Hopes this helps. Also they like colder temps. So keep your tank around 75 degrees. All your tank inhabitants should do well at that temp
Nothing can see... Low light
I know. I had to adjust my brightness too.
wow, I'm in the middle of doing an upgrade in my man cave and i have enough. I only have one aquarium. lol
Looks great I just tested my 2x kes360x thinking I had good par was I wrong thinking of getting a couple of Red Sea 160s to help my tanks deep about 1/3rd deeper shows you have to test par I’ve been thinking I had a nutrient issue 🙃
Same thing is happening to my tank. I doubt they will replace it as I am almost at the three year mark. What a headache!
I to was close to the three year mark. Amanda honored my warranty with a new 525 replacement tank. Just have pictures and receipt ready. Sucks, I know. Hope things work out for you. RedSea is definitely not in any future buys.
Movjng away way from all redsea products non work successfully and the tanks aeem to be the worse on the market looking at upgrading and buying a waterbox
Assuming you leveled the doors properly when you built the cabinet, from the look of those doors it looks like your floor has sagged or the feet supports were not correctly set/settled
No. It was all built correctly. It sits on carpet. I always make sure things are leveled. The issue was just the tank alone. I was going to just keep the same cabinet after I received the replacement tank. But I said better to just put the new one in so there are no would’ve; could’ve; should’ve . As for the doors. You can just do an adjustment with the hinges and that’s it. Thanks for your comment.
I looked at your updated video where Red Sea replaced your tank. It’s comical that you were so positive that Red Sea wouldn’t replace your tank because of all the negative comments you’ve read from others posts. One thing I’ve noticed about UA-cam comments is that once someone says anything negative about anything it becomes accepted as truth and there’s just seem to make up stories to reinforce the tales. GOOD TO SEE THAT RED SEA REPLACED YOUR TANK. I hope you have better luck with it.
From all the negativity out there. I didn’t believe I would get a replacement. My warranty was already passed the time frame from when I purchased it. So I really doubted that I would even get a replacement tank. Amanda made it so easy for me and as long as the receipt was available; I guess I was in the honor zone for a replacement tank. I wasn’t confident at all. However things happen for reasons that I don’t understand. May the Force be with You 🥢
How many gallons is your tank?
The tank is the 525xl. It’s 112 gallon tank. But with all the rock work; I would say about 90 gallons of water
Moorish idol's are the most difficult fish to keep/survive. I wish you the best of luck. Hope he survives.
Doing great. I have had Moorish Idols in the past. Went through the trial and errors and figured out what they like and need to survive in any captive environment. First of all. They don’t like copper treated water. They need reef like conditions with stable parameters and temperatures. Non hostile tank mates, will get them eating soon if not eating already when introduced to the aquarium. Soak your prepared foods in Selcon for more enrichment of the vitamins and fatty acids needed for them to build a healthy immune system to fight off ich spots and just being healthy in general. Add sponge and nori to their diet. I have mine now doing awesome in a 40 gallon holding tank. Swimming with a Hippo Tang and a Emperor Angel. So beautiful with its long streamer. Nice fat and healthy. Not obese healthy where it can have intestinal issues in the future. Over 7 months now and knock on wood 🪵. Thank you for your comment
I still don’t recommend the Moorish Idol to anyone who hasn’t done their research on them. I feel bad in a way showing success with mine as I am not wanting hobbyists to just purchase one not understanding their needs first. I am not one to say it’s easy like some UA-camrs out their
Just got mine his pecking at the rocks is that a good start what size is your tank cheers mine 6 foot
how the clown trigger in ur tank?
Doing great. It does nip on some of the dead monti caps. Normal for large teeth eating fish.
It's not WRASSY, it's pronounced "Rass", and the angel is CRY-SEER- US
I also believe that due to variations in humanity. My pronunciation of how I speak varies by me being Latin and my vocal skills also needed some work with how I carry the words being spoken out of my mouth at that age. I promise to learn the correct pronunciation and speak more better so I don’t get scolded by my unknown language to humankind… lol Live life and prosper 🖖🏼🖖🏼🖖🏼🖖🏼🖖🏼
Found this video after my reefer 350 front seam failed in the middle of the night and all the water drained out. Tank is about 2.5 years old.
So sorry that you didn’t catch the silicon issue before the disaster. Request Amanda as your representative when you make a claim to RefSea. She helped me out and got me a replacement tank right away. Hopefully they honor your warranty. Once again; sorry for your loss…
Will do thanks for the info.
Exact same thing happened to me, but I woke up and I was able to catch the water after only a 1/3 made it onto the floor. Did you get a replacement?
@@wadewiththebraid Yeah it was really easy. I was outside the warranty but they still sent me a new one for free after a short email exchange. New one has a little thicker glass so hopefully that helps with this problem. The stand still didnt support the front tank glass so I built a custom metal bracket to support it. So far so good.
Look at him go after it all without hesitation 👏🏻👌🏻✌🏻
Yah… this one is a beast
Crap, just checked my 525 which is 4 years old. I have 2 spots where the silicone has air pockets. A 6 and 8 inch gap.
I would definitely now be looking for a new tank. It’s just a matter of time before the seals break. You should take pictures and let RedSea know of your situation
Man got a reef in every room 😂dope 💪🏾💯
Thank you. Enjoying watching your new videos on your new aquarium come to life as well CJ Thanks again
there is a vid, from gallery aquatica that mentions the "intended overhang" of the tank (by approx 1") on a 525 design on the front of the cabinet to have a flush 'pretty' look .... looking at misc vids of RS failures, this is common, and on corners not just long runs ... i mean you just can't overhang any part of these big rimless tanks, you gotta brace your big rimless tanks folks, at least Euro
I only go Eurobrace tanks from here on out
@@TheHerm14 Copy That Sir
Question for you TheHerm14. I am installing a Red Sea Reefer 200 G2+. Been hearing a lot of how people have issues with tuning it and the ATO constantly running. Have you experienced any issues with either your Red Sea or the ones you've set up for others?
You just need to dial in the flow with the valve. A little turn at a time should stop any gurgling noises. I would use a separate container for your RO reservoir. The provided one for your sump does leak and will some time keep running if the float valve sticks. External RO chamber and a Tunze ATO in my opinion is the best way to go. I set one up for Arlene. The 250 and it is still going strong
Is this guy reef safe?
It is to a certain degree. There are corals that they will not nip at or just try to make a snack out of. I did have to create a holding tank as I did remove my Moorish from my 525xl reef tank. So I would say with caution. If you are deciding on a Moorish. Good flow and pristine water parameters and non aggressive tank mates are essential to a stress free Moorish Idol. That way it will eventually start eating if not eating instantly on its arrival to your system. So with caution again if deciding on one. Good luck
@@TheHerm14 thanks
👍
Thank you. He was nice when I had him at the time. Had to obviously find him a new home. Hopefully he is still around in his then and now aquarium. I learned a lot on how to care for Marine life back then. For me my trial and error’s have made me a good fish keeper now in real time. Thanks again for liking.
What glass cleaner you use
Water. A damp napkin
He got hungry !
Yup. Now he is doing well in his own holding tank until I can get it into something larger in the future. Still eating vigorously… Thank you for your comment
@@TheHerm14 ofc ! I’m glad he’s doing well and eating but… jeeze ! He didn’t have to go out like that ! LOL
Thanks for sharing 👍
Red Sea tank failures leading to major leaks are happening to many people. I would never buy Red Sea. They are the Sears Craftsman of tanks, used to be great, now they suck. My LFS just had a huge store fire because of a Red Sea power supply...same thing recently in TX at a store.
We all learn from our mistakes.. Unfortunately it’s dealing with a so called reputable company. Not so reputable from our experiences. No more Red Sea tech products for me. I do like some of their supplements and salt is good. It’s their tech and tanks that are very cheaply made. Cookie cutter tanks
