Best Roads in Quinte Region - Marlbank Road, Tweed, ON
Best Roads in Quinte Region
This series will focus on some of my favourite riding roads around the Quinte region and Eastern Ontario.
Episode 1: Marlbank Road, Tweed ON.
This road interconnects HWY 37 (just south of Tweed) and HWY 41 (just south of Erinsville). Its 29 kms has many sweeping corners, s-bends and undulations as it weaves through forests, marshes, farmland, and passing through the villages of Stoco and Marlbank.
Here is a link to an interesting story about the excavation of an old steam-engine from Dry Lake in Marlbank... a long lost remnant of the towns mining history.

Thanks to my wife for filming from the pillion seat! (No, I still don't have an action camera!)

2011 Honda CBF1000fa Bike is hugely popular in Europe and the UK. Never sold in the US. Sold in Canada up until 2012 (I think). Bought this bike in March 2017 and just sold it April 2024. I put just short of 30,000kms on this old girl over this time she was in my care. Great bike, quick enough, comfy enough and dead-nuts reliable. I bought the bike with the OEM accessory panniers (mounted by pr...
An Africa twin with a 19 inch wheel just looks odd to me.. I have the 24 Comfort seat on my 22.. It's great, taller though.
Whatever your preference visually, it certainly rides nice.
Line-x the part..Might be easier ....so how bad is the buffeting for a 6-6'1 person....I heard it is horrible on highway speeds ? is there any truth to that ?
I can't say... I am only about 5'-9". Airflow for me is not an issue at all. No buffeting.
Did it come with the lock cylinder already installed or did you have to install that?
The lock cylinders come loose. You have to assemble and install... or have the dealer do it. If I recall, it takes about 30-45 minutes for the 1st one, then 15 min for the second.
I can’t find the sticker
@VirginiaATVRyders should be available through the Honda website or from your dealer... unless they are out of stock.
Bike is Frickin Awesome!!!
I love it!
I like your detailed review 👏👏
Thanks. This whole UA-cam thing is new to me. If you have any questions or want a video on something specific, let me know.
@ just make sure to handle the headache 😅. Hope you all the best 💙
1:35 can that one store a helmet ?
Yes, left side fits an XL full face helmet with comm... no problem
@ can the top box store on too ?
@@modahsadek4279yes
Maybe try Doral wrap
Did you warm up the engine to get all the debris floating and then drain it?
It was a while ago, but I believe I did.
Is there any other brand of plastic side cases that are compatible without additional anchors?
@@j.m.3666 not that I am aware of... but could be.
Thank you for your flawless video. Awesome work
@@nunocunha9900 ummm...definitely some flaws in there.... but thanks for the gesture! Cheers.
@@coolhandchunk no ones perfect fam, in my opinion you just lacked some brake fluid to clean a drop or two of oil rather than that Im pretty sure you made an awesome job. thank you for your sharing!
Nicely done. Your video helped me select the Honda "poly" panniers for my Africa Twin...which should be in my garage in a few weeks! Thank you for doing a nice review on all the luggage.
@MarksGarage17 thanks for the compliment. After nearly 5k, the boxes are still holding up well. They hold a crap-ton of stuff too! Makes commuting to work with my laptop etc very easy.
I have the same comm system, as well as the Cardo PackTalk and the upgrade to the system you have. Knowing what I know now I would pass on getting the Cardo. I think the sound, mics and noise cancelling are much better on the other units. Thinking about adding an AT AS to the stable, maybe next year...
I have the same gloves, they're great 😅
They are decent gloves... especially for the price. I find they have stretched quite a bit and are now too loose.
Super useful! I ordered one ATAS 2025. Now I can get used to the display and when it comes I'll be famliar wuth it! Thanks a lot!.
@joseramalho3362 enjoy the bike! The 2025 colours look nice!
Does the 25 AT have the gold rims?
Google africa twin simulator, thsrs a nice wee program that allows you to practice on the basic settings
Are they lighter than the aluminum ones? And how much weight do they add to the bike?
I dont know the weight of the aluminum cases for comparison. But here are the weights of all three cases: Top Case = 16.4 lbs (7.4 kg) Left Case = 13 lbs (5.9 kg) Right Case = 12 lbs (5.4 kg)
@@coolhandchunk thanks. I was contemplating the aluminum vs plastic ones. Plastic seems easier all around for installation. I think will be lighter as well.
Where did you find the decals for the side panniers? I just picked mine up and would like to find those decals. Thanks.
Ordered them from Honda. They are a standard accessory for the 2024+
Thanks for making this - doing 600 mi. maintenance today.
I wish the Honda CRF300L Rally had factory plastic bags.
2022 Manual ATAS here. AT seat is known for being uncomfortable. I have a neoprene Wild Ass Cushion on mine and it helps a lot. When two up I ride in User 1 because in Tour mode the throttle is way too sensitive and the bike pogo’s a bit when riding in traffic and backing off or feathering the throttle at low speeds. In fact in traffic I usually use Urban mode as it de-sensitises the throttle best, User 1 for everything else unless on the motorway or when solo I use Tour Mode. I have a Bluetooth unit from Amazon permanently plugged into the onboard USB socket. This way I have complete Bluetooth of Apple Car Play from my phone which I keep on my inside jacked pocket whilst riding. I went with Ohlins Rear shock and went for a Ohlins 110NM spring as well. Stiffens up the back when I have pillion. The stock rear shock spring is way too soft on the AT be it a basic suspension bike or the Electronic Suspension bike. Mine is a basic suspension bike for this very reason because I knew my Mrs would be on the back of the bike a lot and I had already learnt from another ES user that if your gonna carry two up with luggage, just go with the manual suspension bike and upgrade the rear end. Now the bike is really compliant and planted even two up. Not sure if you can make this mod on the ES version of the bike? I have the exact same luggage as yours. Much prefer the black boxes over the aluminium ones, particularly as there are no frames need mounting so when the boxes are off, the bike is nice and clean looking right away without scaffolding all over the place. Haven’t had any issues with scratches to the rear footrest hangars. I think your tape mod is a good idea. I do have some scuff marks on the exhaust heat shield from the Mrs boots rubbing on it occasionally. I have some Carbon Fibre looking sheeting and I’m going to cut a piece and add it to the exhaust shield around the rear foot peg area to cover up the marks and prevent it from becoming worse. I’ve also added Rox Risers to mine. 1 1/8 risers as any higher will require mods to the front brake hose. Means I can keep my arms straight and I don’t get discomfort around my shoulder blades like I used to. I’m 6ft 1” and 220 lbs. It’s also helped with seat comfort. Not sure why but I guess because I’m sat with my back in a more vertical position than before, the weight distribution down at my backside has changed making the seat more bearable on longer rides. I want to try a sheepskin on my seat, see if it works any better than the Wild Ass cushion. I ride with the seat in the lowest position. Even though I have long legs, this is a top heavy bike at the best of times. The lower I can keep the centre of Mass the better. On long journeys I have sometimes used the lower engine bars to place my feet and change position on my legs. I find it quite comfortable riding like that on longer journeys and motorways. These are great bikes. Like any bike I’ve had in my life, they always need to be tweaked a bit to suit the owner. I bought this bike to do touring with my Mrs and it’s been great for that and each little tweak I make, makes it better. Mines done 5000 miles now. Runs like a champ.
Those bags look great on that bike.
I really like these for all the reasons you stated their perfect. I really didn't want the frames. I'll have the wife paint the sides of my boxes with acrylics when I get them as she's an artist.
I got one of these but mine was 35 and says Africa Twin on it. Great little bag and its just perfect for a bottle of water and a few nick knacks also i put the insurance and registration documents in there but within a little removable wallet as the whole thing is nickable. Takes two seconds to throw it in a lockable topbox if leaving the bike for more than a minute.
@jag1963 mine is holding up well. Sometimes I have to play with the straps to keep it from shifting. But, for the money, it is just fine!
I just brought my bike identical to yours home tonight. This is very helpful thankyou. Coming from a Goldwing DCT I was disspointed to see that there is no accessory mode so that the whole time i am playing with these switches the headlights are on and draining the battery. Makes me feel like I am on a timer. Ive ordered a battery tender that does Lithium Ion but until it comes I shall limit my time messing around in the numourous setting available for this bike.
@jag1963 I have spent 20 minutes playing around and had no issues starting afterwards.
The Adventure sports have the so-called Comfort Seat. It is the regular version that has a lower and harder seat and if you replace it, you get the adventure sports seat. I have the normal bike and I got the Adv. Sports seat as replacement. Slightly different shape and foam, slightly better but far from comfortable.
Please let us know if you find an appropriate comfort seat as I have just ordered this bike with the so called comfort seat extra upgrade. Many thanks from the UK.
UPDATE!!! After comments on this video and my post on the "CRF1000L & CRF1100L Africa Twin & Adventure Sports" FB group page, I did double check and compare the foam colours between the original and Accessory Comfort seats.... the original was indeed 'yellow' and the accessory seat had 'white-ish' coloured foam. So, perhaps they are different afterall. I decided to try out the new seat... 350kms today... and still not great. The new seat was more comfortable for longer... and the pain in my backside was different. More like an overall pressure pain everywhere (kinda like a burning sensation)... whereas I find the original seat has defined pressure points that become extremely painful over time. So, yes, it is better than the stock seat... but still not great. Is it worth $150 CDN? Maybe.
Greetings from Greece. Can you please check if they have any differences on the other side (bottom)? I read that the comfort seat has different foam color. Thanks!
See my pinned comment. Yes, they are indeed different colours.
Congrats mate. Looks stunning. Been considering the same to be my 2nd bike. Waiting for the dealership to bring some down and I’m taking the plunge. Thought I’d go basic with clutch. But decided now for the Adventure Sport “24
It really is a fantastic bike. It handles very good, plenty of punch for the road, and (other than the seat) is very comfy.
I think the comfort seat has white foam of much higher quality
Yes, white foam. It might be a little better....but still not great.
That is a fun road. I used to ride between Petawawa and Trenton a fair bit, to change things up I would take different routes whenever I had time. I rode most if not all of the roads between Hwys 37 and 41 at one point or another.
@@Sasquatch_by_Day Marlbank is the best of the bunch. Moneymore road is fine as well, but a lot more houses and it's quite straight.
@@coolhandchunk One of my favourites that we called the "Flinton Bypass" was to take O'Donnell Road off Hwy 41 outside of Bishop Corners to Flinton. At that point you could either go back out to the 41 at Flinton Corner or what I preferred was to continue south on 29 which comes out on 41 just before the turn off for 37. That was over 15 years ago so I have no idea what those roads are like now but they used to be a fun ride.
@@Sasquatch_by_Day coincidentally, that will be my next video! Yes, that road is still fantastic. It is a bit rough from pot holes and asphalt repairs, but the twisties are still epic. It is fully paved now, but back 22-25 years ago, sections of it were gravel.... I did my best to pay homage to Colin McRae in my Subaru Impreza!
Thicker foam has never been the answer for me, a wider (and usually flatter) seating area with stiffer/denser foam for more support on the edges has always been the seat upgrade that works for me. Thicker, softer foam gives the illusion of more comfort but only in the short term. Once it gets compressed it's actually far less comfortable than what most people consider to be hard seats. Too bad this didn't work out but at least you can return it.
Bummer the new seat didn’t end up being any better. But look forward to seeing what you come up with cause it’s definitely not a cushy seat.
I recently tried using the seat in the high position and found it lets you sit a little further back and massively improved the comfort for me. Probably not as good as just a softer more comfortable seat, but definitely better than the low position, with the obvious tradeoff that it’s taller.
When reinstalling the seat, I, too, installed in the high position to give it a try. Great minds think alike! Haha
I did try the high-position today. I find it too high and changes the geometry and my reach to the bars too much... actually resulted in some minor back pain after 350kms. The high position is more comfortable for my legs though. Going back to the low position.
How do you know the foam isn’t different on the comfort seat? It can be a firmer foam that you can’t tell by just pressing down with your hand.
The seat was supposed to be 15mm thicker.... with 8% more supported area for your butt... there was no mention of different foam density.... hence my conclusion that this is likely the same seat.
See my pinned comment. I do think you are correct, they are different foams.
I haven’t found a good seat for my BMW 1250 GSA yet. I’m on my 3rd one. The oem seat feels great in the showroom, but after 30 minutes it’s painful. I tried Sargent, now I have a Touratech.
Thats some beautiful luggage. I am having the the Center stand fitted too. It's a must have for me.
What’s the stickers part number?

@@coolhandchunk Thanks!
I have a request : can you weigh one empty container ?

Beautiful job, they look the business, all those frames are generally awful loking, those boxes are nice n tidy
I don’t own the AT but on the Transalp, the power you have set for “P” is the lowest setting. Is it the same on the AT?
Hey, this is wierd.. Had the 2024 atas since launch now and the topbox passanger back rest have never fell off, the black paint on the pillion footrests is not wearing as yours, and min have 6700km now. I hope like you that there is some winddeflectors for the atas soon but not likely.. Have a nice day and enjoy the great bike :) Greetings from Norway.
@eastman79 thanks for the feedback. As for the paint wear, I am sure that it is likely more the result of my son not being careful getting on and off the bike. With the backrest pad.... I installed myself. I wonder if the dealer installs the pad they use a different adhesive or employ some special prep knowing there is a potential issue. Or perhaps the adhesive on my pad had degraded from storage???
@3:54 get some 3M adhesion promoter and get automotive 3M tape...it will never come off.
