Diesel Tach Calibration | First Gen Cummins
In a previous video I made about installing an Auto Meter Diesel Tachometer I made a mistake in the calibration process. This video is the correct way to calibrate your diesel tach with the tach adapter.

While under the truck and looking around, I noticed that the transmission mount bushings were shot. I found a replacement kit from 1st Gen Industries and decided to show you how I installed them. Even though the vibrations in the cab are increased with the new bushings, the truck feels more solid as the transmission is better supported and not wiggling around. Hope this helps! Okay, so what you do is take the old lights and google, which led lights replace that particular vehicle, year, make, and model. You just don't pick "whatever" at the store and expect it to work. Number 1 reason they don't work. Number 2: AND MOST IMPORTANT, identify the positive and negative connections on the dashboard, why because some lights are positioned positive on the top and the others, you guest it, positioned negative on the top. So, of course, again, they won't work. It's called: "pay attention" since you think you know what you are doing, but don't know what you're doing because you didn't do your homework and just ass-ume. Excellent on taking the instrument panel apart.
My rod is locked up how do you fix this
Is it seized? If so I like to use penetrating oil or heat to get something like that loose. Cleaning up the threads with a die if you can get at them might be worth it too.
still hoping you do an exhaust brake "how to" for the first gen one day. see if you'll need to swap out your springs to 60lb springs or leave the stocks. fingers crossed
I eventually want to but plan on doing a manual swap first and yes valve spring upgrade. Thanks for watching!
Great video, as always! For anyone doing this for the first time, please please please make sure your fill plug comes out before removing the drain plug. Very difficult to fill the diff from the drain plug 😅
Thanks! Lol
I'm wondering how you found such a clean 12v, especially in BC, must have cost two kidneys lol Gonna be using this video to put a tach on my 6.9 IDI, thank sir!
Thanks! Been a lot of work bringing her back but mostly right place, right time, and good people. Make sure to check out my second video regarding the calibration. I miss read the instructions in the first vid. Cheers!
I'd recommend getting a proper socket to torque that wheel bear nut. Also, manual locking hubs are a super cheap upgrade that will save a ton of wear and tear on your front diff and CVs.
Yeah I definitely should get the proper socket. Thanks for the recommendation!
De este tipo de camionetas de que año salen Mejor ???
I am a fan of the 1st (83 - 89) and 2nd generation 4Runners (89-95) for how they look and how simple they are. Some would argue their engines are not as good as the 3.4L you see later but I have had very little issues with the 3.0L 3VZ-E even though it lacks power. I find it difficult to fault a stock engine with 500,000 kms on it.
Very cool. So, you can get up past the dam? I was always told that it was gated and you can't get by.
There was a gate but it was open when we went. Not sure how it's managed.
194 bulbs
Great video, if you undo the LBJ the whole assembly slides right out. Just dont damage the boot on that trying to loosen it.
Awesome thanks!
I've owned this car for 11 years now and its a great amd extremely rare vehicle generally around the world i would say. Such a beauty to drive.
I wish they sold them in North America. They are really cool.
Where did you get those headlights
Hey picked them up off of Amazon. ua-cam.com/video/FKrJOkaGovg/v-deo.html Parts should be in the description. 👍
Do you not run the stock dust covers?
This vehicle is second hand and there weren't any dust covers when we made the video. If you have then you could try to use them with these bulbs. May require some modification depending on how they fit with the fan.
Hey will thise work in a 2007
Hey yes they should work. I would confirm with the vehicle selection tool on their website first though.
the best on hand video tutorial i had ever watched, and very detailed in each procedures and tips. 🫰🏻
High praise thank you!
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Thanks you made my job faster

Good on ya.

Had the exact same thing happen to me, had an alignment done and the car drives straight and perfect but the steering wheel is crooked. About to center the steering wheel and see how it goes, did centering the steering wheel affect the clock spring mechanism (where the switches behind the steering wheel is) at all?
Good thought but no it has not affected it at all. I'd have to look at the diagram to see if it would have an effect on it but with the small adjustment we made, it works fine.
How is the speedo cable holding up? Any more noise?
Yeah the noise comes back when the temp drops. Recommend trying a different lubricant.
@@roughcutsgarage try some chain lube. I'm hoping that will work for mine
Awesome thanks!
Need some help on knowing what to order for my car if i want high & low beams?
Is your car the same model and year?
Nice catch! 👍
You using Amsoil oil as well?
Yes, Signature Series 5W-40.
Awesome work! Definitely going to re-route mine or do that on ol blue when i get to installing one. That fumoto valve is also going to come in handy for future oil changes.
Yeah, the truck feels really smooth with fresh oil in her.

Are you going to film more rough cut videos? I love the content you put out
Hey thanks! In short, the Rough Cuts episodes are on pause since Tyler moved away last year. We hope to pick them up again at some point though.
just curious how many miles do you have on your runner? i just passed 200k with my 91 !
We have around 285k miles on ours.
Is gasket maker RTV stuff also recommended between the gasket and the valve cover?
After doing this job I don't believe it is required. The gasket seats into the valve cover pretty well. I haven't had any leaks so far since doing this job.
At 7:20, do you know what the button at the far left is for? The button right below the vent, to the left of the red light.
That's the clutch cancel button. Pressing that overrides the clutch pedal sensor and allows you to start the vehicle without pressing in the clutch pedal. Some folks have mentioned that in gear, they have used that button to move the vehicle using the starter although I have never tried it.
@@roughcutsgarage Thank you for the reply.
Can this fit on the 2x4 trucks. Not seeing much for them other than diamond eye
Unfortunately the company looks like they went under due to an EPA lawsuit. Their website says the exhaust is 4x4 only.
First time going to UA-cam and finding my fix in one shot! Thanks for the video!

Copper anti-seize.

Glad to hear it! Thanks for your support!
Hey, guy. Just an observation . Don't you think you will have more oil reading if you topup oil whilst the vehicle is elevated in front?
Topping up the oil with the front elevated gives an inaccurate reading on the dipstick for most vehicles. You don't want to overfill your oil as it will harm your engine. The most accurate reading is while the vehicle is level. Thanks for your question 👍
I have 93 T100 same issue. Any idea what a shop would charge for this- I’m in Portland, Or. Wish you were
I had this done by a shop shortly after buying our 4Runner about 4 years ago and it was I think around 600$ CAD if I remember correctly. Material cost isn't much but the time is the expensive part. Thanks! We love Oregon it's beautiful.
My 4 runner 2nd generation trunk didn't open, but the glass goes down
If the handle on the tailgate feels loose or you don't feel any clicks or resistance, I would check the linkages to see if they are intact. Had an issue on my truck where the plastic clips holding the linkages broke and you couldn't get the tailgate open.
I have a 94 and having problems in the same way need to flush everything out engine , radiator cause the last mechanic didn't do something right now I have over heating, smokie tailpipe . Thanks for this info I learn this for sure the difference valve cover gasket and seal gasket. I believe they didn't seal something up right cause I have a milky oil dipstick not Good . They told Me to bring it Back . Nope 😢 are they Crazy
Oooh milky oil dipstick sounds like the dreaded head gasket issue. Good luck with that!
Should have taken it for a wheel alignment. Next time you go for new tyres and wheel alignment, your steering wheel will be out again.
Haha funny you should mention that. Not sure if the previous guys did a proper wheel alignment because they were the ones that knocked it out of alignment in the first place.
Was this a 2.0 or 2.3 litre engine?
I believe it was the 2.3L.
@@roughcutsgarage Thanks 👍🏿. I have the 2.0L and it's the standard filter and not the cartridge like the one in your vid.
Great car
Yeah wish they were sold in North America.
my headlights don’t have a good coverage they are new why’s that? can i adjust the low beam light coverage distance.
That's odd, first thing I can think of is the daytime running lights I found flickered and are really dim so once the lights are on fully then they get bright. That could be the issue. Possibly they are the wrong sized bulb, the distance into the housing should be the same as a stock filament. Hope this can help with your diagnosis. worse case, I would contact Auxito and get the to replace the bulbs or maybe they have something on their FAQ page.
Torn CV boot at 7:00!
Thanks for the heads up. We have replaced both of them now. Appreciate it!
sure thing and cool video!
all good but i will recommend to to the cam plugs also. Good job!
Thanks! Yeah we had them done around 2 years ago when this job was done by a garage. Then it started weeping again so this was my crack at it. 👍
When taking the 22 mm Banjo bolt apart I noticed the edit, started with the pulley in place, then the pulley was magically already taken off. This is where I'm stuck. I need to get the pulley off before I can get a good hold on the interior pump nut. Pulley nut came of fine, I've wedged a pry bar behind the pully and banged on it, rotating the pully 1/4 turn each attempt, pully won't budge. Do I need some special type of "puller"? Once I get the pully off, I stand a better chance of getting those main pump line (banjo 22 mm) nuts apart.
Hey thanks for your question. When we made the video, we didn't have any manuals or order in which to remove the parts. After learning what had to be done, I figured I'd re arrange the clips in an order that viewers could follow to make the job easier. @2:30 is where I get the PS Pump Pulley off. If it's hard to remove, you could try penetrating oil. Worse case you could remove the fan and try to get in there to hit the centre with a big hammer. Thanks for your support.
Yes, I caught the few secs using the pry bar, kind of out of sequence. I had to use a jaw puller, it was a beast and slightly bent the pulley, but got it finally.
@@blairbossie2205 Glad to hear you could get it off.
@@roughcutsgarage Putting things back together and didn't see where a small brass half dome "union seat" came off. Fits perfectly on both the air flow control unit and the fluid control bolt - didn't see it when you took those two items apart. Do you recall running across that little critter and where it goes? Saw a diagram where a tiny piece is called a "union seat" and it connects to the air flow unit.
@@blairbossie2205 The little semi-circular piece was seated in a slot on shaft of the PS pump itself to fit between it and the pulley so the pulley wont spin feely on the shaft.
The service manual definitely does say 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 for the manual transmissions, (I just checked as well) but I've read a lot of information regarding the additives in GL-5 attacking the synchromesh material in manual gearboxes, thus I intend to use GL-4 in the transmission only. Although honestly, I think it's a little late for my gearbox, some of the synchros are a getting a bit tired. Thanks for the fantastic video! Your channel is similar to mine in many ways.
Yeah same story for ours. We are over 450,000km on it. At this point, as long as there is something oil like in there I think she'll run haha. I'll check out your channel thanks!
You had to trick the tack because you had it set wrong for the DTA, the tach needs to be in 8 cyl mod as the DTA emits 4 pulses per revaluation. It docent specifically say what to set the tach too in the instructions you kind of have to back your way into it. hope this helps
Thanks for your comment. Still a bit confused considering the instructions outline that for a 6 cyl engine, it says to configure the tach in the way I demonstrated. I take it you tried the 8 cyl mode on a 5.9 I6 Cummins?
@@roughcutsgarage if you were not using a DTA you did set the tach correctly, the tach instructions are for using it on a gas engine connected to the coil, when this is done it will receive half the pulses that there are cylinders per rev so on a six cylinder it gets three pulses per rev, the DTA outputs 4 pulses per rev (that's in fine print in the instructions kind of dumb) so the tach needs to be in 8cyl mode. Basically the instructions for the DTA trump the instructions for the tach. That's why the tach red 1250-1300 at 1000 rpm it had an extra pulse that it sees as more rpm. So by tricking it to read correctly at idle it's actually wrong everywhere else now. I have not installed one of these kits I came across this video while researching this product as I plan to install one on a Cummins as well. Hopefully this comment finds you well just trying to help
Ahhhh okay! That makes so much more sense now. Thank you! Definitely going to try it out. Might make a follow up video regarding this. Cheers!
