Pheasant Back....the reason I now forage. I saw one growing on a log that was in the neighbors yard. I've always loved mushrooms but knew nothing about identifying or foraging them. They are just pretty to me. So as I was taking a picture, the owner came out and started talking about it. Said there was a guy that came by a previous year and said he thought it was edible but wasn't sure. The owner looked to me for answers and I, as a manly man, started telling him things I knew nothing about. he offered it to me and I refused it (ugh). i went home and identified it on my computer, saw that it was an edible mushroom and when I went back, it was gone. This stand alone incident led me down the rabbit hole of mycology. I forage most ALL the time now, but will always be chasing that time I saw a perfectly good tasty mushroom and hesitated at harvesting it. Haunts me in my dreams...lol. I will find one again some spring day ❤

Ingredients: ✅ -4 cups chokecherry juice -4 cups sugar -½ cup lemon juice (optional) -½ package powdered pectin (.875 ounces) Extraction Steps: 📝 1.) Use ripe chokecherries, wash in cool running water. 2.) Place in a stainless steel or enamel kettle. Cover with water 3.) Bring to a boil and then simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until soft. 4.) Cool and strain through cheesecloth or a damp jelly bag. *A pound of chokecherries will yield close to 2 cups of juice. Syrup Instructions (Next Steps): 📋 1.) Combine ingredients and boil for 2 minutes. 2.) Remove from heat and pour into hot, sterilized canning jars. Seal with two-piece canning lids. 3.) Process using the boiling water bath canning method. The time in the boiling water bath varies by elevation. For Midwest, it is 15 minutes for half pints or pint jars. NOTE: When extracting juice from chokecherries DO NOT crush the seeds. These seeds contain a cyanide-forming compound which can cause illness or death if eaten in large amounts. Chokecherry recipes often mention crushing but this procedure should not be followed. ☠️ ⚠️

    • @michellecobb8403

@landdrip It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I purchased seeds online from either Michigan Bulb or Burpee. The seeds are miniscule, so perhaps try growing in starter pots. I gave some to my dad, and when they came up the next spring in a pot, he almost threw it in the compost because he thought it was a weed. You may not get flowers this year, but definitely will the next. They are so bright and beautiful, you'll not regret it. I've also been able to dig them up easily and transplant or share. If you direct sow, make sure to mark it because they can resemble a weed. When they come back in the spring, they are very low and tight to the ground. Good luck and enjoy! Edit I forgot to mention that I now just sow my own seeds every year. I haven't had to buy any since.

If it’s growing on a farm or along a pasture, goats, cattle, etc are known to graze on it. It’s likely deer eat the young shoots, though it often grows along busy roads, which I’d imagine reduces this likelihood.

The ultimate plant-plague as it's roots dig over 1 meter deep and any tiny piece of rhizome missed (1 cm is enough) will grow into another plant again, even from that far beneath the surface.
