Claire’s Cottage Aspirations
Приєднався 8 сер 2023
I am a rebel garden novice, a southern girl transplanted into the Pacific North West, trying to learn to grow things in Hardiness Zone 8b. I like to experiment with things and find out what works and doesn't. I don't like to take anything to seriously and I feel like rules are made to broken! Follow me as I embark on my ultra hippy fantasy of harvesting my own food, raising chickens and children, attempting to preserve things, and foraging for treats in my urban surroundings!
Success or Failure? Four Garden experiments from the year!
Join me as I walk through four garden experiments from this year! From the companion planting magic of a Three Sisters Garden, to building up rich soil in a Lasagna Garden, creating a natural weed barrier with wood chips, and growing peas on a whimsical teepee structure, each experiment brought new insights. Let’s dig into the successes and surprises of each one and share what worked (and what didn’t!). Perfect for urban homesteaders, small space gardeners, and anyone curious about hands-on growing techniques. ❤️

Are you going to to try and grow a bigger one
Clearly a very brilliant idea 💡
I feel you'll always have failures but they make the successes even better
I have to agree with you! Great perspective!
Hello Claire, I am in the deep Atlantic SE (Miami), I do love mayo so is time I learned to make it, ty Mom
You will be shocked with how easy it is, you definitely should! You can always tweak it and add different flavors too, it’s so versatile!
You might be better off innoculating those peas and letting the bacteria make their nitrogen
Interesting! I’ve never heard of that but I will look into it!
Absolutely beautiful garden Claire😊😊😊
Well thank you! It has been such a blessing this year!!
I started layering it into my compost pile which is mostly leaves and yard waste. Collect it, and pour into the middle of the chicken wire fenced in pile, and then water in heavily. We'll see how it works.
That sounds like a wonderful idea!! Lord knows I have tons of leaves in my yard right now, I might give this a shot!

You are lucky to have bananas growing there! That’s must be fun! It’s so cold where I am :(

Thank you!
Great job. Back yard gardening is a great idea. Most neighborhoods are set up perfectly for it. I'm growing a garden in my back yard too. I'm just planting right in the ground. I dig out little holes in the lawn for the plants and plant strait in the lawn. There is weeding to do, but no more than there would be by covering up the lawn for a garden area. I tried a covered area with compost on top last year and the grass just came right back up. The type of grass growing probably affects if it pushes through the cover or not. I'm happy to see you, people, producing your/their own food.
That is awesome that you also have a good backyard for growing food!! I like your approach of just keeping it simple! I think sometimes gardening gets over complicated for sure!
@@Clairescottageaspirations Thanks! It's definitely a learning process. I'm just getting started. I'm on my second season here of gardening seriously, first season very seriously. We reap what we sow, as they say! I enjoy making videos documenting my gardening process too. Sometimes it helps me keep going and get the work done. I don't know how people do it, but some of these gardening youtube videos get like thousands of views and hundreds of comments. I appreciate the more ground level videos. I plan to look through your channel and watch some more videos. Keep up the good work!
I throw all of the ingredients for the mayo together at once and then blitz. I’m impatient.
That’s awesome! I used to be too 😂 but I created to many “broken” mayonnaise batches that I got more strict on my process lol!
First of all, I love your dress!!! It’s so unique and so fall! That was a great idea to show four awesome gardening experiments and get us excited for next year!!! I also love seeing how far you came all in one video! You accomplished SO MUCH out there!!!!! It really is amazing how the plants produced so abundantly in those spaces that you carved out! God blessed you so richly!!!!!! I am super inspired!!! In fact, I’m going to go order some sugar snap peas RIGHT NOW! Those are some of my favoritest snacks to grow!!! - Thank you for sharing your wisdom AND your failures and for keeping it real!!!!!!! We need to see more real people doing real things! That inspires me more than anything else!!! And I’m so thankful that Citrus lived through her twine eating adventure!!!!!
Thank you!! It was definitely a busy year, I’m happy I dug through all my footage because even I forgot how far my yard came! God really did come through with allowing all those seeds to thrive!! I appreciate it and that you always have such an uplifting word to give! I definitely like to keep it real because I don’t want anybody to think they don’t have the capability to create something magical from scratch! And lol I’m thankful citrus didn’t perish to the string either 😂
It’s all looking fantastic. 😊😊😊
Thank you! It was definitely a wonderful season!
You really had such a busy year in your garden! It’s fun to look back and see what you accomplished and how everything took off. It makes me happy to see you so happy in your beautiful life. I look forward to your baking videos in the cozy months ahead and look forward to see what you do next spring.
Thank you sweet friend!! I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to share my gardens journey and all the joy it’s brought! I’m so ready for the cozy cooking show days though ❤️time for tasty treats!
Thank you for watching! The soil was definitely healthy and I am so thankful for that, it definitely made the season so successful!
Looks good!! Thank you for sharing? Do you have a large bowl or container that is not plastic? I am worried about the hot broth in the plastic. I am a new subscriber!
Hi! Thanks for subscribing, glad to have you here! Good point about the plastic, unfortunately I didn’t have a large enough glass container, I’m gradually trying to phase out plastics as I can afford. But you are so correct plastic leaching is definitely a concern especially with hot liquids and other foods. 🥰
Just a suggestion: water glass or dehydrate those eggs for a time when you don't get many eggs. Garden is looking good! Blessings
Great suggestion! I wish I had’ve been more on top of preserving them, these were too old to go that route but I’m definitely putting by some now :) on the bright side, I truly believe these eggs added some amazing nutrients to my tomatoes this year, they performed so well!
Oohhhh you’re going to have to pass on the recipe for those pumpkin pie tarts please!!! Who knew creamer was so easy to make! What a delicious pairing
Oh for sure, you have to make them! I could see this being a new favorite in your house! The creamer was way easier than I thought it would be, it felt pretty great that I could pronounce all the ingredients 😂 I feel a little healthier and fancier when I drink my coffee now lol!
👌❤👌
👌👌 beautiful
Well done you. That pastry looked delicious. I made some recently with a recipe from Nancy Birtwhistle, she's on UA-cam and has great ideas for green living. She uses frozen butter. I did all of the pastey in my blender, so hands off 😅. You can use parchment on top of your pastry to roll it out. You are an inspiration, Claire. Have a great week
Oh I love Nancy birtwhistle, I follow her on instagram and have read some of her books! I didn’t know she had a UA-cam, I will go check it out! Thanks for the tip about the parchment paper, I bet that will really help 🥰 I hope you also have a wonderful week Kim!
Thank you for taking the scary out of cooking!!! These look so very yummy!!! My mouth is watering! - All of your fall decorations look so good! You even have pumpkins on a stick?!?! - I made applesauce last night, and it was so satisfying and extra tasty since it was homemade. You showed me how not scary it could be! Thank you for being such an inspiration and sharing your joy of what you do with us! You are such a blessing!!!
I love those pumpkin on a stick plants (I don’t know the name 😂) I plan on growing some next year hopefully 🤞 but I buy some from Trader Joe’s every fall! Thank you for your encouraging words and I’m glad I can help take the scary out of cooking! ❤️
Hello bạn rất giỏi nấu ăn và chế biến các món bánh , biết ơn bạn đã chia sẻ cách làm tới bạn bè .
Thank you! I love to bake and cook, sharing recipes is the closest I can get to sharing with my friends around the world! Thank you for the compliment!
Your apple peeler, corer has a suction cup on the bottom (that silver lever that gets switched to the other side) that you need to faster to a flat surface in order for it to stay in place. You should yt need to hold the machine while you’re using it.
Hi there! Great observation, You are correct it does have a suction on the bottom, which is awesome! I’m not a great technical explainer so bear with me 😂 I have used the contraption ALOT bless its heart, and literally the day I made this video, the spring that holds the “arm” that goes around the spiral rod slipped, so it’s connection wasn’t staying in the spiral groove unless I held the lever a certain way. Otherwise is would just get stuck and peel the same section of apple and not allow it to pass through the peeling-coring, section! Even with that quirk it’s still a time saving tool for sure 🥰
@@Clairescottageaspirations ahhh that explains it! I’d hate to see someone struggling, when they don’t need to…. But I hadn’t thought of technical difficulties.. thanks for your reply!
Thanks for looking out for me! That’s what I love about the UA-cam community, everyone is so kind to share their knowledge or trouble shoot with one another 🥰
Oh, what a perfect use for that!!! And it looks lovely!!!!!!
It turned out so cute!!! I’ve been dying for a place to hang pretty herbs and flowers, this worked out great for my small space
Wow!!! Another beautiful and inspiring video, Claire!!! That all looks so yummy and I know it smells so good, too! I love how encouraging you are! I’m about to make applesauce because of your example and encouragement! Katana’s voice is so precious in the background! You’ve got such a cozy home and cozy vibe! Yes! Your mantra should be “Get cozy!” Thank you so much for all the lovely, wholesomeness!!!
I’m so happy you made some applesauce, I bet it turned out amazing! Yall got a bunch of yummy apples on your adventures! Lol katana is def cute and she certainly had a lot to say while I was working lol 😂
Bạn rất khéo nấu ăn và chăm sóc cuộc sống cho gia đình 👍.
Thank you friend! That is a sweet compliment!
What a wonderful mum. Good on ya. 😊
Thanks for the kind words! 😊
I just love watching what you’re up to! Love seeing you busy in the kitchen just enjoying making homemade meals for your family. You’re such an amazing mom and wife! Very talented my sweet friend!
Awww thanks for the kind words! It’s so much fun to get in the kitchen and make these things, I’m glad that my family gets the benefit of it and I enjoy sharing it with others! 🥰
My grandmother had absolutely no problem stopping at a farm that had apples on the ground and asking if they were going to use them. If not she asked if she could pick them up. Often they would give them to her for free but some folks would say “no” or ask a ridiculous price. Nothing is more frustrating then to be refused drop apples only to see them left rotting on the ground.
I love that she did that!! I bet she turned it into a lot of amazing things! What was your favorite Apple treat that she used to make you? That’s a shame that some people turned her down, it’s so sad they were greedy with something that could be useful, especially if they weren’t going to use it!
Good stuff. Can’t wait for my fruit trees to fruit.
That will be an exciting time for you! You have a lot of cool fruit trees!
Looks exactly like my plan for the next two weeks :) I picked up three bushels of apples at the local orchard. I make a ton of heavily spice apple butter to make baked oatmeal for my husband throughout the year. I also make the ACV and apple sauce. Likely I'll be making apple chips this year as well. 'Tis the season!
That baked oatmeal sounds delicious! I love a good apple butter, it’s sounds like you will be stocked up for awhile! I’ve never made apple chips but I bet they are yummy 😋 I hope you enjoy all your hard work and tasty food!
Okay, that was a beautiful video!!! Loved it all!! From Apple picking, to seeing that beautiful book, and you all creating your own family time inspired by it.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! We definitely enjoyed alllll of the adventures, and the kids enjoyed the applesauce afterward!
Somehow I missed this! I love how you used the word glimmers! Yes! Look for the glimmers of beauty and joy! Let’s offset our triggers with glimmers!
Yessss! One magical glimmer hopefully cancels out a few triggers!
Oh, Claire! You DID get to live out your Tasha Tudor dreams!!! That was so precious of Mr. Berry to let y’all pick apples! Y’all look like Ma and Laura Ingalls! Conner sharing with Kanata, and her saying thank you! What sweet sibling moments! And her jumping for joy and you spinning so happily is so timeless! Y’all are so beautiful!!! - Your kitchen is so homey and cozy and perfect! I’m loving all the details! And Nanny’s cardinal and salt and pepper shakers! So many special memories and such continuity! - LOL about showing the vinegar mother. I can’t wait to see how that jar comes out compared to the others!!! - Haha about fractions! Me too! I’m math challenged! - Dang! I am so impressed with all of your goodies!!! You are so inspiring!!! This whole video is such a gift of beauty and inspiration and fun!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this and share it!!!!!!!
It was definitely one of those memories that I hope sticks with the kids when they are older and are making their own family traditions! Getting to rearrange the Knick knacks in the kitchen (one of the mostly child and dog proof spaces 😂) is a huge nerdy source of joy to me, I’m glad you enjoy the little details too! I will definitely be showing an apple cider vinegar update as it progresses, it’s seriously so fun to watch kitchen scraps turn into kitchen gold!
Hii friend love 👍👀
Hi there! Thank you for watching 😀
Hi good good morning, this kind of videos. You need to make it more like this. Thank you so much. God bless you ma'am and you and your family
That is such sweet encouragement! I appreciate it 🙂
Những trái táo tươi ngon quá ,ba mẹ con bạn thật dễ thương 🥰 😊.
Thank you! They were yummy fresh and definitely yummy after processed too!
I love Cottage Claire!!! I enjoy all of your videos, but these are my personal favorite. Your pumpkin bread turned out so cute and you look just so beautiful in your element. Happy Fall!! 🍁🎃🍂
Awww thank you for watching and for the sweet words! Happy fall to you too, I know this is one of your favorite times of the year also! I can so see you making pumpkin bread, your hungry boys would love it!
How Mary Engelbreit Home Companion magazine cozy fall worthy is this apple picking jaunt of yours!!!!!! I love that y’all have so many opportunities to glean and harvest such abundance! I’m also so impressed with how you can and store it all up!!!
I definitely felt very storybook that day! It was a perfect autumn adventure and a week later I have finally canned everything!
Hi hai mẹ xinh đẹp như thiên thần 🥰.
That is the sweetest compliment, thank you!
I have been using pee in my garden for over 30 years now! It works.
That is awesome! I’ve definitely had great success with it this year and will be using it again next year!
Your cottage look is so darling!!! I love everything about it, your hair, your red lipstick, your dress, and your apron full of flowers!!!!!! - You have such a homey, cozy cottage kitchen, too! Just surrounded by beauty! - What?!?!?! Your pumpkin bread IS perfection!!!!!! LoL about not being a dainty eater! I just thought you were enjoying it as one should! - I’m feeling so inspired by your happy cottage life!!! Thank you for sharing your gifts of artfully arranging flowers and fall decor and making Martha Stewart worthy bread! You ARE a treasure!!!!!!
Well that is just full of so many thoughtful compliments, thank you so much!! The rest of my house is utter chaos (and the kitchen is usually too after cooking 3 meals for 4 people almost daily 😂) so it’s nice to have a space that is cozy and has a few beautiful things in it! The bread actually turned out cute! I was so hopeful to make it, I’m so glad the recipe was easy to follow, if I can do it anyone can! ❤️
Awww, how fun and such a nice thing to make for early fall! I'm jealous of your pumpkin harvest--I had not one pumpkin so I ended up yanking my vines about 2 weeks ago. Next year! I will be planting them about the same time I did last year I guess. This year just wasn't normal in the garden. Happy baking! I like the garden tours but I know I also will like the cottage content as well.
This was a strange year in the garden for sure! I felt like everything took so long to get established! I’m planning on starting a few things earlier next year as well! I might be able to squeeze in a final garden tour but everything is mostly past its prime for the year, it’s sad to see it go!
Hi friend, beautiful flowers, I love your videos. Thank you so much. God bless you 👌🙏👍
Thank you so much! 😊
Nice recipe 🌝👍I definitely will try it. I've baked a pumpkin cake. I've made pumpkin lime jam and we had soup. So bread 🍞 is another possibility to use all those pumpkins that I've harvested. If the jam wouln't be finished already (it was sooo nice) I could try it together but as you've showed us butter is also delicious 😋 😉
That jelly sounds wonderful! I bet it would go fabulous with this bread 🍞 the recipe I used also had a pumpkin butter recipe but I didn’t have time to make it. I hope you enjoy all your pumpkins you’ve harvested, that’s awesome to have a good yield!
Looks delicious!
It was very delicious! The boys basically ate it over the course of a day and a half 😂
