Proa "Proud Mary" - v2 - butt steering
Переглядів 7 тис.11 років тому
This video shows me steering a zig-zag course by weight shifting. It's a bit long and boring, but shows a few different boat reactions to more or less extreme steering. At two instances, just before and just after the shunt, I've steered it almost "in irons", and then bear off. You can see it is very fast pointing up wind, and a bit less keen the other way. I think this is partly because the am...

Proud Mary, home designed and built shunting proa. More on this playlist; ua-cam.com/video/EEMlJzDCEEo/v-deo.html Ply and epoxy/fiberglass, aluminium mast and yard. LOA 20', total width 8', hulls width 1', flat bottom shallow draft asymmetric main hull, no dagger/lee board, steering oars, Gibbons sailing rig with 9m kite as sail.
The construction of the sail is the same like at my boat.... I'm still learning a bit to handle it... it's fun when it runs ...
doesn't look like a very high performing sail for that much wind
That shunting set up is a great idea. I'll incorporate that in my next build. Good stuff. Thanks for the idea
Great idea on using a kite wing, has it served you well? Have you changed the rig at all since this was posted?
Exactly what I’ve been looking for
Слишком короткий аутригер , будут проблемы . Лодка будет тормозить , и маленькая длинна PROA
It is nice boat!!!
👍👍👍
Lotta lines on these shunting proas. I'm starting to see how they work...
Pretty neat on the shunt rigging. Whose design?
Good stuff more videos please
Are the amas and beams fixed with epoxy?
But what is Latina for? Why not a claw?
Because in this case the top becames tack every time the boat reverses course. Differentely from other praos.
Das gut.
do you steer using mast tilt?
A beautiful thing
what meter sail are you using??
where is the rutter ?
Great, simple boat. i think you win the award for most underappreciated vid here. :)
Hello, I'm working on a prao prety similar and lookk for blue print or sketch for the asymetric hull. Do you have any ?
More information in wikiproa; wikiproa.pbworks.com/w/page/67383621/Proud%20Mary and in Proafile; proafile.com/forums/viewthread/287/
Hi mate, Just a question, did you design her ? Does the sketch is available ? Mikaël
You are inspiring my friend. i have antes ocean kayak. and cant wait yo see your desaing working on it..
Is the lite "As-Is" or did it have bladders that were replaced by battens?
love the shunt!
good name for a boat
<3
nice one man!!! keep at it. all is flex.............
Have you weighed it? I've been gravitating towards a P5 or T2 partially because they are easier to get up-and-down the beach than my current stretched Ulua. But your low draft is appealing. Seems like your requirements are very similar to my own - including not sweating the windward performance that much as long as I can get home.
You're an absolute inspiration
good job gear box! that's a beautiful example of true sailing physics.... as for the rudder, forget that, CLR rules...... wish ya best of luck hope to see more of Proud Mary on d tube.
Thanks Tom. Just added link where you can find more information in the video description.
It is really a sweet setup. I would like to know more about the sail design.
Thanks Paul, it is good fun, even if I say so myself! I've been following your whaleback sharpie proa conversion in proafile forum, and think it is a great project, as it shows that not being happy with something doesn't mean that's the end of it. Everything can always gain a new life! Good luck, looks almost ready to launch...?
Very interesting, looks like a fun boat
Just registered myself on Proafile, waiting for confirmation. Surprisingly I just seen a topic on the forum relating to this boat, so will post some information there.
It should be possible to measure the leeway by comparing a compass heading to a GPS heading. I'd love to see how fast it turns from an off the boat POV. I'm sure that I'm not the only proa nerd that would like to learn more about the dimensions and details of the boat and rig. The Proafile forum is a pretty good place for that. I only ask because I'm already scheming away on my copy-cat boat ; )
I don't have any GPS data yet, except for speed (9.4knots max that day, not great wind thou). It seems to point almost into apparent wind, but not sure how much leeway... Will try to get a GPS, and I'll make a steering video as well when I can. Weight shift is not always minor, it depends on how fast you want to turn! Wa'apa looks very nice, and you'll have a guarantied performance if made by Gary Deirking's plans. I just like messing around and try different stuff!
Very cool! It looks like the weight shifts are very minor. I'd love to see a steering demonstration from an outside POV. How high do you figure you're pointing? Any GPS data? A dead run is slow anyway! I am building the foils for my 16' Wa'apa now and they're about the same amount of work that the whole hull was. I'm really digging the simplicity of your boat. best, chris
Thanks Chris. Yes, it is steered only by weight shift. No problem going downwind, but it is tricky to keep it on a run, as it very easily goes aback. I think the extra sticks common on this rig make it more efficient, but I never tried it. I have the sheets coming from the ends of the hull, thru a block at the clew and to cockpit, so it keeps the sheeting angle always correct. This proa is still a work in progress (my first boat...), but, so far, I'm happy with the solutions I'm getting to.
A moving or pivoting leeboard can be used to adjust the balance, which could allow for steering
I LOVE the simplicity of your proa. Are you steering entirely with weight shift? How well does that work downwind? Most gibbons rigs have a spar in the middle of the yard going to the clew--you seem to do fine without that. Very cool.
