Erato Ensemble - The Transformation of Miss Emily Evans (Katerina Gimon / Barbara Black)
The Transformation of Miss Emily Evan (2022)
Music by Katerina Gimon (Commissioned by Erato)
Libretto by Barbara Black
Dorothea Hayley, soprano
Melanie Adams, mezzo-soprano
William George, tenor
Steve Maddock, baritone
Jeff Pelletier, flute
Julie Begg, clarinet
Sarah Kwok, violin
Alexandra Sia, cello
Michael Park, piano
Chad Emry Heltzel, conductor
The Transformation of Miss Emily Evans is a comic chamber opera based on a microfiction of the same name from Barbara Black’s “Little Fortified Stories”, which was in turn loosely inspired by Vancouver Suffragette Helena Gutteridge and other early B.C. suffragettes. The creation of Miss Evans was made possible by a grant from the Canada Council of the Arts, and we hope this work will eventually become the first in a trilogy of short, twisted, fairytale-esque operas called “The Twisted Tales” - stay tuned!
In my musical setting of Barbara’s text, you’ll hear several motifs representing key characters and themes recur and transform throughout the opera. The first motif, that of the “prim and proper” court of the ethics counsel, can be heard in the instrumental introduction to the opera. You’ll also hear themes introduced for the Ethics Counsel and Miss Evans later in the 1st scene. In scene 3, there’s
also a chance to join in the fun! We invite you to join in chanting with the Ethics Counsel as part of the Mesmerist’s incantation to help ‘transform’ Miss Evans.
Vótus-pólus, vótus-fócus. [repeat until cue]
Blast her to eternity!
Blast her! x 4
We hope you enjoy The Transformation of Miss Emily Evans!

Synopsis:
In the opening scene, a smart, well-read woman, Miss Evans, of the Victorian era, is deemed too intelligent for polite society. She appears before the Ethics Counsel, professing in song her love of knowledge and women’s rights to education. However, her behaviour is judged as inexcusable and she is referred to Doctor Corrigan for a cure.
In Scene 2, the pompous doctor prescribes dubious treatments which only have the effect of making him unhinged. Miss Evans upholds her beliefs. The Doctor fails, and summons the Mesmerist to eradicate Miss Evans’ unorthodox views.
In Scene 3, the Mesmerist-actually a fellow suffragette in disguise and sympathetic to Miss Evans’ plight-does a fake incantation and spell to allow Miss Evans to “disappear” and ultimately escape.
In the final scene, some 20 years later, Miss Evans, now doctor and leader of the Women’s Suffrage League, announces their victory in the referendum for women to gain the right to vote.
The story is loosely based on the Women’s Suffrage movement in Vancouver, BC, circa late 1800’s to mid 1900’s.

Beautiful tribute to your Dad, Will <3 <3
" Raremusicm". ‐ thanx but what is your source about Page asking to use one of Jackies' song? Also about H Young? It's common knowledge about Page playing on her session( 4 songs: Don't Turn Your Back On Me", I Remember the Boy" etc. Page talked about her in Trouser Press, Guitar Greats book 1983, website. Are there any good books on DeShannon? I am aware of the songs the 2 of them cowrote for others: Faithfull, Dave Berry, Barbara Lewis ( Page thought they wrote for Ester Phillips " or one of those colored artists"( his quote Trouser Press also DeShannons The Liberty Years CD liner notes and quote from Faithfulls book) and a few others Judi Smith. DeShannons " Thats Another Side of You"( now available on YT!) The source fir the last one is Greg Russo who did the liner notes for"What the World Needs Now. " Also PHILLIPA LEWIS,...Some songs were recorded by 2 artists ( I've Got Tears to Remind Me"). I guess Page wrote or cowr the music and DeShannon wrote lyrics?. They both visited the US but Page would return alone. There is a bad rumor that ZEPS Tangerine was written about DeShannon. Wrong!!!! The lyrics were written in 68 by Keith Relf. Zep redid the song and Relf wasn't credited. I commented on this on YT and haven't heard a response. I own most of the songs and have interviews as my source.Ive had the YBs Shape of Things 7LP box set since March 1985. Then it was withdrawn. The Authentics have been reissued a few times. I met someone who owned the single- must be Rare! Thanks!!!!
Πολλά όμορφο!
Trash of the first order!
This melody resonates deeply within me, echoing the profound tales of life, love, heartache, and renewal. It's the symphony of my very soul, speaking in harmonious whispers that touch the core of my being.
i spend 1 hour looking for this. strangely i couldnt findt it on the youtube app on my phone. i had to use the computer: i thought u guys deleted it :(
Glad you found it! We actually have another version up now as well, from a more recent concert with different musicians.
Modest....refined....impressive ... a valuable musical document for counter Mark Donnelly. - Thank you for sharing . Best regards from a Dutchman.
9 years later (better laten than never!) applause from the Netherlands. For Mark, the splendid counter and Rita, Yun & Stefan.
counter-tenor Mark Donnelly is excellent. Fine breathcontrol and no disturbing vibrato - I prefer this version far above the English text (which is also to be seen and heard on youtube, also with Mark and soprano Catherine Laub). Compliments from the Netherlands.
Where is Mark nowadays? cannot trace him further (apart from another singer with the same name)
❤
Exquisite. Thank you
so much emotional
Memory is a strange thing. It doesn't work the way I thought it did. We are so bound by time; by its order.
I love this video! 🎶❤🎶
Truly awesome. Very tight band. Will, your voice reaches in and gives it squeeze. Production? Could use use a lift, really not bad but not quite at the calibre of the band. I definitely will be coming to see one of you guys.
...>one of your gigs.
Thanks Geoff! That was just a rehearsal video. Our studio version is much better quality. We haven’t played this live for a while but are putting it in our setlist for our show this Saturday!
Nicely played, shame you played it so fast.

Thank you too Will for your lovely reply....yes the music of this calibre is absolutely wonderful.
I heard this piece of music on Classic FM and it is absolutely beautiful, It brought emotions that I had buried out and although I sat sobbing it was so cleansing and made me appreciate the gift of being able to hear and how precious this gift is. Thank you for your talent it really is a masterpiece.😇
Thank you so much for your kind comments Heather! Music is a wonderful gift!
This song got popular now due to the HBO LoU series, however I have heard it previously from other movies. This is one piece when you check the sheet it is so simple and even primitive, but with violin it is a miracle , the only thing I felt in this song, as it written like a Canon full of secuences , conciertoes my ear still used to it is the ramp up, and something monumental heroic will come, but no. If I would Max I would do another movement, generally until the last measures I keep feeling this music still in opening, and the whole piece just the first movement before something monumental, for me this music is "unfinished" :(, but the interpretation and you play is 5/5 nice intonation , emotional, if I would have tears I would give you :D
I know this song from THE AUTHENTICS FEATURING JIMMY PAGE on a 1984 Yardbirds 7LP box set quickly withdrawn. Then released in 1992 - but the author is Helda Young. Later, it was learned it was DeShannon..... What is the origin of this song please??? Thanx PS I saw on DeShannons website that Page cowr FAITHFULLS" Come and Stay With Me"- this is incorrect . No Page credit just played on.
This is from a 1965 album of demos that Liberty’s publishing arm published to promote Jackie’s songs to other artists. They published 4 albums of fully produced songs from 1962-64, and then this one of acoustic songs in a more folk rock style.
@@willgeorge7203 Thanx- is this available on CD and which album is' I Don't Wanna Be Without You ' on? The song is credited Hilda Young then H. Young.
@@familydogg1234 It was never released on an official CD. Just a promotional LP that was sent to record labels, artists etc. I got it from a bootleg CD put out by the Jackie DeShannon Appreciation Society years ago. They are no longer active.
Thanx
What's the title of the bootleg please??? Thanx
This inspirational performance Ìs off the charts
Thank you so much!
My husband, Phil Byrd, was producer-director of this program and I was Music Associate. Part of the On Stage at Wolf Trap series for PBS, shot in 1987 or 1988 - our records don't go back that far. Maureen was a dream to work with, and we kept a little bit in touch with her over the years - she is a lovely lady. She's in the early stages of Alzheimers now at age 73. Tragic.
So sad. She gave so much joy!
THE BEST VERSION
Ahhhh I just keep coming back! Love this performance!
Glad you're still enjoying it!! :)
Music that reaches in and touches a part of me (us). Many tears.
Thank you! We just performed it again last week. It's such a beautiful and moving piece of music.
So Raw and Beautiful, this is amazing!
Thank you so much Debbie ❤️
Wonderful song and Marvelous orchestra
Lovely!
Interesting composition !
Great job Will; your voice is so unique. I am a history buff of Johnny Cash and I do believe he would have enjoyed your version.
Thank you so much Tammey!
Wow!!! Will’s voice is unique and wonderful!!! Great rendition!!!!

If at the sound of wish The summer sun would shine And if just a smile would do To brush all the clouds from the sky If at the blink of an eye The autumn leaves would whirl And if you could sigh a deep sigh To scatter them over the earth I'd blink my eyes And wave my arms I'd wish a wish To stop all harm If at the wave of a hand The winter snows would start And if you could just light a candle To change people's feelings and hearts I'd whisper love In every land To every child Woman and man That's what I'd do If my wishes would come true That's what I'd do If my wishes could come true.
fantastiiish!
❤️ merci
I can't stop listening to this music. It is so heart wrenchingly sad but at the same time, hopeful. I imagine a movie where at the end the main characters - the tragic lovers, a mother who lost a child to a tragedy or long illness, a hero sacrificing him/her self for the greater good as the rest watched, heart broken, devastated but understood the great sacrifice made. . . . .
Frank & bill scene from the last of us. Not exactly as you put it but not far off.
@@kinger5542 Yes! that is true! Spot on. Also, I first heard this brilliant music in the movie 'Arrival'.
Here we go again ❤️
Well done for performing this. Rainier unashamedly followed Britten with so much written on the E in the break, a Pears trademark. 😉 She is sadly now relegated to nowhere in particular. I was a bit of a fan in my younger days, centuries ago. I hope you can upload a newer version with less obtrusive noise.
Fascinating.
I love Hovhaness, but this type of singing has got to go. Before microphones and speakers (electric amplification) singers had to belt it out loudly like this in order for the large audience to hear them. But then came microphones and Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, and singing gained much nuance and lost the goofiness.
Yes, and Mozart and Bach should always be played on synthesizers now, and lute music should be played on electric guitar.
@@SingDude What IS this type of singing called? I feel an urge to call it opera singing or operatic singing, but it often isn't used in operas. So that probably isn't the right name for it. Is it called classical singing?
@@yowzephyr Yes, that would be an appropriate name for it. This is an art-song, as opposed to opera. Same technique but more intimate. She's not belting loudly, she's actually singing quite softly most of the time. Microphone singing is a completely different technique, and not appropriate in this style of music. Plus, if just the voice was amplified it would throw off the balance between voice and violin, so the violin would have to be amplified as well. And that would change the acoustic quality of the music, which is not as the composer intended.
@@SingDude I have never really liked classical singing. It would be interesting to see a poll that shows us what percentage of people do and do not like it.
@@yowzephyr I know I am late to the party, but I have found classical singing has grown on me over time: this song in particular. For me, it was getting more familiar with the landscape and coming to understand its more subtle components. Just as much of death metal can be dismissed as being a wall of sound, I think so too can operatic styles. (Edit: Thanks for sharing this piece btw SingDude)
1. (2) Las Seis Cuerdas 0:00 2. (6) Malagueña 4:10 3. (7) Memento 7:00
It's a good song but.... It's kind of dramatic😅
I'm glad you feel that way. It means you've not lost someone you love to depression, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.
GREAT my CHOIR has sung this
