Listen to 'Heavy Metal Never Dies' by Iron Savior. Just after the pause after the first chorus, only the drums and guitar are playing for the first section of the riff. It feels empty without the bass, but then when the bass comes back for the 2nd round of the riff, it's whole again.

As a bassist venturing into metal, I personally prefer having a more punchy and distorted sound. it's what I hear in modern metal and I think that's the real role of bass in metal. Sure, filling the low end is part of it, but its mainly to add that punch. That low end distorted punch. Without it metal would sound weak.

I started playing 30 years ago...When I started back in the day, playing with pedalboards was shameful, but it was the only way to get some proper distortion and some effects through your bedroom amp (which was usually most of it bypassed-like playing through the clean channel neutral or effects return). Amps where for the pros, and us mere mortals could only dream. Fast forward, I have now all the gear I ever wanted, full tube rack setup and it sounds amazing. And people now tell me, the 5£ IR and 50£ plug in can do the same. I have some good quality plugins and Its which sound pretty good on bedroom volumes. BUT...The effect you get from playing in front of a cranked amp and a cab blowing air to your face can NEVER be replicated. Will you tell in a mix? Will you tell which is which in a "blind" test? The answer is: WHO CARES? You can tell for sure, if you are PLAYING in front of the cab or in front of some desktop speakers.

So I wanted to play rythm guitar because I love how heavy these songs sound. I realized it's actualy bass that makes these actually sound heavy.

Best analogy I've heard is that bass is like the foundations in a house. No one walks in to a house and says the foundations are amazing. They notice the chandelier on the ceiling, the furniture, the quality of the paintwork and flooring etc. But none of that can exist without the foundations. OR: Bass is the cake, the guitar is the icing. Cake on it's own is great. Cake with icing is amazing. But you can't just have a bowl of icing.

I would like to see this done with bass amps and solid state guitar amps used with modeling preamplifiers, as it is my understanding that loudness and wattage are different for tube amps than solid state designs (tube amps are louder at lower wattage than solid state amps, generally, is my understanding). When I was coming up in the 90s, the standard was a 100 watt tube head and a 4x12 cab. You could use this with a full stack if you really wanted to show off. Occasionally people would use higher wattage, like 150 watts. My solid state Randall Cyclone circa 2000 is 300 watts. Much of this was marketing of the time that more watts = better, I think. We have now gone the other direction with the emphasis on more portable rigs at lower wattage. "Lunchbox" amps became popular around 2010 with Mesa's Trans-Atlantic and others. Some constructive criticism: 1) If you are playing with two guitars and a bass, the volume of the summed guitars will probably be greater, so each guitar will need to turn itself down vs. one guitar. 2) Having a bass would be helpful here as low end frequencies would add more complexity to the mix and make the guitar harder to hear. That said, I can see how having one might make the sound blurry and boomy in the room for demonstration purposes. 3) I would go with 50 watts and the amp turned down to an appropriate level for live playing. The reason is you should have more clean headroom at higher wattage and playing at 10 can damage speakers. I had this happen to me once on my Marshall JCM800/900 style Carvin MTS3200 100 watt head and cab. One of the speakers blew when the volume and gain were cranked. There was no boost. Carvin told me not to 10 everything to protect the speakers. The head was 4, 8, and 16 ohms and the cabinet wattage was quite high at 300 watts per cab connected in parallel I believe. A speaker was still blown by a fully cranked head using 1/3rd the rated wattage. Amps with switchable wattage are mainly there so you can get more signal breakup at practice volume and to make heads easier to transport by having fewer power tubes. My Carvin MTS3200 even had switchable wattage with 50 and 100 watt settings as early as the year 2000, but it is a full sized head. 4) I'm concerned about a grounding issue in the signal chain or guitar. The hum is very loud without the noise gate engaged. I would expect hiss and feedback, but not that much hum. The boost, noise gate, and compressor really help. It's interesting that you have them in the loop after the preamp instead of in front of the amp like many people do. Positioning these in the signal chain would largely be a matter of taste I think. I tend to put boosts up front and effects in the fx loop. 5) *It is my understanding that with tube amps for every 100 watts loudness is increased by 3 db. If you want a lot more volume, you need a full stack and thus more speakers pushing more air.* In such a situation, you may need a higher wattage amp to push the speakers hard enough. I am not an expert on calculating Ohms to obtain the optimal wattage and all the various ways speakers can be wired in a cabinet or to a head, but there are many things to consider when matching an amplifier/power amplifier to a given number and type of speakers. The reverse of this logic is if you need less volume use a 2x12 cab. Great riffs and drumming. The video was very helpful. Thanks.

Reasons for bass in metal IMO: 1) Glues together the mix. 2) Melodic counterpoint. As a guitar player, I play bass much like I would lead guitar--as a melodic instrument an octave below. 3) Determining chord identities and key by determining the root note in chords like dim7 where any note can be the root (more of a thing in jazz influenced metal). The problem is thrash metal in the 80s often scooped the bass and pushed the guitar upper mids in the mix. Since the bass usually just doubled everything, it wasn't important that the bass be loud in the mix. In the 90s and 00s and drumming became more complicated and the guitar tones became thicker and more scooped, often the kick would come down on *every single guitar pick attack*, making the bass even harder to hear because it was being covered by guitars with increased low end and sampled bass drums with a click in the high end. There was nowhere for the bass to live in the mix. The recent popularity of djent and 8 string guitars only makes this worse. Also, most guitarists playing picked or fingerstyle bass at fast tempos can be sloppy, considering bass is not their primary instrument and bass takes even more right hand strength and precision than guitar does. I believe the bass is often buried to cover sloppy playing. The lows are boosted on quad or even 6 tracked rhythm guitars to make it sound like the bass and guitars are locked in when it is really just the guitar.

i want one with a hardtail too. the floyds are cool and all but its just one more guitar with parts you have to maintain. the hardtail is just more reliable in the long run when you start getting more and more guitars lol. great job man. edit.. also, i never thought to sand the headstock for stain when refinishing. thanks for that lol.

It's been about a year. Do you still recommend this for the Quad Cortex? I just got my Quad Cortex and looking at the Neural DSP forum, users recommend the Morningstar MC8. I'm wondering if it's worth dropping the $300 on that or $170 on the Blackstar Live Logic 6

People (musicians) forget in a live show what that people feel is a deep wave of frequeicies .. studio sound is one thing .. when people feel it in the crowd is a whole different experience

I don't understand how the head wattage matters. Is it what drives the power to the cab? So even though the cab is 300 watts, if you have a small head, the cab can't go that loud? What if you had like a 20w head, but a 2 - 300w cabs? Would 20w be loud enough because now you have more speakers, or would 20w not be able to drive a full stack?

For most situations, excluding live, BIAS would be totally fine I think. If you're a gigging guitarist having self-reliant hardware is the way to go however. That said I have BIAS and have no need of an expensive hardware modeller. Works fine for me.

Metallica learned that the hard way on the ...And Justice For All. Despite the actual songwriting being good the albums sounds thin and weak due to inaudible bass.

Using the MIDI footswitch, you can't see what you are controlling. If you are using different scenes for each song, the MIDI footswitch would not be an option, you need to see the screen.

Giaggin' with the Orange OR 15 (15watts) we usually are on 3 to 5/10 on the volume. Same goes with the Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 50 (50watts) 3 to 4/10 is usually there. We play melodic punk rock and these settings apply on super small to big stages.
