VTOL Transition Test Fixed Wing RC Plane
Переглядів 4572 роки тому
Testing quick and low Vtol transitions starting in hover there is 6 seconds between starting outbound transition switch and starting the inbound transition switch. Forward flight was approximately 3 seconds. Transitions while wings are banked at steep angles also works.

    I built this 8 x 4 ft model road layout for custom made 1/64 scale vehicles steering by guide wire under the road surface and magnet steering mechanism similar to Faller Car System. The clear acrylic road surface sheet has the guide wire tapped under. I recommend the Faller paint method as it is easier to add repair modify or alter roads junctions etc. The front of the vehicles have Hall Effect sensors to stop the motor drive and solid magnets on the rear of vehicles to trigger the vehicles following.

    This 1/64 scale model village and custom made self driving vehicles was built by me in 2022. The vehicles steer similar to a faller car system with a 0.6mm wire placed under a 0.1mm thin textured black vinyl road surface contact material to move tiny magnets on the vehicle steering mechanisms. The traffic lights circuit board also move servos with solid magnets under the roads to stop the vehicles motors via reed swiches onboard or hall sensor inputs to micro circuit boards onboard that also control the speed adjustment. 2 or 3 way road junction turnouts have servos to direct vehicles to different road circuits activated either by manual switches or automated Arduino microprocessors to trigger servo drivers for precise calibrated alignment to slightly move the guide wires 5 or 10mm under the road surface. It gets very complex to design and perfect. I would recommend the painted road surface as per the Faller Car System method and not do the vinyl so you can add, repair or modify more easily, but it needs repainting compared to vinyl which might bubble up in hot weather if not professionally installed with correct adhesive. 8 x 4 ft layout.

    • @kingsleykronkk3925
      @kingsleykronkk3925 Рік тому

      VTOL models require loading new firmware openaerovtol and its a rather difficult process and not always successful on all Kk2 boards and laptops. Pre-programmed boards with openaerovtol can be bought from only a few sellers online. Or you can ship yours to them for programming. www.altitudehobbies.com/products/kk2-1-5-lcd-flight-controller-openaerovtol-pre-flashed

    Man this is pure science.. Im trying to learn how to make my dream RC model. I sometimes dream about a high-end Vtol model since I bought the x450 from XK. But as I am learning, it seems the only controller I could go to would be that K2 or a Ardupilot. Which I'll grasp the knowledge quickly. Thanks for sharing

    • @kingsleykronkk3925
      @kingsleykronkk3925 Рік тому

      Rudder would need no special settings so just like a normal plane and it can work in all modes. My differential motor propellor thrust in forward flight (and tilting motors in hover) is more effective than a rudder that's why I don't add the extra weight as I found a rudder useless and removed it on an original model. Same with nose wheel steering, I now just have a caster swivel front wheel and the motor thrust is effective for yaw on the ground and in the air.

    1:27 min mark (motor / props stop spinning as when needed) sometimes when descending and transitioning inbound and powering off from forward flight to hover, and / or in a head wind the flight controller will momentarily stop one or both motor / props to allow it to descend according to your power stick input. As one wing or the whole wing stalls, one or more motors will instantly spool up to correct descent rate or roll (or pitch) rate due to it stalling. Fight Profile 7 (Openaerovtol on KK2) Roll P, I & I limit will stabilize the wing roll stall. I think my setting with the Z axis (P, I & I limit) 40,20,10 settings may increase or decrease rapid ascent or descent causing the props to stop spinning or spool up when necessary. It's rare in still no wind to see the props stop spinning but more common when descending power off into a wind as it is gliding near the stall and neutral on the Z axis (vertical ) not requiring ascent or descent. That's only my guess at what's happening. Higher revs 1250+ KV motors with lighter 2 blade props on 4s volts will give instant snappy spool up response to stabilize the hover in windy gusty conditions or rapid descents. Three blade heavy props or low rev 800 KV motors or low power 3s volts with cause a slow latency response or unstable oscillation or wobble when in a rapid hover descent or stalling one wing etc. The latency time response will be slow to spool up heavy props and or with lower volts and revs. But that set up is Ok for passive flying and slow descents and light to no winds. Also the tapered small outer wing tips on the low wing vtol are less affected by wind, whereas square or straight wings are more affected on their wing tips from wind lifting them.

    My Vtol Transition settings using Openaerovtol on KK2 flight controller. (You must research on RCGroups forums all the correct procedure and setup and settings as it gets complex) P1 = Hover, P1.n = mid transition, P2 = Forward Flight. In my Output Offsets (Menu 10) the Out 8 is the rear motor. There are 7 points in the offsets to increase (or decrease) the rear motor speed throughout the transition to maintain level pitch. All my vtols require a 7 point raised positive curve. Example only P1=0, 17,35,57,57,47,P2=0 So the offset of the motor will increase power automatically at the middle of the transition but decrease at each end. Example, when transitioning outbound the rear motor prop initially needs to keep the tail up until reaching mid way say 45 deg motor tilt then decrease the rear motor speed as it approaches forward flight airspeed and then it turns the motor off at forward flight so P2 = 0. When in hover the rear motor pitch trim can be adjusted for level hover in (Menu 7) Flight Profile 1 settings for Pitch trim. The front 2 motors need no settings. (unless the rear motor is underpowered then you could possibly use output offsets to reduce the front motors a little) If your motors and props are all the same and the front two motors are half the distance from the C of G compared to the rear motor distance from C of G, then it should have equal lift for and aft for equal pitch control authority. Depending on my models I usually have menu 2 Transition Mid set at 25 not 50 (Low = 0, High = 100) This means there is only 25% less hover control coming from the KK2. In P1.n mid position I have set the props closer to the hover angle and not at 45 deg. This enables me to hover in P1.n or mid switch flight profile in strong winds for vertical landings if needed. These are only my personal choices and others do not do these settings. I also have all the motors and props tilting forward about 7-8 deg in P1 Hover mid stick position so it maintains stationary in hover in light winds (5-10mph) (All transitions in or outbound should nose into the wind) Without wind it hovers slightly nose high but there is no wind to effect the wing attack attitude. All of my ailerons and elevator are always active in all modes P1 - P2 and the same % throws. ( Don't hover down wind) If you set the props level with the aircraft center line for hover it will need the rear motor lifting the tail surface up in a head wind hover (like a multirotor) creating a negative wing attack attitude into the wind (not ideal) This wind will push the plane wing down and then require more power to hover over one spot making it more difficult. Your wing attitude is fighting the headwind. There is no rudder or servo needed as I have set 20 + and - % differential thrust to the motors in (menu11) Output Mixer P2 Rudder volume. It requires pulsing the power on and off with rudder when landing to steer. (Like a jet ski) It requires no Nose wheel steering servo as it has a swivel front wheel and it will easily taxi turn around inside its own wingspan. I don't always use a test stand to calibrate transition settings with low wing Vtol's as I prefer to simply hold the fuselage so I can precisely feel the slightest pitching movements. (I don't recommend to any unskilled ninjas) If you follow this risky procedure I recommend you start transition tests at say 25% throttle and increase as your confidence gains while gripping the fuselage. Or get a trustworthy assistant to use the transmitter so you have 2 hands on the plane. It will still pitch very similar at low power so it's a quick easy test if you play it safe. Ask a question in these comments.
