Picking up Nick's Mazda RX7 FD
Переглядів 8266 місяців тому
Welcome back! Summer is over and it's time to get stuck in to uploading more videos! Back in February, Nick and I jumped on a plane and heading to Nelson to pick up a freshly imported Mazda RX7 FD. The trip involved jumping on planes, I 4 hour ferry ride, and 12 hours worth of driving! The car is beautiful and can't wait to see how good it will look once we have put our hands on it!

BMW E36's are so FRUSTRATING! Interior is keeping me on my toes!

In. this video I spend most of the time on the sunroof. It was a mess with all the runners and clips broken. Once it was up and running Nick and I replaced the headliner and put everything back in the car. She's getting there!
Tearing out the interior of my E36. Discovering an absolute mess!
Переглядів 511Рік тому
In this video I dig deep into the interior of the E36. The initial plan was to replace the seats and anything else that was broken. Turns out everything was broken... I love old cars, particularly old BMWs but the problem now is, even the good ones have been messed around with by someone at some point. I swear that every bolt, clip and fastener has been touch on this car. Most of them were brok...

The factory extended leather door cards have the seam running high up on the card and behind the centre cloth section, rather than at the bottom. This line then ties into a seam that runs along the bottom half of the dash board too. Not all the E36 doorcards have a centre panel which detaches either unfortunately - some (like mine) are one piece. Trying to track down a set myself so I can do the MRain cloth to match the rest of my interior.
Bravo Bravo Hvala
what gorrila glue did you use? Link?
links to adhesives that you used in this video? thank you !
Realy good job.thumbs up. But with just a few sewing seams it would give the vinyl a custom touch...
Thanks mate, appreciate it. I'd be the first to admit that I am no professional upholsterer. I wanted to get as close to OEM as possible and make it easy for people to replicate at home.
Finally , someone addressing those damn pockets that scare away even experienced trimmers! Subscribed
Thank you mate!
Looks great mate! Did you at one point ever consider using a steamer the water seems to stretch materials much better than the heat gun alone. Basically a trade secret 🤫
Nice upgrades, looks clean.
Thanks mate!
Been waiting for a new upload 🤙
Thanks George!
Nice wheels 🔝 Where did you got this lips ? Great video !
Cheers, lip came from the BMW dealership as they still stock them :)
@@thedetailformula7046 So it’s a bmw genuine part ok, thank for your answer !
Yeah it is. Part # 51112251767
Great channel 👌 Great source of inspiration, and as no professional wants to touch the interior of my car without asking for one of my two kidneys, this is probably how i will end doing it. Thanks for sharing ! Always said my 328is will be my coffin, if i would sell it, i don’t know what i would buy instead, and probably buy another one…😂
I went to a prfessional shop first and they wouldn't even touch it! Couldn't believe it. Next shop was going to charge over $1000 per door card....
Salute mate, First things first awesome job!!! I’m kind of in the middle of reupholstering my door cards too and I’m curious how much m rain fabric do I need for door panels and seats front and back. Will appreciate your help Much thanks! My car is 328i coupe just in case :)
Hey mate, the door cards used about 1.5m I'd say. At a guess you'd need at least another 5m to do the seats
Awesome job mate thanks for uploading ✌️
Very nicely and well explained! I was thinking though, what if you would cut out the holes for the pockets before you add the vinyl? Maybe then you can make it out of 1 piece? But I like your solutions aswell, it looks professional!
Thanks mate! I think cutting the holes might work but would be pretty tough to know how big they should be and where to put them. Pretty easy to make mistakes I think. Don’t know till you try it I guess!

NEED MORE VIDEOS MATE
I agree mate! Next week I reckon!
More! Finished watching them all over again. Great videos. Deserves more subs
Thanks George! I'm on it! Just got a front lip and another surprise coming! Keep an eye out!
On some vinyls you can peel off the cloth backing (with enough determination) which helps MASSIVELY with stretch. Maybe it would be possible to do the vinyl in a single piece like that. It´s been a while since I´ve had my door cards apart but iirc that´s how the oem vinyl is, no backing. The only downside I´ve found is the vinyl will tear when you go beyond max stretch without enough heat but it´s pretty easy to get used to.
Yeah thats a good point actually. When I removed to old vinyl there was no cloth backing. Thinking back, the cloth backing on the vinyl I used didn't seem like it would come off easily
@@thedetailformula7046 Yeah there´s different backings, I don´t think any are designed to peel off put some do. The backing is also what determines the stretch direction. Most are more stretchy in one direction than other. Your two piece design worked out good too👌
Thanks mate!
Where did you get the mrain fabric?
I actually got the fabric from Etsy. Seller was called Berry I think. I just found the foam backing was to thick but it was easy to pull off
Thanks for this, very informative!
You're welcome mate!
Hi 2 things where do I buy the aluminium door holders and is there any advice you can give on where to buy the vinyl

Hey mate: Vinyl - www.mollies.nz/products/2422823?variant=44523862393123
You can do the whole card from one piece I have done it but you need to carefully and patient
Yeah I’m sure you can but I struggled. After a couple of failed attempts I decided to go the 2 piece route and I’m really happy with it. It may have been the vinyl I used being not stretchy enough, not sure. Or just not talented enough! 😂
Awesome Job!!! Hope when it gets warm in the car the glue you use does it s job
Yeah I agree!
Great video good sir. Maybe I missed it, but can you link or point me in the right direction where to get the vinyl you used??
Thank you mate. See link below for the vinyl i used. www.mollies.nz/products/2422823?variant=44523862393123
I wodmee of there's a way to make thsi carbon fibre
Hey mate what dye did you use in the rear parcel shelf.
Hey mate, Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint
Do you reckon it would work on headliners as well as the rear parcel tray
It'll work but it does make the fabric a little firmer. I actually found it really easy to re-upholster the headliner and it's absolutely worth doing.
@@thedetailformula7046 sweet thanks mate just figured it be easier and cheaper as mine was redone only a year or 2 ago but in beige for some reason instead of black
Where did you order the carpet from?
Hey mate, carpet was out of a donor car. Really good condition but second hand
Great video. Where did you get the speakers?
Hey mate, they are just the stock ones. I think I’ll upgrade all the speakers at some point. After wheels and suspension though!
Grandioso. excelente el reemplazo por un material diferente y colorido.
Amazing detailed video bro. I just took mine out to reglue the plastics at the back to make them stay on door properly but now i think i need to do this while there off. Can you please share link to get rails for the top to connect to the door please. Cheers love content your chanels underated keep it up for us e36 lovers and owners
Thank you mate! Appreciate you tuning in! Link below www.ebay.com/itm/256010823063
I would’ve followed up with 2000 and 3000. Less heat to the paint and way faster process instead of hitting it 3 times with a DA.
beautiful car. keep going
Thank you! That’s the plan!

Cheers mate! Agree 😍
Another question sorry what fabric did you use for your headliner?
Hey mate, I got the fabric from Le Mans Auto Fabric in Wellington. Sent them a sample and they matched it.
Wow. U put in alot of love and work ❤
We try!
Hey mate, love the content. Just curious where did you get your m rain fabric from?

Hey mate, how much fabric did you use to do all the door cards?
hey mate, looking for the trim name for that lines the roof. the first rubber trim you put on, cant find it anywhere
Hey mate, the long piece that goes right across both windows?
@@thedetailformula7046 yeah that and the bottom piece actually, all I’ve found is the 4 door seals
Long piece is called the Roof Edge Moulding. Best way to find part numbers is go to realoem.com. Put in your car details and you’ll be able to find what all your parts are 👍
which vinyl did you use? the front door pockets are the difficult bit, i've been thinking of trying a leather look spandex type material thats super stretchy, but its hard to find with the right finish.
Hey mate, yeah totally agree. Struggling with the front door cards at the moment. Will let you know when I find a solution. I just used standard automotive vinyl.
That looks great. Solid work
Thank you, Yeah I'm really happy with them!
Hey mate, what spoiler is that? Looking for a similar one for my e36
Hey mate, it was an M Sport wing I believe? Where you located? I could probably give you my one. Needs repainting but it's just sitting in my garage collecting dust.
Just a quick suggestion; while you have the carpet out, you might want to pressurize the cooling system to make sure there are no leaks or evidence of past issues from the HVAC box. As you have pointed out there has been quite a bit of sub-par work done on the car and quite possibly there may be a few ticking timebombs left to be found. Ask me how I know… PS don’t forget the cabin filter. Cheers
Hey mate, that’s a great call. Really appreciate the comment!
Love your channel man, my 318is is needing a lot of work so these vids are so helpful! Thanks man!
Really cool man! Just the process of bringing your car back is awesome
This is awesome dude! Just bought my first e36 318is! Planning an engine swap eventually but i really need paint correction first and properly get the rust taken out, get all the trims sorted etc. Any tips? Prices wise?
Hey mate, thank you for tuning in! What engine you planning on swapping in? I'd get all the rust sorted then just have a good look at each panel to see if it's worth repainting any of them. I had my front and rear bumpers repainted as they were in pretty rough shape. Lucky I have a friend who is a professional painter and looked after me but I'd expect to pay about $500 per bumper depending on the shop. I've found that BMW paint is actually quite good to learn how to do paint corrections. It's very hard so you're unlikely to blow through the clear coat easily. Takes the stress out of it! Totally worth doing it, car looks amazing now.
I use 3000 - 5000 grit sand paper then Meguiars cutting. 5000 sand makes surface very perfect . So compound works its job easy. Well done.
👏🏻👏🏻🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Excellent video, enjoyed your journey on paint correction, have just subscribed 🏴
Thank you mate! Appreciate it!
That’s a lot of work. Why not use a sander to make the job go quicker? 🤷🏽♂️👍🏽
100% will be using a sander next time!
Any like at home option you could recommend instead of having to buy all those products ?
Hey mate, any all purpose cleaner will work instead of the Green Star. It's what I use as I have it in the garage for many other uses such as decon washes, engine bays and any other surface that needs a deep clean. For the trim itself, I can't recommend the GTechniq C4 high enough. As far as ceramic coatings go, it's not crazy expensive and in my opinion, it's the best product out there to bring back faded trim. You won't regret spending the $35ish dollars.
I’m looking forward to the next episode! 😊 new subscriber here 🫡
Thanks mate! Editing the next episode at the moment. Will have it up in a couple of days. Car looks soooooo good with the coating applied!
@@thedetailformula7046 amazing!! I can’t wait to see the outcome 🤩

awesome type 3's what are the specs? 17s?
Yeah man, I think they’re the best looking wheel on an e36! Unfortunately these ones are reps that came with the car when I brought it. They’re 17x8s. I look every week for real ones but haven’t come across any yet 😥
