UE5 Fantasy Slasher Prototype - Halberd improvements
Clips from testing new combat improvements with a halberd. Fully replicated (multiplayer). Combat is directional based and attacks chained together (Left to right slashing, high attacks, thrusts, low attacks). Will be adding counters soon which will make a big difference. Changed camera position. Added hit markers and directional hit indicators (Bloody screen from damage location). Added attack phases (Windup & Release). Now characters are interrupted if they are hit during the windup phase. Both players and AI can feint during windup. Added the ability to "execute" characters on low health. Slowed characters general speed, plus slower attacking and blocking speed. Players must be looking at the direction of attacking weapon to block successfully. Added character VFX for when hit with fire or ice spells (Fire burns over time and ice slows or stops). Characters hit with heavy attacks are stunned for longer or interrupted for longer whilst blocking. General AI improvements.

      @@colinfernandez3D Thank you! Yeah all the blocking works based on the direction of the attacks. It's been improved since this video, I have some updates. I'm probably not going to be doing a tutorial sorry, but I'm using a plugin called Combo Graph on the unreal marketplace.

      Thank you for the kind words. I'm also a solo dev working on it by myself at the moment, but I've been using Unreal Engine, mostly as an environment artist for over 10 years. I would recommended checking out all the free Unreal content on the Unreal store and getting good assets from the marketplace during the sales. The characters are Metahumans which are free and most of the environmental scans are from Megascans which is free. But I've also bought quite a few plugins, animations, character and environmental packs during the sale. There are always massive sales during Black Friday about November time, sometimes 50-80% off. You can get a lot more work done if you carefully choose good assets/plugins, especially if you aren't a programmer or familiar with C++.

      Thank you, It's an early prototype I'm working on at the moment, It's not an MMO. It's a fantasy slasher, similar to games like Mount and Blade, Chivalry & Mordhau but with magic. There's a single player/ 1-6 player co-op mode in the open world with PVE and larger multiplayer battles modes (aiming for about 60 players/bots). In the co-op version there's some survival elements and dungeon crawling similar to something like Dark and Darker. Both game modes have procedural (randomised) environments to vary the gameplay. I also want to give players the ability to play as different races in co-op and creature/monsters in multiplayer.

      Thank you. Well I'm using a different hitbox system than what you have in your plugin. But there should be somewhere in your logic, where there's a "on successful block" and and you can "ApplyGameplayEffectToSelf" with a stamina cost gameplay effect. I have it where the attacks all have different gameplay tags. If the character is facing the direction of the attack weapon whilst blocking, there's a function with a switch on gameplay tags, that sends "SendGamePlayEventtoActor" with a payload to the blocking character/self. Each weapon has different corresponding blocking abilities. For example, if the attacker animation is a "high attack", each weapon has it's own "high block" gameplay ability. So when the attacker attacks high, it goes through the switch, sends gameplay event to actor (self) and activates the "Longsword High Block" ability. This ability simply plays the blocking animation and "ApplyGameplayEffectToSelf" (Target is ability system component) with the stamina cost gameplay effect. The "Longsword High Block" ability or for whatever weapon, has the same "Ability Trigger" tag as the corresponding Send Gameplay Event to Actor. The blocking ability doesn't have a cost as standard with Lyra - it manually applies the gameplay effect via the get ability system component (Get Lyra character from info). Not sure I explained that well, but I hope it makes sense!

    Hello, Your test is running very well, congratulations! What spawn system are you using for the zombies (NPC)? The "horde" is running very smoothly.

      @@matelovas4165 Thank you. I'm using a plugin called "AI Optimiser" from that unreal marketplace. But it works about the same with the standard Lyra spawn points.
