POR15 BAD! I will NEVER coat anything in por-15 ever again! See why! VPT
Ive learned my lesson. I will never coat anything in por-15, chassis saver, or any "rust encapsulator" ever ever again! I believe it is THE WORST product I have ever used in my life. Come see why.

VPT FAB. I love the video man. I am doing a mustang 2 in my 61 falcon. This really helped me get plans in place. Its getting a chevy 250 inline my Gramps and i are building. Got a new Sub for sure.
I am glad it helps! Sounds like a great project you have going! I will be getting back to mine in a bit here hopefully! Been just to darn busy with everything else.
Fluid film. Im 28. Took me about 10 years of shitty products to figure it out. FLUID FILM is what you wanna use.
That's the problem. No rust to start with. It will not stick to bare clean or painted steel. It peels. There is a chemical reaction to rusted parts so it sticks. That's what you will be told anyway 😂
@@jordenb9469 Luckily with this truck there was three different types of metal that it was applied over. New metal, surface rusted metal, and completely prepped metal. All three had the same exact result.
the problem with any paint on coating is that they can only ever sit on top of the steel....once rust starts in even a small area it converts the steel to iron oxide which expands and lifts the coating allowing water to penetrate further along...it's a snowball effect.
@@michelle-lz8tg I agree! Por's brag years ago was paint over rust. With this truck there were many areas of brand new clean metal. Had same exact result as anywhere else unfortunately.
Poor preparation and application is not the fault of the product. POR-15 and any other similar product doesn't cause rust, but your poor prep work will.
Which part? The new clean prepped metal part, or the few years old clean prepped metal, or the just barely surface rust converted prepped metal all coated multiple times?
I get it in gallon pails cut it down with WD-40 and use the same sprayer. The temp of the day dictates if its liquid or solid. Usually spray it on the last hot days of summer. Use an old paintbrush to daub it in where i cant spray it. works really well.
00:12:12 This looks like the Toyota Tacoma frames!😂
I was wondering about that stuff, ive always used rustoleum gloss black in the quart or spray on , after wirewheel brushing the rust off and cleaning it. And that lasts a long time. Thank you for this info!
@@Broman-es4sx For actual painting I too use, like, and had decent luck with oil based enamels like Rust-Oleum.
Man thats bad! HAve you heard anything from the POR15 guys?
Yup, the typical scape goat, "did you follow all the steps". After sending progress pictures of the whole process there was no reply. I can only show people my experience. I don't care to destroy a company one bit, I just want people to know what can happen. I care about vehicles, not companies. 🙂
@@VPTfab Wow, spineless f-ers :(
Chassis saver is way better I knew to never use por 15, I always use chassis saver and fluid film
Spray wool wax it's a liquid undercoating I used for 7 years now. You got to spray it every year or two and you do not have to paint the frame
Never had any problems with por15 if you prep it right😐
The Wife and I just did this de rusting job on a 2000 F150 here in Southern Ontario Canada ,We used an air chisel , we dont own a lift but jacked it up the highest we could ,I then used a creeper while wearing coveralls and a full face motorcycle helmet , it worked great but very dusty , we then applied by brush a combination of no drip undercoating, chainsaw bar oil , and transmission fluid , that rear diff looks brutal
what i found works great is a 50/50 mix of varsol and 2 cycle oil...and you can spray it from a spray bottle.
Can’t wait to see the 1 year update. EDIT: Repair Geek has a nice 5-6 yearly update on fluid film
@@Hellcat71782 I will definitely post yearly updates!
I used it on a subframe restoration of a 98 civic and it held up beautifully but it held up terribly on the underneath of my brother’s gs300 so I guess its just luck🤷
This was my exact experience too. Never again. I peeled off what I can, and use fluid film every year now and also drive a winter beater during that messy/salty slush.
Respirator!!! The dust kills man!!
@@2smoker311 For sure! I didn't think of it or realize how much dust was flying around till it was to late. Will remember it for next time though and I do agree and recommend a respirator or mask!
I spray with used motor oil in the rust belt do it every year my frames mint
I've heard this too. But I tried it and it didn't work, at all. Fluid Film works.
I'm a fan of rust oleum n fluid film. However big question did you still consistently wash it
Constantly. Almost every time it came in off the road it got washed off or rinsed at minimum.
We never have issues with Por 15 here in Australia. Have it on a 1981 Falcon that we put on well over 10 years ago, and zero rust issues. But then, we dont dump salt everywhere
fluid film is a coating you put it every year but it works
Nice video, gonna try this on our new cars. Just welded a subframe of a 11 saab, had 3 2"in holes in 60k miles. But please get some proper ppe, gloves and respirators are cheaper than your body!
Fuck I've just spent ages refurbishing and painting my axels etc on my vw bus with por 15
what are the superior products instead of POR15 and other encapsulators
@@christopher6161 Just oil, fluid film, wool wax, blaster surface shield, anything oil based basically.
in Germany we have Rostegal now called Rottstocks Rostbindefarbe "Rostbondingpaint" stuff is amazing but i always put a wax film on top like fluid film, idk if you can get it in the US but its worth a shot!
Krown once a year.
I'm not sure why there's so much hype over por15. For the past 10 years or so I've been using a combination of an industrial type epoxy coating like they use on pipes and railing in mills and factories on the frames, and the past few years using fluid film in rockers, fenders, and doors. I'm glad you got to show what that crap actually does ! You try to tell people, but they still insist on using it 🙄
Your welcome for the salt. Also I did pro15 on my 90 that doesn’t see salt and it peeled right off
@@3minitruck POS-15 is poo poo
I think the best thing after applying that fluid film is to find some of the few remaining gravel roads and let the dust form the ultimate protective layer of filth.
@@mikeduhm5325 I agree! Luckily there is a gravel road only a block away from me. 🙂
Thats crazy. I believe Rust-Oleum,rusty metal primer applied to the frame without a top coat would have held up quite a bit better than that did. I don't have the answer but as proven that product is garbage.
@@mikeduhm5325 Oil, grease, and the like is the only thing I've seen that kills, stops, resists rust. Coatings are ok till there is just one single scratch, knick, crack to let stuff in, then they multiply the damage 10x+! Rust is literally the only thing that makes me want to move south. But I dislike hot weather too much.
Rustoleum is the same. What seals the metal is the same as what holds moisture in. Oil spray rust proofing is the only way to keep rust from from getting worse.
As a cheaper alternative that actually works i recommend Rust-HOleum oil based enamel in satin black and then coat yearly with fluid film and it works great! Holds up well!!! I learned a long time ago that por15 sucks! Great video to really show people.
Aces bro! --Doozer
I hate roadsalt. I felt sick 15 min. in watching you do all that work. I use fluid film and reapply every year. I don't do inside doors and tailgate every year. I could taste this video watching you spray it on.
@@CRAIGSTUD I absolutely hate salt and brine as well! Not only because of what it does to vehicles but the environment as well!
Always good to see people come back an re-visit products they have worked with in the past. Have you heard of other good results with the fluid film? Or any other reason you went with it? Hopefully the fluid film works better than the POR15, let us know in 7 years!
Fluid film is right along the same lines as spraying waste oil on frames/chassis which I have had great luck with. I will definitely report back probably yearly on how it is doing!
I can report now, because i'm using fluid film and it is great product.
Maybe next time try the technique where you just coat the frame in a heavy thick oil. Like chainsaw chain oil. I’ve seen some videos on the process.
Ahh, should have waited the video out. Yay.
That's what people typically do here in Belize, especially near the coast. The combination of extreme humidity and a very salty environment is terrible for vehicles.
It’s been known on forums for years that POR15 is worse than nothing. The apologists will just insist you applied it wrong.
yup, was looking for the salt-free fanboys to say did did it wrong, salt ruins everything, period
Very nice. I approve. I was just looking into doing this and thought I'd see if anyone else has done it. Lo & behold I find your video.
Balance gears aka "Grenade Gears" . From what i read and all the pics i saw of grenaded ones, id huck them too. (I have a 321 and 2 341's one is a rare 13fin industrial. ) I have heard others complain about not having them (grenade gears) but.. There IS another way to go! You then machine your crank and install a plate on it. Dont have the link handy atm, but could provide it if you want.. So far as i understand it, in basic terms, it was just weirdly balanced to begin with! It moves the ratio from something like 52 to 48 or.. I forget the numbers and not right up on the super tech part, but thats how i understood it, roughly. The ones i have..They are motors to go in machines that are almost rebuilt and i did research but not got that far yet as to do that and then run one.. "They" claim its the 🤔
@@cumulusvapes7 I read a ton on the subject as well. The problem with singles is there is no way to perfectly balance them. If you balance the crank to the rod/piston it will be good at tdc and bdc but will be out of balance at half stroke (90 degrees from tdc/bdc). Running the motor with and without the grenade gears isn't much different. But like I mentioned in the video there is a high speed vibration that resonates threw the machine and was making my hands go numb towards the end of mowing. Nothing terrible just an annoyance. A rubber mounted motor it would be no problem what so ever. I installed all new shafts and bearings in the grenade gears and reinstalled them. I figure if they lasted this long they should do another 30 years with all new parts. At least that's my hope.
Your character reminds me a lot of Derek from Vise Grip Garage
Thems fighting words!
@@williamstuples339 I can't help it. I do watch a lot of his videos so he is in my head and it comes out often. Lol

Is that a vF52 from a hatchback Subaru?
@@TordenPSM it is from a hatchback WRX!
Another interesting walk down random-project lane. Thanks. It amazes me how much stuff you do with only a single hand while filming. For example, reconnecting and securing the distributor. Are you left-handed?
Thanks! No I am not left handed, but having to weld with both hands all the time I have gotten better at using my left hand for things.
Been awhile since I rebuilt a K341 engine. Got one to do this winter, so I will have to be sure not to over bore the engine like you. I thought those clearances sounded large. Good recovery though. Where did you order your parts from? By the way, that flywheel stuff is part of Kohler's auto balance system.🤣😂🤣😂
@@cpcoark This was a fun rebuild for me. I do so much serious stuff for other people all the time I enjoy doing these something like this small engine for myself. Just glad the mistake was on my own junk and only a single banger! I got my rebuild kit(s) from a guy on eBay. 'Bakt4kids' to be exact. They are all aftermarket parts but do work. Honestly if I were to do it again, knowing my rod was in great condition I might have just got an OEM oversize piston and rings. But I am sure the aftermarket stuff will be just fine. Being a solid mount motor I am glad I decided the refurbish the balance gears and reinstall them. Without them there wasn't a "shake" but a higher "hertz" vibration. Would never notice with rubber mounts though.
Good catch ! Sucks that you had to do it over again, but I'm glad you got it figured out 👍
@@michaelzeinert2074 Thanks! Yes, sucks, but I am so glad it was on a single popper small engine rather than a V8!
Excellent work! I have a question, before removing the timing belt gears, did you align the points or did they already match up?
I did line up the marks before pulling the chain and gears.
@@VPTfab Thank you for your reply.
Man, all those lines touching the O2 sensors is gonna eventually rub a hole in something and or melt it because the exhaust is not stationary as you know it does move back-and-forth with acceleration.. I have the coupe C8 Z06 with the same cats and it looks much easier than what you did with the convertible although I ended up with about 15,000 bruises on my arms. Man you really got to watch where you decide to position the arms on your lift because these cars have very specific spots where they need to be jacked up because of being mid engine. Many have fallen off lifts. if you look under there there are little oval slots where most people install jack pucks. By the way, that car will get a check engine light because they all do no matter what FabSpeed or Soul claims. They do sound amazing though with the high flow cats, worth every penny!
I was able to get some tie wrap on those lines and pull them over to the side away from the o2 sensors. I cant believe a place charging that much for cats would overlook something so simple like that.
@@VPTfab Well I have/had the same cats… I actually went catless but I think I’m going to put them back on just because the sound is more refined. But damn seems like convertibles are much harder to deal with and there’s a lot of stuff in the way my O2 sensors don’t hit anything.. I am thoroughly impressed that you took that car apart not knowing anything about it and the damn thing actually still runs lol 😆
@@2020matrix8 There sure is a lot of junk back there! Not much scares me anymore for disassembly and assembly. Ive been doing stuff for quite a long time. If I do get stumped there is almost always a schematic or manual to reference. I actually like getting motors or cars in boxes and assembling them following shop manuals. I like the challenge. lol
Nice job
Thank you!
I'm doing this on my '79 f150/351m... jumped timing and is parked halfway up my driveway. And my first concern was "how many of my neighbors are going to watch me do this repair right in the middle of my front yard, and how many days will it take?" Thanks for the video.
Hell Yeah!!! Hey take the cats off if you really want your mind blown.. I’m catless with a Titanium Ryft. Maxes the DB meter out at 135 😮
Went with high flow cats on this one. That was the last video.
@@VPTfabYou probably know this by now but hey if you pull both paddle shifters in you can rev as high as you want because it temporarily puts it in neutral until you let them back out. I do this all the time driving down the road. Btw I love that burning smell, it def is. the exhaust blanks. Awesome exhaust build man!
@@2020matrix8 Thank you so much! Yes after talking with the owner mid way threw the build, he told me about pulling the paddles in. I didnt know you could do it while driving though! Thats cool!
@@VPTfab Yes I love that you can do that !!
So these convert the car into a Cadillac? Nice. Also, these cost 5K not 6K. After shipping and taxes it's around 5.5K. On Fabspeed's site it shows they're supposed to come with gaskets.
There were no gaskets to be seen anywhere. Definitely is a Cadillac now though. Haha
