Knapping a Basalt Blade: Day 3
Переглядів 940Рік тому
Sorry for the terrible filming! I work all over the place depending on the platform I’m hitting. The only part worth watching in my opinion is around minute 13:00 and 20:20. I did bit more vertical punch work with the antler off camera after filming. I hope to haft this one.

Flintknapping: How to Conserve Material for Beginners
Переглядів 10 тис.Рік тому
This video is for beginners learning how to conserve material. Flintknapping stone can be expensive, and so it’s nice to learn how to stretch out your precious pennies while knapping.
Making Haskett Projectile Points

Contemporaneous to Clovis, (and possibly even predating them) are the Western Stemmed Tradition. This culture is believed to be separate from Clovis, and was known for making different kinds of stemmed points. In this video, I shed some light onto the process of making the Haskett projectile point. Enjoy!

Awesome video
didn't think basalt could be knapped, but i guess if its silica content is high enough it works pretty well.
I live in wv mountains we have a lot of round sand stone in are trout streams
That obsidian is as black as a butcher's heart... Simply beautiful
What is a haskett?
I have dogs who are a pain in the butt keeping away from me when I’m knapping too haha.
G'day thank for the video. Yours is one of the first channels to talk about hammer stone hardness. Nice info. I am a retired stonemason and stone carver now days so been looking into the whole primitive hunting thing. My bad back puts wearing chainmail and armour out of the question now days, so sold off most of my HEMA fighting gear. some light weight atlatl throwing on the other hand is nice and easy.
Lol you almost dropped that “banana point” 😂
Please post a video of you working this material and going over damage control and thinning. Super Impressive. It’s very similar to salton sea obsidian which I’ve made some smaller pieces out of but nothing this big and this thin.
Someone got to teach Mike how to make a straight point!
Basalt is both fun and extremely hard.
Hey,were you at Letchworth 2 years ago.!!!!!
Yes I was!
Nice job with the video Zack! And Zalmon, no more free rock for you dude!! Great work guys!
Fine, no more free points for you
@@zalmonschultz3592 thats my brother!
I've been there... alb... My wife's great grandfather started that place way back when. Those points are fantastic! So many lithic materials.
That's a collection right there!
This is so crazy wish he made videos does Thanks for the great vid perfect!
Nice, Zack. Lots of great information and visuals all in one. Inspiring !
Wow! Dude does some amazing work. Im only 2yrs into the hobby but ive had alot of success so far. Working some Kentucky Hornstone and some Sonora rt now. Would love to have some of that green Franciscan chert. Ive only found 1 artifact made from it over the years but it's a nice Kirk corner.
Great vid! He must have some tough feet to be walking on those flakes barefoot!! LOL
He is an amazing knapper, always like seeing his post.
Cool stuff Zack! Great video
Nice rocks. I’ve noticed some chert has a high pitch ring, does that mean it’s high quality? What makes some chert better than others?
Make flintlock flints, you have good material for it.
What is the difference between franciscan chert and red jasper?
The shadows are fine i can see what you're doing just fine
You sho look like a professional to me!! I liked your video. By viewing this video, I can see how to make better platforms. Do you 10 or 20lb flint? I moved to Missouri in 2015, because my wife got sick & wanted to be buried by her parents. While here, I found lots of churt. But I can't find large enough rocks, just 8oz to 12oz. 30:29
What is the type of thing you like to make with basalt?
Hasket I just found one of your other videos
I was listening with ear buds and it was making my ears ring
Что за порода горная,... Роговик?
Man just the flakes and spalls off this lump of dacite are mouthwatering… beautiful material. I live in SW Montana and I’m trying to find some places where i can source this stuff. Looks like I’m gonna be waiting till spring before i get out to search now. The weather went to crap as I was getting ready to plan some weekend trips.
i live up in yuba co...great information
A house on Glass Butte? That'd be sweet!
Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
Very cool!
You either live close to an airfield, or someone is keeping an eye on people who are prepared to live primitive.😂
What the neck is an ergonomic flint knapper?
I suspect he meant economical, lol.
Flow striations.
Hello, I am watching your video and I need some of your beginners scrap. I want to know if I can purchase it and send it to send it right
There’s quite a few places to get your hands on spalls.
Great vid! Who was the knapper at the end showing you all his points with narrow notching?
Sounds like paleoman jim
Amazing. I kept cringing thinking it would break!
I really like how you narrate what you're doing. I'm learning a ton. Thanks Zack!
Stunning work! Such beautiful material - I love how quartzite sparkles
I always thought basalt was too difficult to be a knapping material - thanks for set6ting me straight! Beautiful work.
Your technique is unorthodox (quote from old Kung fu movies) I've never seen this vertical punch technique, great results! A lot of great skill brings great results though.
Zac you're going to be one of the best napping fools of the times considering mr.John Tuttle the best ive seen
I think we live close to each other I live in woodland this is making me wanna try to work with chert I’ve collected some at cache creek but could only find pretty small stuff
You kept every bit of the length!! So impressed with your accuracy man!
Very nice! Good commentary, like a good chess player, your endgame is always in mind "specifically built ridges to create better platforms", very informative!
Where is that particular rock from?

Remind me of a young Marty Rueter, and that is a compliment!
