It’s terrible that it took a white guy to bring black music to everyone in America, but that wasn’t Elvis’ fault. He didn’t like being called the “king.” He was deeply religious having grown up in black and integrated churches and he saw God as the only king. You can’t fake having the music in your blood. Many white rappers fit that description. That’s cultural appropriation. But if it’s Elvis or Canadian reggae singer Snow, who was raised poor in a Jamaican-majority community in Toronto, Canada, it wasn’t appropriation. They lived a similar life and had similar life experiences that led them to express their talents the way they did. Yes, Elvis became a star that Chuck Berry and others didn’t largely because of racism. That’s undeniable. But you can’t blame Elvis for that. As long as he gave credit to the original artist, paid royalties, and was authentic about who he was as a singer and performer, I don’t have a problem with it. The guy hung out in black churches and night clubs. What other music was he supposed to sing? I’m a white guy from Vancouver, Canada, but my Welsh mother loved Motown and gospel music, so growing up, I sang along to Andre Crouch, the Supremes, Aretha, and others. I knew the history, so I appreciated that Elvis took black music on his back and brought it to everyone to enjoy. Public Enemy owes a lot of their success to Elvis because he made black music cool for white kids to listen to, whether their racist parents liked it or not. My father was racist, and he hated that my mom exposed me to the music she did. But it didn’t stop me. Music is music and soul is soul and as long as you’re giving credit and appreciating where the music comes from and the people who put their blood, sweat and tears into it, we can all get along.
