The guys in this video speak quite colloquial Swedish, so that could be good listening practice - for example, at 0:35 the guy is saying "vi kör Asien också", where "vi kör (på)" is like saying "let's go for" (a phrase like "vi kör på det" could mean "let's decide on that", and so on), and the guy at 0:54 uses the casual word "bärs" for "beer" (the neutral word is "öl") and the English-like "softa" for "relax" (the neutral Swedish expression there would be for example "slappna av" which is more or less "loosen up", or "ta det lugnt", which is literally "take it easy").

Danes are obviously by far the most proficient in languages in Scandinavia. Danes understand Norwegian, Swedish, Scanian, Copenhagen, North and South Jutland, Low German and German and, of course, English. All the languages mentioned are taught in school. Of course, the Danes who sleep in class do not understand all these dialects, so they speak English when they meet their neighbors ha ha

As a swede I am a little shocked by how much americans and other europeajns in the comments are talking about how the girl who speaks spanish and finnish doesnt look swedish or isnt fully swedish. The swedish population is 30% second or third immigrants. Its not something we think about, looks does not tell us at all if someone is swedish or not. The only way to know if someone is from somewhere else or is a tourist is if they are acting out of norm, talking loud or interrupting or if they can't speak swedish ofc. It's quite a different culture I'm realising. This is very different from adults though, a lot of 40-50 year olds especially white men in sweden are not very accepting of immigrants regardless of ethnicity and it is sad. However if they went to schools in the cities in the 80-90s they will have been friends and know people of color etc. The younger people of sweden are so mixed in ethnicitiy especially in the big cities that we are slowly working our way out of the racism and xenophobia that exists today, especially against middle eastern people. (they get a bad rep because a lot of gangs and crime in cities are made by sertain groups of middle eastern people, but removing middle eastern immigrants from sweden is like removing all people named "Lucas". It doesnt change anyhting and it will only make the country emptier and less job friendly).

Such a sad lack of diversity, Almost everybody interviewed has a similar age, class and background and they all reply predictably the same. There are over 7000 languages in the world and this meagre selection is what's on the top of people's minds... Next time, go to a different bubble to interview and see what answers pop up.

It's common for Swedes to speak at least three langauges. We study two foreign languages or more at school and we understand Norwegian and Danish well (spoken Danish is tricky though, but written Danish is easy to comprehend). Swedes really love traveling and enjoy studying/working abroad. As we are highly aware of the advantages of being a respectful visitor to another country, we try and adopt by learning the language of the nation hosting us as their guests. Let's have a look at the langauge skills of a typical Swede like Zlatan Ibrahimovic 🙂. Zlatan speaks Swedish, Bosnian, Croatian, English, Dutch, Italian, (some) Spanish, (some) French and on top of that he understands the other Slavic languages spoken in former Yugoslavia, Norwegian and Danish. That's at least 10 languages! Not extreme for being a European. One of my former girlfriends was a native speaker of Swedish, Hungarian and Serbian, knew English and German really well, understood all of the Slavic languages in former Yugoslavia and also Norwegian and Danish. Another ex of mine was a native speaker of Italian and also knew English, German, Latin, Arabic, Greek and had studied several other languages at university level (I have forgotten which they were).

It's true that we study two foreign languages or more at school, and yes some Swedish people speak three languages or more fluently, but I don't think it is very common. Most people speak Swedish and English well and they have learned a third language at school so they might have a basic knowledge of that third language or possibly an intermediate level but they usually can't speak it fluently unless they have for example lived abroad. Most Swedish people don't speak languages like Bosnian, Croatian or Dutch. If they speak Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian it is usually because they or their parents originally came from former Yugoslavia or for example from Croatia.

For a second forget about the question itself, the last girl just gave off a much more welcoming, warm, and perceptive/emotionally intelligent vibe along with the ability to stick to her opinion over caving to social pressure. Honestly I think as a Swede the thing that makes me the saddest is the general vibe of Swedes, the biggest thing is conversational chemistry and body language/warmth and honestly most Swedes are entirely lacking in these departments compared to peoples of soooooo many other countries. Every international friend I have tells me I'm not Swedish whatsoever in my vibe and I did choose to attend and international school for a reason, I guess, it just never dawned on me just HOW BAD things are before looking into dating seriously for the first time. I guess on the plus side there are lots of international women who want a Swedish guy who doesn't have some of the downsides of most Swedish men, so I may find more luck dating in this pool, but yeah honestly I'm not proud of my people whatsoever...

I have read them partly in Swedish but also in English, German, Arabic, Tigrinya and maybe a few more language. The popular and classic Alfie Atkins-books have been translated into many different languages worldwide. There is another good Swedish book also called Farfars pojkar (in English translation: Grandfather's boys) by the Swedish authors called Susan Talanda, Berit Bergman and Cindy Wheeler. 🙂🙂
