    Where can I find "felt wheels"? I am having trouble finding a felt wheel for the grinder. Maybe I need a different search term than "grinder felt wheel". I keep seeing compressed wool wheels when I search. Do I want compressed or something else?

    Excellent video. Question - how many pens does it take to go through a carbide tip before you have to rotate the carbide insert?

    • @TurnersTv
      @TurnersTv 4 дні тому

      A certain number is hard to say, as that depends on a lot of variables (what materials you are turning, how quick you are taking off materials etc) but I would say that when you notice or question that you might need or want to sharpen that is an indicator that you might want to rotate. Hope that helps!

    For squaring a blank before you turn, is there a tool that exists that is like a barrel trimmer, but that does not have a hole in the middle, so that you could just tap both sides of the blank and have both ends square quickly? I'd like to add some sections at the end of my blanks

I've done some 3D effect crosses using inlayed wood and poured resin -- this would work really well as an alternative to the wood inlays or the resin and would provide a very neat texture.

      He talks about that in the video and for sure you have to be very careful and mindful about it. I think his answer is yes there is risk, however, when you have bought something and are repurposing it into other artwork there may be leeway. That being said we are VERY careful about it here. There was also a fair amount of talk about it in the live chat which you should be able to watch back as well. I know that isn't a definitive answer but I hope it helps :-)

    Great video! When I tried method 3, I seem to get a surface that is not as smooth as it was after sanding to 400(cocobolo pen blank). The end result seems to have ridges. Maybe this is the gumming result you referred to by using too much polish or possibly not moving my rag enough. Any ideas are appreciated. I’m going to sand off and try again making the two aforementioned corrections.

      Carrie is really practiced at getting it even, so I guess practice, and if you have good magnifiers you can use those to see your work really well as well. And yes, after it is cured, we take it to the lathe to sand/polish, which generally doesn't take too much time. We use 400 and 600 fine grit sandpaper and then zona paper to polish. That's a shame that the tbes didn't work as planned. I was excited to see them after watching you pour them. Any idea why the red spread out so much on top, and didn't drag down through with the blue when you dropped the white?

      I spoke with Chad and he said that maybe he didn't use enough red dye or (most likely) he didn't shake the red bottle of dye enough before he mixed it in the resin. That being said those are the best guesses and it could be any number of factors lol. Sometimes resin casting goes sideways and we don't know why lol
