I've had mine for 15 years and it still works fine. The door did start to rust a little in spots after around 10 years, so I sanded the rust spots, put 2 coats of Rustoleum primer on it and then 2 coats of Rustoleum paint. It still looks like new 5 years after that. That said, the surface rust I sanded didn't affect its operation, so it still worked fine - just didn't look as nice. I'm not sure if fixing the rust would have been covered by a warranty, but for a couple cans of spray paint, I wasn't going worry about it. With occasional maintenance, it should last longer than me.

Why do you say that? All of the folks who died were in a subdivision where the houses didn't have basements. This guy has an underground shelter. Underground shelters with concrete or steel roofs do provide a lot of protection.

Actually, some people did. And there was a family who hand dug a shelter underneath their home. The father was away at work, but his family was home and they went into the shelter and survived.

that tornado that he survived was one of the strongest tornadoes to strike the state of Alabama it had winds estimated at 210 mph even though Jarrell had winds at 260 mph The reason why almost no one survived it was because it was so slow moving and it was over a certain spot for most three minutes just grounding things into pieces But the tornado that hit his home in 2011 was traveling close to 55 mph still violent and also the same rank Ef-5

Assuming you are not living in a pre-fab home ( No offense If you do ) there are many options, both above and below ground. Above ground tend to be the size of a closet while below ground range from the shelter in this video to something that resembles a one of those backyard prepper bunkers ( the septic tank or bus sized ones).

@@bhoff82 huh. So basicly my area has to be hit by tornados/hurricanes before one can get a grant. And it only works in the state of emergency time line following a disaster. That's messed up, like 2 scoops into digging a bomb shelter in Hiroshima 3 seconds before it got nuked. And dose my house need to be damaged/obliterated before I can get one. If so it's like " our condolences on losing your family and pets, but congratulations you can now get a shelter".

@@toryknotts8026 Your home doesn’t need to be hit, but there’s a lot of red tape that must be dealt with before a grant is issued. For example, the members of your local hazard mitigation group must fill out a petition to receive the grant first. Then if the president has declared your state a “state of emergency” funds can be given out. Just Google your state and see if any shelter grants are available. Unfortunately for Alabama, there are none. So I’m left with shelling out the $5500 for a safe room that will fit my family.
