Good videography ..... and lovely compositons and good contrast, etc. ... esp. conssidering no filtter ! In a couple of the shots with foreground, the depth of field could have been a tad better ... perhaps focusing at hyperfocal distance and stopping down to f22 would help
Beautiful stuff
how did you go about focusing? i have an RB67 and want to try some medium format IR, since there are no IR markings on any of the lenses or the bellows compensation chart I was a little hesitant so far
Some great photos here and also an excellent educational video for IR film usage, thank you.
Nice video and lovely photos. What cities in Asia do you appreciate the most with regard to street photography?
my right ear can’t hear you
wow your graveyard shot! stunning... thank you for sharing your work
I think you had a wonderful day. I enjoyed your video very much. I wish to thank you for sharing your lovely photos with us all too. Most of your photos ofter made me wish I would have tagged along with you on that particular day to be honest with you. Great Job!
Thank you very much 🙏
@@tomwhelan Sir, you are a gentlemen after my own heart. God Bless you. Roger
what viewfinder is that? does it let u get more precise focusing?
Loved the contrasty images, worked so well for your video. 👌🏻📷
There are far better ways to process B&W depending on how much you enjoy processing lol I know its all subjective, but the best method i have found is you want to create tonal separation, and those settings there are global which is too heavy handed. If you dont have PS but just LR, I would lift the shadows all the way and the hightlights down all the way, and use localised adjustments using the masks. Also white balance and colour have huge impact on B&W processing, so you want to make sure you have those set first.
good to see delta being used... i use it for my 5x4 work. have you done n-1 etc development on these, or brought up shadow detail post scanning? Delta doesnt have much latitude, and seeing you werent using graduated filters.. in my experience, you would of lost highlight detail shooting the way you did?
what developer did you use?
Rodinal 1:25 I believe
I like contrasty shots!! Ilford XP2 and pan f are my favorites. David@ Photo Manical
So happy I came across your channel, I really love your photography
Thank you 🙏
Now viewers know why the French word for "flair, style"- elan- can be found in Whelan. And no, I am not related to TW. These are photos from someone who clearly knows and loves the place intimately. They are similar to the Irish photographer Ivan McMahon- high praise indeed.
Thanks for your kind words, it’s really appreciated 🙏
Did you count for reciprocity failure? And hiw did you meter the scene?I really like it❤
Hi thanks for watching, if I remember correctly I approximately doubled the exposure time for reciprocity. Just did a basic meter for the scene with a light meter app. Its really harder than think to really overexpose at night, so if unsure just give it a little extra time.
Tom! Did you know Davy Crockett Used one of these Yashica cameras during the siege of the Alamo in 1836!? Using just one roll of Kodak Eastman 5222 black and white 35mm motion picture film he shot enough sprocket holes to stave off General Santa Anna and his army of 2000 men for THIRTEEN DAYS! Thank you so much for sharing! More people need to learn about the Yashica and its rich AMERICAN history of nearly 200 years. Learn more in my new youtube short "the untold history of the Yashica Mat 124G"
Love your shots! Especially the one with the wall, lighthouse and the parallel wire. I really like the contrast of delta 100. Have to try it myself!
Thanks very much, it’s a wonderful film Ilford Delta 100. Happy shooting
Some bangers in there! I thought some really nice shots. Just ordered my Yashica 124g can’t wait to get it and get some shots 😊
They’re great cameras, have fun 😊
Nice video
Thanks! Incredibly enjoyable to watch this film :) If you don't mind me asking, what 120 film did you use?
Thanks very much. I used Ilford delta 100 🙏
i love your videos Tom
Thanks very much 🙏
The trick with square format is to frame more of the foreground into your shots. Since the square format is so tall, in a sense it is like shooting portrait orientation 35mm. Otherwise if you have too much sky in the shot you are stuck having to crop the photo from 6x6 to 6x4.5... Also I personally find that the 80mm or so lens on most TLR cameras is perfect for portraitures but is just a bit too tight for landscape. You need more like a 65mm for landscapes.
An orange filter would make the sky darker and the clouds brighter.
Hi Tom, after 25 years of digital photography I'm enjoying analogue photography again. Spoilt by the EXIF data of digital photos, I wonder how you can remember the settings of 20 photos. Do you keep a log during the photo session? Thank you for your unaffected and authentic videos! Best regards, Lutz
Thanks very much, I’m glad your enjoying shooting film again. I do regularly have a pen and pad with me to right down the camera settings. Thanks for finding the time to watch the videos. All the best Tom 🙏
Hi Tom, a very interesting building with curves and corners - a magnificent black and white object. And all without ugly smearings - very rare and all the more pleasing! I should come to Cornwall sometime....
I love black and white photographs. Really enjoy your videos.
Thanks very much 🙏
I really love film photography 👌👌
I am rewatching some of your videos. Looking forward to seeing some new film photography videos. Hope you are well.
Thank you 🙏
I thought the shots were excellent myself. Very nice to my way of thinking ! Thanks for the awesome video in such a lovely place.

Great photographs kind sir !
Thanks very much 🙏
Very enjoyable simple , clean just what I desire a walk with a photographer through his day. The photo's were very nice in square format.
Thanks very much, it’s really appreciated 🙏
Awesome work Tom I’m just in the process of trying my old Airesflex TLR like you I’m needing to give the focus screen a good clean I just watched a video on doing this with TLRs it looks pretty easy. Nice shots through your day mate cheers
Thanks very much Paul, good luck with the focus screen. I hope you get it nice and clean. Many thanks Tom 🙏
@@tomwhelanI just deved the film now drying the negs look pretty sharp, soon see how sharp haha cheers
Hi Tom I’m new to your channel. I enjoyed this thank you. My experience trying to make digital (B&W) photos look like film in LR has been hit and miss until lately when I discovered the huge (to me) benefits of judicious use of the texture slider (an increase of c15) in conjunction with a reduction in clarity. I find like you that more grain than one might think of using is key but LR just applies it as a ‘blanket’ over the top and you lose the lovely effect with film where the grain is less apparent on sharper edges and they ‘pop’ out of the rest of the grain so nicely. I’ve found that adding some texture sorts it out, giving sharper edges without the slightly sledgehammer effect of clarity. I also use dehaze on linear gradients on flat skies; this brings out tones I often didn’t realise were there. Like the intersecting linear grad - thanks - haven’t tried that before.
Hi Ben, thanks very much. I’m definitely going to try out your suggestions next time I’m in Lightroom. I really appreciate your feedback and ideas. Many thanks Tom 🙏
could have done with a red filter great pics cheers
Thank you, I do love a red filter 🙏
yer i use mine all the timei try to do as much in camera cheers@@tomwhelan
Great video Tom, interesting and informative - thank you for uploading. Btw, you're looking particularly fit and healthy since your big move. Atb.
Thanks very much its really appreciated 🙏
Lovely job Tom. Learned a few techniques here as I too relish my Nikon FE2 shooting experience over digital. I’ve just recently bought the Nikon ZF and am loving the digital experience with adapted old Nikon glass. Your brief tutorial is the icing on the cake for me, touching up the digital shots for film output is all I was missing. Thanks for your insights✌️👍
Thanks very much, I love the look of the new Nikon it’s a beautiful camera. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and it was helpful. Happy shooting. All the best Tom 🙂
Thank you, very informative loved the shots and the way you showed how to do the lightroom adjustments. ❤
Thank you, I’m really happy you found it helpful 👍
Nice editing but remember it's still a digital image! Of course a scanned film image edited becomes a digital image also!
Thank you, I miss printing in the darkroom. It looks like digital for a while 🙏
Should have done a sudden hair cut switcheroo on us! All the best in Cambodia.
Haha that’s where I cooled down with the air con. I found a nice hairdresser 🤣
Thanks Tom some lovely images there.
Thank you 🙏
